Door protection.

Featured Replies

Even though the car's not here yet, I'm starting to get paranoid about the doors getting "dinked" or me "dinking" the door edges.

Just out of curiosity what do you use to protect the doors? Do Skoda do door protection/protectors?

Ta.

Park at the back of the car park, easy and free.

Except that someone will park squint about 6mm from your car.

I always park miles away from everyone else, at work, at the supermarket etc etc and yet someone always parks next to you!

Grrrr

Don't ever take your pride and joy on a Dover-Calais ferry then!

They cram you in so tight that door-to-door damage is ***guaranteed***.

I did the journey once and vowed to use Eurotunnel ever since (even though the ferries were much, much cheaper).

There's definitely a market for a solution to door dings. I don't mean find non-existent empty car parks, or park in the disabled bay or don't leave your home.

Some creative physical product that is easy to use, doesn't look ridiculous and protects the car. I did see what could be described as mooring buoys, but they did look ridiculous ;)

I know this is something out of James Bond or Star Trek but some sort of magnetic pulse that resists anything metallic that gets within 2mm of the bodywork.

The inventor would make billions overnight......in fact, dingmaster/dentmaster type companies would buy the technology off of him/her just to keep it off of the market.

Turn up early for the ferry, get the one before, but make sure you are the last car to get loaded - that's how my Octy made it back safe and in one piece.

As for the tunnel, make sure you keep your alloys clear of the kerbs in the train. Metal on metal is not a nice sound!

For most car models there are Moulds / trims, my Passat had them and you can get them for most Skoda cars. . Till now there are no OEM for the Octavia 3, if anybody does see them would be pleased to hear as well. Probably you could get them made by a body work specialist. I certainly want them before my next ferry journey as was mentioned above.

Strange thing is, every Octy III on UK soil has most likely been on the ferry from Emden, perhaps the Skud Dealers could supply us with the bits of protection that the factory stick all over for the maiden voyage!

Does anyone use the adhesive door bump guard or slide on ones to prevent the door edges getting damaged?

Maybe Skoda has to look at Ford.

see:

Great, as if ford drivers weren't bad enough now they're going to be going round denting everyone's cars!

Just found this thread.

I fit the clear door edging from Halfords. Its on a roll with double sided tape that goes on the inside of the door edge. Its cheap quite narrow and subtle, easy to replace when it gets dirty behind it. Use it on my Octi 2 and will use it on my mk3 Vrs when it arrives.

The edge protectors are to protect self inflicted accident .... answer is to be careful TBH.

But other numpty inflicted dings are the ones outside of our control, the ones The Plumber linked are the ones needed .... I don't suppose anyone has pics of them fitted to a race blue 03, I am undecided if it will suit (but worried about numpties in car parks) !

Please tell me this is not serious?

This will just encourage people to fling their doors open without worry in the belief they're now somehow immune to their own carelessness and stupidity… and dare I risk setting things off here - most notably in the case of women with kids in public and supermarket car parks!

The video stands to demonstrate nothing other than a sheer and lack of respect for other peoples property on behalf of anyone who utilises this 'feature' on their car.

In any case, this flawed system will at best prevent chipping and sharp crease marks, but not the shallow dents commensurate from the user happily booting their doors open into the centre (and weakest point) of the door of the poor ba*stard parked next to them.

I can think of much more effective systems… but can't imagine my ability to post freely on this site would continue should I dare publish them.

The hire car companies in Jersey have the right idea, which is to stick 1" square foam rubber strips about 6" long  to the doors - ugly but effective.

Afraid they are real and are fitted to the Ford Focus. I have seen them on an ST3

I noticed yesterday that my rear nearside door handle has a little red ding in it (my car is white) so someone must have banged the edge of their door into it. I doubt there is anything you can do to protect against others carelessness or disregard.

The only consolation is that some of their paint was on my door so it should have left a mark on their car as well.

Problem is they generally don't care!

A repelling electro-magnet operated by a proximity sensor… now there's an idea, and as most prams are aluminium it shouldn't go firing kids being wheeled past through shop windows, although no doubt completely non cost effective.

This very true, ive even had someone bang their door into mine when i was still sat in the car and look at me then walk away not caring. Needless to say i might have accidentally stooped to their level and opened my door quite firmly into the side of their car which would have definitley left a mark.

The only trouble i can see with electro magnet devices is they may affect your own cars complex electronic systems?

And you were still sat in the car ?

That's some restraint, I would have been straight out taking pics asking for insurance details and trying not to lose my rag :swear:

I totally agree...

It amazes me just how many people think it's 'normal' that this should 'happen' to their car or are happy to damage other peoples cars without a second thought, as has been evidenced by the shocked look on peoples faces when I've done exactly that and asked for their insurance details after they've just creased the door on my car.

Let's face it, if you were parked at the side of the road and someone came up and whacked the side of your car for no reason, leaving a dent of whatever size, you'd be calling the police… it's something you've worked hard to pay for and you have a right to own it without any mandatory or enforced expectance that someone else will damage it.

It's nothing other than criminal damage in my opinion, certainly if whoever has caused it thinks they have some right to just walk away without remedy.

They didn't hit my door that hard, the car was a shed and I hadnt manned up back then. Now it would be different and a quite agree with you. When a guy reversed into my new vrs after only a week and then shot off before I could stop him he got a proper talking to the next day. Luckily for him he didn't leave a mark!
