New Golf R

Featured Replies

Just read, cannot disagree the R is just plain great at everything where some of the others excel in some areas but this can then make the R a bit boring but IMO it is an awesome all-round total package!

it is just that.

if it was louder, shoutier and not as smooth.. itd be called down in other areas than 'boring'

you cant get everything.

its all about personal taste. i like the R, its great.. but it is abit quiet for me. To me things feel more exciting if they shout, bark and bite when you plant it.

but im still young..

  • Apologies is this thread is going a bit "off topic", but I'll carry on anyway as there is Golf R content... This is my personal experience of the S3, Golf R and M135i and the respective test drives.

If it had a six pot under the bonnet or a V6/5 it would be heaven for me :)

Even though we know that Chris Harris is BMW 6 pot man, it is interesting to hear his views on the comparative motors in these applications.

Just taken my mates new golf R for a spin down some country roads, what a fantastic quick car...but sadly to look at it bores the hell out of me :(

That is why there are different models of vehicles and a choice of styles, otherwise ever manufacturer could just make their cars look the same year after year & model after model like, VW, Audi, & Porsche designers do.

Thankfully when driving great cars its not really necessary to be looking at your self in shop windows.

^^^^I drive past shop windows and I'm in a great R!

glad I am not the only who looks at the car's reflection (especially when clean) ... but have to say my old octy looked better that the Audi - all subjective

Tom, did you read the whole article of the long term,I mentioned at the time that imo it was pretty crap, and so did other in the review/comments section

It's a shame that you never got to have a test drive in the Golf R and get the real hands on comparison Tom.

May be sometime you can compare it with Cooper S JCW. That would be interesting around local country roads.

Not sure if I've read that or not, probably have if you've linked it before :-)

Yeah shame I didn't get to drive one, I will make some time to do so soon. Fabia will be replaced at some point towards the end of 2016 and the R will be on a list of potential successors no doubt lol ;-) Although I might just be tempted with another M135i haha, or even M140i if it's released by then.

Funny vid showing the R driver getting abit of a shock lol:

Haa brill.

4wd got him off the line didnt it. Then that was it lol.

He was also wearing classic Golf R attire ;-)

^^^^ How many Golf R owners have you seen wearing that??? ;)

You may catch me wandering around a field looking for gold with my "Tilley" hat but never a baseball cap.

How horrendous does that blue Audi look. Completely ruined :D

I'm also puzzled why the Audi wasn't bothering to accelerate hard ;-)

Must of just been warming the engine up gently for the next run ;):D

Following an R earlier. They seem to be loads around here.

It wasn't slow i must say.. overtakes seemed fairly brisk.

Couldn't help myself but to open up past it though. Didn't want him going home and telling his mates its quicker than a bike, did i :D

Nice motor though. Do they do a performance exhaust for them? to make em abit.. uhh.. louder?

There are aftermarket jobbies of various flavours, from Miltek, Armytrix and powervalve to name a few, nothing from VW (that I know of) to keep it within warranty.
