Oil leak from intercooler?

Featured Replies

I was under the car today and noticed a small oily patch on the undertray. I traced it back to the lower hose of the intercooler. Mentioned it to my bro (a Landrover mechanic) and his opinion was that a little oil from the turbo finding its way down into the intercooler was pretty normal.

As this isn't an ageing Landrover, other opinions welcome! Worth investigating / remedying?

You have a boost leak on the joint. Maybe worth checking thetturbo out ? If your car dosnt use alot of oil on the dipstick I wouldn't worry to much. Mind you. My pipe are alil oily but never makes a mess of the under tray

Ah, that might explain the slight sluggishness. I was assuming a dirty ERG or MAF sensor were the culprits.
I'll repair it pronto.

Checking out the turbo - any recommended checks? Car doesn't smoke on acceleration and I've not noticed any change in turbo whine. Does produce a little puff of smoke on startup though, which I don't remember it doing a few months back.

The oil will be from the crank case vent.

It's quite normal.

Yes crank case oil vapour, suppose the oil needs to go somewhere. My under tray even has a cut out so the oil doesn't collect in it which I find a bit weird. It's almost like it should come out there?

Its a common thing as mentioned.

To get rid of it for now you can clean the intercooler out, which is advisable if you still have your egr pipe. As the oil from the crankcase mixes with any carbon deposits that get put back through the engine and you can get a nice thick clay like substance in botton of it. (There is a guide on the fabia-vrs site, which i think is only accesible from a link on here now.)

Long term cure is oil catch tank or i think its the elephant mod which is mentioned a few times on here.
