  • For 23k I'd be in a Cayman.  Not a bleeding Polo.

  • Wow! A bit of a fly on the wall comment in jest has been turned into me supposedly taking the credit for the size of the thread!?! Err...ok...   Just to clarify, I have far more important things to

  • Apologies is this thread is going a bit "off topic", but I'll carry on anyway as there is Golf R content... This is my personal experience of the S3, Golf R and M135i and the respective test drives.

TBH unless there is a 5, 6 or more cylinders, making it noisier makes it awful, as there is nothing nice sounding about any four pot to me (IMO).

Pops and crackles is OK but becomes annoying too.

Even a tripple sounds nicer than a four.

At least those in the car get a synthetic noise and not the (wet) farty sounds.

It is good that a Golf R Estate has a more pleasing sound coming out the exhausts.

i have to agree with that actually yeah, well, with cars anyway.

Triples do whistle and growl abit.

Ah. I didnt realise they had the synthesiser thing in. I have been in an R and i didnt think it sounded that bad, this must be why.

i know its a 300bhp car.. but it is only a 2.0 litre too isnt it. i guess that isnt doing the sound any favours either

It is the modern way. Passenger Comfort.

Make the cabins insulated from noise, double even triple glaze, special seals, mirrors streamlined and useless to look behind with.

Fit environmental friendly tyres that make less noise and grip the road poorly in some seasons or weather condition.

Then for the Halo Models, fit lower profile and wider tyres, try to tune the exhaust on sporty models to make parpy noises, and put some false noises into the car so you know you have the sporty version. (more expensive one.)

Even use a bit more fuel to make the car sound as though it is faster even though its just overrun it works on.

Think you'll find that the M135i /M235i has some synthesised sound internal as well.

I'm happy with less farts and crackles, even silence,as long a it P's over the competition.

i knew the M135i did, just didnt realise the R did tbh.

it must work well, as i didnt notice when i was in one.

So when you put it into R mode.. is it just the speakers that make it sound better, or is there a valve in the exhaust like their is with the TTRS and such?

There is a valve that opens to allow all four outlets to breath and the sound generator which is bolted to the bulkhead sends vibrations through the windscreen area to give a more aggressive sound.

In the settings for individual mode you can adjust the soundaktor for how noisey it is in the cabin :)

The thing with the 135i/235i etc is they have a proper engine that is a dream of a sound but then I can spend ages listening to engines (sad) big V's like merlin etc are just to die for.

quite some engineering there then aha. nice one :)

Funny vid showing the R driver getting abit of a shock lol:

"Goodbye....." Excellent :D I love the Fiat Coupe. I used to work with a chap who had a 20V he was restoring, it made a fab noise(possibly not quite as good as the Audi 5 cylinder though)  and went like stink in it's day :)

The 'fake' sound  in the M135 doesn't cut in until you really stand on the expensive pedal on the right, although if you fit the MPE then you don't really hear it at all until you are in flat out mode. I love a straight six, even better than a V6. Having said that,  a Jag F type does sound better than the current M3

Here is an interesting 4 cylinder noise Ok the first bit sounds like a demented tractor while it's on the rolling road, but the acceleration runs sound quite fruity :)

here's the link for people who prefer curious sets of letters in their links

ps they are the same video

Achieved by exhaust valves, which Yahama were using a goodly few years ago but now they achieve simillar noise using a cross plane crank shaft so the inline 4 sounds more like a V4 but without actuallly adopting the V4 config.

If only the R used a crossplane crank, but i cant see that happening, can you?

I can vouch for the V4 sound. Ive got one. Its alreet. More interesting that a conventional IL4 anyway. It growls, and doesnt need to be revved like an il4

May be get back on thread topic:

M135i - 1min 26.6,AudiS3 - 1.27.7,Audi RS3 - 1,26.6 and Golf R mk7 - 1min 26.1 sec.

All beaten with a "crap" engine noise but by a reasonable margin.!

Countryroads would see an even more pronounced difference imo - but then, as you know, I'm extremely biased!!

You are quite extremely biased, yeah :D

It was on topic. We were talking about the R's crap sound (:

I guess itd be an expensive job for vw. Seems as the R's engine is a GTI's engine with a few more bits bolted on, isnt it? So making any big changes would mean going back to engine design

Removal of Soundaktor with Before and After :

Is that todays job sorted for you then?

I'm happy with mine, in all engine mode settings.

However, always willing to assist others who may want an alternative .

For those that undertake the mod ,I hope it satisfies your ear requirement - if not run a sound track of your chosen mark (motorcycle, car or truck.....), through the Media player!!lol

Ahaa. Listen to a Crossplane R1 on Youtube.

Although most videos have the front wheel pointing to the sky

Keith, why do you think the margin on real roads would be bigger? I'd think the opposite were true, given that all three can massively exceed the limit point on anything other than a big wide open stretch of road.....

Good to see you back on site Steve, hope life is good for you,

Think this article in TOP Gear puts it in a better way about Hot Hatches on UK roads :http://www.topgear.com/car-news/hot-hatch/hot-hatch-shootout-10-contenders-become-six-track-battle

My needs changed. Spend half my life on motorways, and a larger comfy diesel sofa is what I need.
