New Golf R

Featured Replies

Presumably they have accessed both in the VAG range and this is their choice. A similar comment to the one you make could be put forward for the Seat Cupra 280

That's true.

Interesting top 50 selection, but it seems a bit odd that the Golf R comes number one and the Audi S3 doesn't feature at all.

Not to mention a standard BMW 320d at 14, a Range Rover Sport at 6 and an i3 at 2... Which they say is a family car.

Try getting kids in the back.

They have also put the 1.0 Fiesta at 5 and missed out the ST which all motoring mags rave about.

Including themselves...

I guess it's same "odd things" that go on in all our minds as Briskoda members, when we select our motors.

If you read the introduction for the selection criterion, then it's the same dilemma we all go through .

Hence it will always be subjective.

I'm sure there are some very good wheels missing!

Do VW release cross country blast mpg figures? Can't say I've seen that data ;-) lol

When I went out ragging it in an S3 cross country I got low 20s mpg so suspect I would see the same behind the wheel of an R. I guess everyone's idea of a "blast" is different :-).

The golf is brilliant as it's easy to drive and safe in all weathers. I reckon it's an ideal go-kart point and shoot vehicle whereby you can just mash the throttle and steer. Worth remembering its FWD for the vast majority of the time.

Personally I like abit of a challenge / be pushed to get the best out of a car.... and enjoy that RWD feeling. Feeling the rear slip a little (and sometimes step out a tiny bit) before it grips and shoots you down the road is great fun. But then we are all different. Horses for courses and all that! It's nice to have so much choice in the hot-.hatch market these days :-)

Tom,

Guess there is a "Smooth Blast" and a "Ragged Blast", on a known or unknown  road , can make all the difference.lol.

Were you wearing Dr Martins or slippers in the S3?

Saw another two Golf R were stolen over the weekend.

I know they are good.

But is there a security issue or it's just down to their popularity as a discreet getaway car?

Always thought it was a steal at the price!!

Boss,

Have you got yours yet off the back of a lorry!

I doubt the owners are finding it quite so amusing.

Like I said, I know they are very popular.

But surely for the number out there, there shouldn't be so many being "borrowed".

It'll be interesting to see how it effects insurance after a while.

When I sold my MY10 GT-R for a more expensive MY11, my insurance came down.

Exactly because of the history of the earlier cars. (in this case, lots being parked through hedges in fields)

Agree, not very nice if it happens to you.

Hopefully they have the right insurance policy and they can get a brand new replacement.

My new insurance premium has just arrived no real increase noted yet though.

The S3 was bein driven smoothly down known roads (I tend never to push a car too hard I unfamiliar roads) but in the spirit of a testdrive lol. So definitely no slippers, giving the car a good workout.

Not sure how those were stolen, but the ones I have seen reported have been stolen with the keys.

Not sure how you get round that.

It's easy to say you would tackle them in your house, but is it worth it? they usually come armed in one form or another.

For the sake of a lump of metal, I think I wouldn't bother :(

I agree.

As someone with kids it's isn't a nice part of the ownership package.

Yup. Agreed.

Wouldnt even bother trying to fight em i wouldnt.

People approach it different ways. I know a lad with a very nice car that sleeps with the keys next to his bed and a baseball bat next to that, after a scare that he had.

And i know somebody with an R that leaves the keys near the front door in the hope that if they do break in, they'll have no need to taunt the family n kids, just take the car.

So Audis S3 MPG worst quoted figure are way off your "Blast" achievement Tom.

31mpg,48mpg and 41.0 mpg for urban, extra urban and combined respectively.

But as you indicated earlier,No Blast figure. Think we must get that changed .

I leave the keys in an obvious place too, but an hoping that the two tailpipes / driven wheels is led attractive and under the radar of the twocas

My mrs's Dads just got a 64 Plate, i cant believe how fast it is.. but at the same time how expensive it is, its just.. i dont know if id pay that much.. and like you say they get stolen so very often.. i had a mate in manchester that was a handy lad.. about 18 stone too.. if you saw him you would probably cross the road.. but he got an S3 specced it up totally got everything on it paid just over 43 grand, the dealer said they wouldnt lose much value if he did that.. 6 months in someone broke into his house took the keys.. left the laptops phones everything else.. just took the car.. they found it about 10 miles away no scratches on it.. but like someone said theyre "perfect" for bank jobs.. incredibly quick.. 4 door and very good round corners so easy to get away.. i dont know if id want the drama of that though really. lot of money for a car.. her dad always has 2 cars parked behind his so.. but still.. he actually said to me when id been to alton towers did i need to go to see if i could get in something fast seen as ive a VRS haha.. what a joker..

It's definitely the car of the moment. Won't be long tho before something new and exciting comes out and the road testers cast the Golf aside in favour of the new toy lol

Civic

Golf R400,succession plan 2016.

Tom,

I know you are working on the Missus's car succession plan but what is your short - medium vision?

Are you an M2 man also?

Or perhaps, temptation forbid, an R400............or

I'm liking the succession planning.... very interesting...

I have a succession plan for 2018, which hopefully will involve a Golf R estate if funds allow, or if not, then either a Ford Focus ST estate or Mk3 Octavia vRS estate. Audi A4 Avant is also a possibility.

Nice one, however your list will probably be longer by 2018

I was going to say succession plan is what ever tempts me at the time I am ready to buy a car, and changes every 5 minutes,

although saying that it will most likely a be quick estate next.
