Yeti Accident M6

Morning All,

I was involved in accident on the M6 just after junction 4a yesterday in my Skoda Yeti.

I was travelling south bound towards the M1, a Red Honda Civic Type R with Black Wheels was appeared out of no where, drove through the motorway hatch (this car was going towards M42 and I was going towards M1), it didn't even slow down. At this time, I was already half way into the slow lane on the M6. I swerve to avoid it (hence I didn't see the registration, it was literally right in front of me - there is no way I could have seen it from the angle). I believe there must have been some contact with it. I spun, hit the barrier, side airbags came out.

Needless to day, that person did not stop, it continued down the motorway. I noticed 2 sets of tire marks. mine and the other car's, but what must also be the other car's swerving back into the hard shoulder (I have taken a photo). I have been to West Midlands Police to obtain a self reporting form, but since I don't have the registration number of the other car involved, I don't know how far the investigation would be taken.

I am appealing to anyone from this forum who saw / witnessed the accident. The last thing I remember was there was a Sliver Mondeo (Mk4) next to me, which have witnessed the incident. It was a busy motorway junction, so cards travelling towards M1 and M42 should also have seen the accident.

Appreciate your help.

Many Thanks.

I believe contact have been made, I can clearly see the other car's tire mark on the road, swerving back into the hard shoulder to avoid me. I basically spun round in front of him and he had to avoid me.

I understand it will be a claim, but my passenger and I could have been seriously hurt, that car did not stop. It just carried on.

It came through the motorway hatch - dangerous driving caused accident.

It was a Red Honda Civic Type R with Black Wheels - spaceship type. I seem to remember it being 08 reg.

Very sad to hear this and I hope you are O.K.

The police might have picked it up on the traffic cameras they have all over the motorway network these days, particularly the busy junctions.

Hope you get it sorted,

TP

That was what I was going to recommend - there are a lot of cameras on these junctions so fingers crossed it can be seen and identified. Glad to hear that you weren't hurt in the incident, best of luck with the insurance side of things.

Very sad for you, but relieved that you yourself aren't hurt.

Could you manage to give us a Google Street View location, or an OS gridref, and perhaps even a 'paths' sketch?  It might be possible to find out whether there is an overlooking camera (likely to be HA rather than police, and no guarantees nowadays that it would be working, let alone recording).

Thanks all. I have reported to the police today. I feel victimized. I feel particularly angry that the offender didn't even stop to

I am just thankful we are in the Yeti - it held up very very well, considering the last time I looked at the speedo, I was doing 65 70 mph. I will post some photoes after consulting with police/ insurance etc.

Here is where it happened.

I was entering the inside lane of M6 (half way through) when the Civic appeared to be sideways on my lane from M42 junction. It crossed those hatch / chevron things and ended up sideways (3/4s way) in front of me. I have had no time to hit the brake, only thing I could have and did was steered away.

There are some tire markings that are not mine, which must have been the Civic swerving back into the hardshoulder.

It seems very common on that stretch, whilst I was waiting for recovery and traffic officer, I saw a old brown Transit doing exactly that, going through the Chevron at the last minute to rejoin the M6.

As others have advised, it may have been picked up by CCTV almost certainly run by Highway Agency or their consultants. If you can't get a direct contact number try going through the relevant highway authority, usually the county council area within which the incident occurred. At the switchboard/help desk I would ask for the team leader for the traffic management team; hopefully this will give you someone low enough down to be interested and high enough up to have the right contacts to be able to refer you on to a named individual with the necessary authority to access the CCTV footage. (Everything is so tied down with Data Protection Act it can be hard to get simple answers). It will help a lot that you can give a very precise time, location and description of both the incident and the other vehicle.

The control centre may not hold onto the tapes for very long so my other advice would be an immediate Freedom of Information request to the highway authority and the Highways Agency for any information or evidence held on their system, again giving as much detail as possible. Ultimately it may not get you anything useful but, as an ex-local government employee, I do know that FoI requests get treated seriously, have a strict timetable for a response (last time I was involved in one) and usually a team of people chasing them up as the deadline approaches.

You might even ask your MP to make a request to the HA on your behalf. Again from my local authority days requests from the MP tended to go to the front of the queue.

All more hassle for you I'm afraid but I guess as it was a damage only accident it will very quickly drop off the police radar so if you don't pursue it no one will.

The important thing is that you and your passenger as uninjured and its good to hear the Yeti did the most important thing of all - held together when it had to.

Nasty, I hope you get some kind of result. I would have thought any kind of contact would be visible, the front panels are hardly robust. Just makes you realise how useful a 'black box' video camera would be front and rear. I recently got a cheap one from amazon that had quite good reviews, must get round to actually trying it out in the front of the car.

Good that passive safety aids worked-bad that active ones not up to scratch on the "s" exactly what esp is for! Happy it is only an accident repair. Know of one case where a pre-esp car went over an embankment in exactly similar circumstances. HA cameras abound-get on to them without delay so hopefully the scrote in the civic can be called to account-it should be on his insurance record not yours!

Although the 4x4 S spec 110 TDI does have (or did have) ESP

Glad you and your passenger are OK My_Yeti. I do hope justice prevails and you do find this driver.

I've had a couple of close calls myself with boy-racer and white van-man types while driving our Yeti. I think after reading this, I will also be buying a dashboard camera once Xmas is out of the way.

Sorry to hear of your accident My_Yeti. Just glad nobody was hurt. Hope you find the driver of the civic. Like you my wife was involved in a terrible accident in our previous 2wd 110 se. She was approaching a blind corner when another driver came around the bend on the wrong side. Due to the high bank my wife had no where to go but head on into the audi 80.both cars written off we were just lucky neither driver or my then few month old daughter were hurt. Just whiplash. My wife however has lost alot of confidence when driving and has had 2 near misses since on narrow country roads due to reckless drivers passing when they shouldnt be. One thing we learnt was how well made and safe the yeti was .good luck

Thanks all. I have just been to to the A&E following 111's advice. Good news is that my brother and I may have only stretched our neck muscle slightly and should be OK very soon. I have emailed photo of the tyre mark left by the other car and have submitted FOI for HA. Have recieved reply from the Police and HA very quickly - let's see what happens.

I will be engaging my MP as one of the poster above advised to see anything we could do. Thanks all for the support. Angus

One of the first thing I thought is if I had a car cam that would have saved all the hassle and would be getting one / recommending one to others.

Glad that no one was seriously hurt.

As regards on board cameras I have one rear and one forward facing. Both were bought from Maplins and have a 2.5 hour loop timing facility. The forward facing one is HD and cost £69. The rear facing one is VGA and cost £39.

Hope this info helps, even if it is after the event.

Another sad tale relating to the growing menace of idiots on the road. I have already requested a dash camera from the wife for Christmas, it seems they are becoming a necessity for day to day driving these days, best of luck with your efforts in tracking him/her down
