New Golf R

I would never be in S going flat out, and as it happens if you are on full throttle in some cars the '6th in S '  will change up to

7th at around 127 mph. Not all do.

In 'D' 7th you can go flat out for Max Speed, and still kick down if the RPM is suitable, ie the engine is not under load.

  • Apologies is this thread is going a bit "off topic", but I'll carry on anyway as there is Golf R content... This is my personal experience of the S3, Golf R and M135i and the respective test drives.

If I'm in a jail cell you might not get a report back as I'm not sure they allow the use of iPads or have free wifi there lol

I'm not sure. They seem to have everything else haha.

Ah cheers george!

127 though? What is flat out? What have you had?

Thought itd be more than that. My 1.2 will do 100 and thats 110bhp less? Aha

140 plus.   GPS,

& someone with an Estate has the Vid or pics of GPS in Europe with a full car & 144 mph i think.

But then you get nice petrol there.

Thats more like it. Good stuff (:

The new biturbo passat is 500nm, and comes with a DSG box and 4motion. If the current DSG box is limited to 500nm then remapping the R/S3 would shred it. Clearly it doesn't, or hasn't yet for those early adopters.

Now 3 months and 3000 miles of ownership.

Not a better hatch about for cross country, all weather quick but safe driving, in my opinion. Car's handling, Balance, control and general traction is brilliant and much fun.

Majority of the 3000 miles is done so far on a mix of country roads, A,B and C .with some m4 and m5 . Very similar to my previous Octavia vRS MK3.(TSI)

R running in mainly Normal mode, as was the Octy, R returning 35 mpg with the Octy doing 37 mpg.

Longer motorway trip recently R returned 37.5 mpg ,average from the Octy, having covered 11500 before sold,  was 39.0 mpg.

Not much difference in mpg but by heck what a difference in driving experience!

Yes it cost a lot more cash but worth every penny and looking at the mk6 on residual for a guide, then it  will be  reducing my depreciation losses as well.

Think it may be a keeper, well until the mk8 arrives in 400 bhp form.

So yesterday a reasonable mixed run up to London to see the Arsenal with two of by lads.

Good frosty but dry run at just over 230 miles with approx. 80% M4 with balance local A,B and C Wiltshire local roads.

Just over 4 months ownership, with 4200 miles on the clock, gave it a bit more of a brisk run, so average speed 57 mph with fuel consumption of ave 34.9 mpg, running Tesco Momentum.

Back roads last night, at 12.00am ,were very slippy frosty /icy surfaces but car very assured handling and not one drama.

So another Happy Driving Day was had by all.

Oh! The Gunners won as well!

Ha I see you support a good team too :)

Saw a lovely Lapiz Blue Golf R out and about on the roads earlier. Looked almost purple with the lighting conditions as they were.

But was it me?

But was it me?

Not unless you are in Cornwall this afternoon Keith?!

I'm also sure the driver was a lady with a large mop of grey hair lol

I'd heard that you where looking for a mature woman with R to share,so thought, give it a go.

These dating sites can generate some good matches!

Just pop a paperbag over her head and lie back and think of the R lol!

You've just reminded me that I haven't yet got my copy of CAR through the post! It's also interesting to note that the Seat is much closer to the Golf PP+ (same engine torque, same front LSD, similar OTR pricing spec for spec). I'm beginning to wonder what VAG will stuff into the Cupra R, possibly in between the Golf R/S3 and the upcoming Golf 400 and the RS3 perhaps. Meanwhile, I note that the R has 280lb/ft or 379Nm, and the DQ250 box has a limit of 350Nm apparently. Suggests to me that VW must be retuning the DSG TCU in order to handle the R's output

Interesting piece by Dickie Meaden in EVO this month. Rise (again) of the hot hatch wars, never been a better time be 40+ no kids, small mortgage and disposable income. Wouldn't be surprising to see a hybrid making 500hp AWD with 5 doors within the next 10 years.

Kids don't hold you back if you are fortunate and plan ahead.

They certainly don't stop me...

Although having said that, if I was in my 40s with no kids and decent disposable income I probably wouldn't be getting excited about sensible 5 seat hatchbacks with extra pace.

Mid engined. Hmmm.... Boxer GTS?

That would be a second car. I'm always going to need 4 doors and a boot for work and domestic duties.

I thought that.

Usually the hatch is only needed with a family isnt it.

But never the less. Hatches have never been so fast have they.

Says the 22 year old with a fabia, and no kids. (Phew)

I didn't have enough cash in my 30s to spend on a today's equivalent £35k car, so these Uber hatches aren't targeting hooligans in their 20s. I accept that they're not the last word in driver fun, but the fact it's a shopping trolley on a Tuesday, a rep mobile Monday to Friday and quick and focused enough to induce a grin on a Sunday morning.

Agree!

Hooligans with no licences target many cars with some go regardless of cost.

& there are hooligans or not under 30 year old that can easily buy used cars that are not that old.

As for new cars purchased / leased the Golf R. S3 etc,  there are areas where young people earn plenty of money and

a £35,000 plus car from Audi, VW, Mercedes etc is really not an issue.

Plenty self employed or PAYE younger members of the community with the taste and Net Income for interesting cars,

and even Q cars.

It's an interesting point actually, I suspect that if you ask a group of car enthusiasts to choose just one car based on desire, not practical or financial need, you end up with quite a broad spectrum. Personally a M5 Estate is all the car I'd ever want, over any Ferrari, lambo etc supercar. They are always the last reviews I read in a car mag!

Keith, are you about over Christmas at all? - Would love to meet up and have a gander at the R if possible?

I'm around Marlborough/Swindon up to the 5th if you would be so kind/ feel like showing off :)
