Hacking my inbox now then George - cheers pal, what skills you have!

A great looking pair.

As to my computer skills, only when i cheat, & i have not many skills on a PC..

But i do have enough to see what Defeat Devices VW can have on a ECU or what little tricks can be unlocked..

(looking forward to getting a Golf R Estate out and see what can be done with the DSG & the Launch Control

\\\\\\\getting wired in sort of thing..)

Interesting :http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/vw-golf-r-vs-audi-rs4-comparison

Had great fun driving my Partner's B in L's R estate in the Derbyshire countryside, great fun but not up to the mark of the manual hatch imo.

However, not far off but fantastic useable space. DSG pretty good as well.

What was it about the estate that wasn't so good Keith?

A twenty miles return journey adventure (for me) on some Derbyshire A,B & C roads round Ashbourne area. Some cracking road my missus's B in L had selected ,comprising of endless twists and turns with gradients ,some good straight section ,for launch control bursts.

So mixed the run up into quarters for there and back of Hatch and Estate driving . Very enjoyable day was capped with a pint of local ale at a good pub.

So to be honest Tom, the conclusion of both of us was that the Hatch was just sharper and that much more precise. Probably due to the Estate overhang and harder suspension set up .Trip was mainly done it Race mode with the last quarter in Normal set up.

Continentals on mine and Bridgestones on the Estate.

In fairness not a massive amount in it overall.

Both agreed , the run was a better experience with the manual box, but I did enjoy the DSG experience again, especial the Launch Control element.

That being said the added space in the boot for his golf clubs was useful and for his business needs are an obvious bonus.

Stephen raves about it, compared to his MB E Class estate, however it was a top of the range 2.2 diesel.

Must admit I may be tempted when touring Euro etc. and space required for missus's dog.

Both great fun packages but would love a manual box option in the Estate.

the MB 2.2 diesel isn't their smoothest engine :( I looked at the 2.2. in 250 guise on my last car and really didn't like it at all. The 350 diesel is the sweet spot in the E class, but if you don't need the space the E class is a real Euro-barge compared to something form the small family Estate class. I can see why he would prefer the Golf, except  for perhaps a bit of load space and a nice interior, the MB isn't a great drivers car (super good on motorways though).

Nice review Keith - some interesting points there.

Also interested in what route you took :)

Yes ^^^ some fantastic roads in Derbyshire :)

Those Bridgestones would explain some of the poorer handling as it is well noted that they are carp on the MK7 Golf............

You recon the estate has a harder set up than the hatch?. Looks like they have fubar'd it again, like the 2.0lt diesel engine version of my car is crashy over bumps etc.....mines smooth............

I would not be surprised if they used the front R hatch springs/dampers & the rear GT/GTD estate dampers & just made a set of rear springs for the R estate.............so not perfectly matched...........mines lovely around fast/tricky corners & I have a bad back!......

Also you, like me & various other car reviewers would prefer a manual option in the estate.................bloody VW

Just look at the Part No. for the 2015 Golf R Estate Rear Springs, (& the front.)

and then see what Spring Rate they are.

See what the same springs are used on with other Volkswagen Group Vehicles.

What is the difference in weight of a Mk7 Golf 1.4TSI 140ps front wheel drive Estate

& a Mk7 Golf R estate,

then what Size Tyres are on the 1.4TSI compared to the Golf R Estate?

(What are the Revenue Weights of the different models?)

EDIT.

Golf GT 1.4 TSI 150ps DSG Estate 1,215 kg

Golf R 300ps 3 Door Manual 1,361 KG

Golf R 300ps DSG Estate 1,499kg

If anything like the correct weights, there is some difference there.

Forgot to say George,as can be seen in the photos, both cars were on 18" Cadiz Std alloys.

Wardy,

Will see if I can pull off the route from the Sat-nav or get my partner's B in L to mail me a copy.

Was impressed with the surface quality of the roads travelled on in Derbyshire.

Car now needs a bloody good clean.

Route home from Ashbourne to Devizes was because of the hold up on M6/M5 or the A38- M40 or M42/M5 was off Motorway via Fosseway. No hold Ups to speak of,undertaken in Eco mode approx 150 miles, (chilled) returned 38 mpg @ ave speed of 35mph . Pretty happy with that.

It was the comparison fabravdav was making on Ride Comfort or Handling i meant, and not just the suspension.

the difference of a Golf GT Estate & Golf R Estate.

His much lighter estate is on 225/45 R 17's on 7J x17 rims.

I was saying they probably used the same rear dampers as GT/GTD estate..................& make up a new set of springs for the R..............

Springs primarily give ride height......& are dependent on car weight...............there is no other Golf estate which is lowered & has 4wd.........

........the dampers however are more "universal" fitment ...........

.......the front dampers/springs will be off a hatch "R" as this is the same as estate for weight etc.

You are mis reading my post................

I was stating that my car -vs- the diesel engine version is smoother & handles better..............the diesel engine version is "crashy" ...................loads of other people state the same in road reviews............

With regards to the R estate I was implying that they had fubar'd it as he states the suspension is "hard"...................

This is why I was talking about the springs & dampers & what VAG usually do to save costs...............eg use existing components............................

BUT they would have to make a set of rear springs for the R estate......& maybe these are made "hard" because they have used the rear dampers from the R hatch which are not optimally tuned for the estate so produce more "roll" so they make the new rear springs stiffer to compensate .................

Or an Audi A4 quattro Avant.

Review and Road Test for those interested :http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/volkswagen/golf/91187/volkswagen-golf-r-estate-2015-review

Cracking package imo.(But then I'm biased!)

Cheapest used and barely used demo {approx. 1000 miles currently-available mid Nov.) but at fairly low spec if you are interested :http://usedcars.volkswagen.co.uk/Golf-Estate/2.0-TSI-R-300ps-DSG-Estate/Leamington-Spa/4419949-605314089-17816.aspx?srcmdc=se_na_re_

Are they not advertising for sale their Demonstrators in the usual way, and then still not able to sell you them

for a while,

the only difference now being VW are telling them they must keep them longer than before.

Cameron VW Perth have one advertised at a ridiculous asking price, White Golf R Estate £32,995 / 1,500 miles.

not sure if that would be the one that i spotted in that area really hooning it about with a BMW tailing it, possibly 2 officers of the law trying it out. (just a guess there.)

It looks good at twice the NSL even though it was a bit wet and foggy & only had DRLs on to the front.

Camerons have a white demo, reasonable spec (price?) on the VW used web and a brand new ,in red very high spec on Autotrader but prepared to give 7% off advertised price, so approx. £35k

Makes the Black 3,000 mile available in 45 days time look a bargain.  (linked in post #2767)

Quite possibly some money off that 'asking price' when going in with no trade in.

Re Golf R MPG & the DSG.

Just read Top Gear Magazine latest, issue '276',  page 150,

VW Golf R / 'Coast to Coast'.

MPG figures in the article in ECO were pretty good,

i never knew about the DSG Clutches decoupling when cruising so you can coast 'for free'.

(must try cruising to the coast and see how the decoupling goes!)

In the Golf R Estate it will be even better for going cruising and dogging.

Or even Dog Walking.

Thanks George, very informative, especially the last paragraph.

The 605 litres is so practical and indeed useful.

The cheapest R Estate would appear to have been withdrawn from sale /sold. So that is 50% of the used/ new advertised over last few weeks

2 demos in White remain.

Any member on here buying the met black car from Listers Stratford?
