Bit of a xenophobic statement isn't it?

  • Not completely sold on the nose regs for this year either, but some interesting designs came out however can't say Im sold on the ones that are just blatantly appendages (eg TorroRosso or ForceIndia).

What a mental race! On the edge of my seat the whole time fantastic. Hamilton from pit lane to 3rd, Alonso done a great job and I think my driver of the day has to be Ricciardo, just massively impre

Bit of a xenophobic statement isn't it?

It was partly a "tongue in cheek" statement, but it was interesting that the first person he was compared to in relation to the incident was Schumacher. The "win at any cost" mentality shown by Schumacher has also shown up in Vettel at times.

Also, I think if you watch the footage carefully, he was sawing at the wheel before the right front locked up.

Seeing as he was cleared by the race officials, it's all irrelevant now anyway. But it possibly marks a definitive moment in this years F1 title race and how both drivers react from now on will be minutely watched and analysed.

He may have felt something which isn't shown until it's in complete lock up.

As well as the footage, the FIA will have had access to all of the ecu sensor/settings data which we as viewers don't.

Indeed they do have access to all the data, but they don't have access to what was going through the drivers mind!

According to reports, a number of other drivers felt it was a deliberate act: "At least four drivers from leading teams said in private that they felt it was obvious from the behaviour of the car, and Rosberg's hand movements on the steering wheel, that he had done it deliberately. Two ex-F1 drivers agreed."

And if there is one circuit where pole position is more important than almost anything else, it's Monaco. I think Nico felt that this was a "must win" race and he did whatever he could do to ensure it happened. Some of the commentary on BBC was of the nature "if Nico doesn't win here, then he won't win the title", Nico probably agreed.

Again nico hasn't been that type of guy, and I struggle to think he would be so underhand. He to me is one of the few gentlemen left in F1 who don't indulge in games and being nasty things get their way.

Rubens (I know he's retired now) and jenson are 2 others I think have a similar fair play mindset. There are very few others like them.

I'd stick Lewis, vettel, Alonso, Kimi in the other camp as they're all similar minded.

I'm minded to agree with your views on Nico as a driver, but, it has to be said this is the first season he has genuinely been in contention for the drivers championship and with what could be a one and only opportunity, I think, like most drivers in the same situation, Nico is doing a lot of "calculating" in his mind.

The same applies to Lewis and there are reports of him using an engine mode in Spain that they are not allowed to use, in order to stay ahead of Nico. Apparently Nico used the same mode in Bahrain when trying to get past (not quite sure why they're not allowed to use it and let's be honest, when in the heat of a race, duelling for the lead, which driver wouldn't press the "go faster" button, irrespective of what the team said?)

My first thought on seeing Nico disappear down the run off road was "how convenient" and with everything I've seen and read afterwards I'm still of the same view.

Braking 3 car lengths later than normal I read somewhere, wiggling the wheel around before braking all seems a bit too odd for drivers that are skilled enough to brake to the mm. A bit too suspicious to me tbh but we'll never know. As far as making out he is a saint and the rest are out to stitch everyone up I dont buy that either, they'll all do whatever they can get away with to win. The higher engine mode will be to protect the engine I guess, dont forget these are all new motors, they will be wanting to limit stress on them as much as possible, when a team have as much of a lead as merc do then they'll rather run at 95% and save a little to help with reliability.

It's going to be a good season, all about the inter-team battles I think.

Well, IMO Mercedes and Vermillian Red Bovine have on thing in common this year; a narcissistic whining noise from behind the steering wheel of one of their cars. ;)

On a happier subject, congratulations to Marussia on their first points ever.

At least Vettel's is quite justified, and he did manage to temper himself somewhat in Monaco before launching into a diatribe.

While I agree the Renault power unit definitely appears to be a right bag of spanners. It has been funny watching red bull state over and over that its not Sebs fault that he is slower than Ricardo. Lets face it, its still probably the best chassis in F1 and Sebs too slow on the brakes/in the corners. That's his fault not the power unit. Unless red bull are trying to imply Recardo's car has magic extra hourse power

German engineering eh?

What a great action packed race!

Congratulations to Ricciardo for his first win and good on Vettel for not sulking when his teammate won.

Yes indeed. 20 or so laps to go and I'm almost shouting at Perez (in reality the TV!) to get a wiggle on and put Rosberg under pressure. Action at the start, tension in the middle, and tension and action at the end. Will probably be a long time before we get another race like that.

Massa certainly shook things up!

The last minute crash was a real shame. I'd have loved to have seen Massa take a few places.

Still an excellent race after an unremarkable start though, and Rosberg did a cracking job to hold on to second.

Fantastic second half to the race! It says a lot that even with a failure the Mercedes were still competitive (although not winning material)! Also I was really having a yell at both Force Indias to get out of the way! I felt if they had not been there then we would have seen much more action! But cannot take it away from them, they used a tactic that played to their strengths! Big shame about Massa and Perez at the end. Glad they are both okay!

Big regret - Filipe hitting Checka and not the pointy German one.

Gutted for Massa - really wanted him to do well and the Williams seems to be doing really well this season.

Yup so gutted for massa. Williams do seem to be coming back up the grid.

As above rosberg did well to keep 2nd without kers (or whatever they call it now).

I think for now Mercedes are going to be tough to overtake in the championship.

On reflection the stewards also felt gutted for Massa as they've penalised Perez for changing "his racing line which caused the impact with car 19 in Turn 1".

IMO that is harsh because this footage appears to show that Massa jinked right as Perez jinked left (to go round Vettel), as per video:

I thought it was a racing incident in all honesty. If either of them swerved, it's very small amounts for the speed they were doing!

I don't think Chilton deserved a penalty, either!

Is it wrong that a part of me wanted Massa to collect Vettel on the way past?

Perez's penalty was a bit harsh but Chiltern 100% deserved his, just for moaning like a bitch afterwards that it wasnt in anyway his fault! Jules closed the door on him apparently, the rest of us saw him lose the back end before any contact lol

Plus, Williams have by far the best paint scheme of the year (worth half a second a lap in my opinion).

No, it's perfectly normal  :giggle:

Bit of shame that Hamilton has suffered the only two Mercedes DNF's though. He looked like he had the measure of Rosberg.
