Winters on !

Featured Replies

I really liked the way Gabbo's grey VRS looked on the Dezent TD Graphite wheels, so I ordered some. Thanks for all your help & advice Gabbo, as undersized aftermarket ugly winter wheels go, I think they look the business.

I went with a slightly different offset to Gabbo, 17" 7J ET45 5x112) with Nokian 205 50 R17. I even got some snazzy blue centre caps that match the car colour, unexpected retentive bonus! I've had the car a week, winter tires have been fitted 3 days. So far, I can report a distinct lack of traction from a standing start, but that might be more to do with my childish induction to 220bhp.  :p

Fitted them Saturday night, tuesday morning in Prague was black ice and icicles on the cars, so just in the nick of time.

4 tires fitted & balanced on 4 rims, delivered was 24,000Kc, which is about 700GBP. I'm pleased

Fitted mine at the weekend, they are 16" Borbet CC Silver. Tyres are Goodyear Ultragrip 9, 205/55 R16.

I think they look pretty decent, although with 16" wheels the tyres look a lot more chunky!

Nice..! They look great also with the Race Blue..

I've had mine fitted for 3 weeks now & am very pleased with the Conti tyres also.

No snow or ice hear yet (only temperatures around 0°C) but I'm pleased with the road noise which is only marginally louder & the decrease in fuel consumption is not as bad as I expected.

Is the blue not just the protective plastic for the plastic centre caps?

Also do the Dezent centre caps now have the logo machined? Mine appear to be just a cheap sticker affixed to a silver plastic cap

I think it is actually the protective plastic as mine had the same thing but it is well fitted as I almost sent them back because they were the wrong colour!!

There is a picture of my centre caps below.

They are made of a thin sheet of plastic which looks shrink fit over the base plastic cap.

The logo is recessed into the cap to give a 3D finish.

Not quite as good quality as the Skoda ones but definitely better than a stick on logo:

Warning! I've just put my winter wheels on my VRS and had a very close shave. My wheel are BBS Himalaya SR sized 17x7.5 ET45 and the balancing weights (admittedly big ones) only just clear the front brake calipers - in fact they snagged for about the first 100m then were OK but it's striped some coating off both the calipers and weights. A bit too close for comfort but otherwise very happy with the wheels - I'll post pics later.

I got some mega cheap tyres and alloys for winter. Total cost- £0

I just leave the same tyres on :D

Anybody got 205/55R16 fitted and would like to share a picture? Cant stop thinking 16 look to small for Octavia..

Just put mine on, good timing as the hail and sleet started just as I was checking the pressures!

Photo to come - 16" x 6J ET48 Steels with 205/55R16 TS850's and Skoda Nordic wheel trims

As promised, and before it get mentioned, yes it is Asda again :)

16s suit the Octy nicely. Who needs 18s? :D

I don't

Only come a cropper once, and that was just my stupidity. Deciding to head off the beaten track to see what the snow was really like. Then tried to do a U turn at the bottom of a hill! Stuck, skidding everywhere. Oops!

Never needed them in normal day to day driving. Neither has my dad in 40yrs of driving, and im pretty sure he hasn't missed work because of the weather. Certainly not in the last 20yrs he hasn't.

If he lived round here he would have missed quite a few.

We have things called hills and also something called cold weather, ice and snow, neither of which exist in Kent.

Andy, they have a mountain in kent

Stop trying to make a mountain out of a molehill...

Cant decide whether to point out where we used to live................................ Oh go on then. Think of a red rose and the letter 'L'. :D

Of course, there was also the time my parents lived in Scotland.

We live on top of a hill here as well!

Not at all. When driving to and from home, the last few days there has been a temperature difference of 1 degree between top and bottom of the hill.

251 metres is nothing LOL - it is 380m at the top of my nearest hill (notice it isn't a 'mountain'), down to about 150m in the valley bottom

And lots of Lancashire is flat :)

3 winters ago 4x4s on summer tyres couldn't get up the hill, it was no problem with winter tyres on with 2wd. It seems gritting roads is not the highest priority round here .....

Yep, I understand 380m isn't a mountain. Beattock is higher!!

Noooo, Lancashire is full of hills, everywhere you look. Just look at my dads commute when we were there. Hest Bank to Heysham

You'll be lucky if you see a gritter up that road this year.

I know :)

Here's my effort - metal grey VRS with 17x7.5 ET45 BBS Himalaya in anthracite, with 225/45R17 Ultragrip 8. As noted above, all worked well but the clearance between the balancing weights and front brake calipers is critical. The road noise and ride seems to have improved a bit over my stock 18" wheels with Conti Sportcontact2.

The ground was a bit uneven which explains why it looks like the car is sitting very high.

If 16" wheels were able to fit on vrs models, I wonder how many vrs owners would use that size :P
