  • For 23k I'd be in a Cayman.  Not a bleeding Polo.

  • Wow! A bit of a fly on the wall comment in jest has been turned into me supposedly taking the credit for the size of the thread!?! Err...ok...   Just to clarify, I have far more important things to

  • Apologies is this thread is going a bit "off topic", but I'll carry on anyway as there is Golf R content... This is my personal experience of the S3, Golf R and M135i and the respective test drives.

Does anyone know if any of the Motor Mags have a long term  R  in their fleet yet?.

That will be a 10,000 mile pluser.

Not seen one anyplace.

Do not ask what my Google keywords were when i found this.

How to turn a beautiful car into a chavmobile eeewwww :(

Luckily you just 'Peel off',   and Demonstration done,

or show it for a while, then remove.  Chav-fastic suits some.

Talking of chavtasm, I'm still waiting for the chaps in Mansfield to release their R / S3 / 280 remap. A couple of 280 owners have reported close on +100bhp using a REVO stage 1. Anything over 350 must be insane.

At what power does the LSD become less useful though? And it turns back into another fwd that goes in straight lines everywhere? Hsha

Never heard of SuperNova Tuning but those gains look good. Can be done via OBD port too?

Think I'll remain a boring "Old Fart" and keep mine standard, with 4 year warranty intact  but will look at what the R 400 has to offer in a year or so time.

I'm sure it will be great fun, for those that want a tweaked 296 mk7 for track days..

Hey. (:

So, can it be done via the OBD or do you have to open the unit? (:

Full communication by OBD. No soldering or opening of the control unit is required, Will soon also be released on our switchable unit however the vehicle must visit us first for the initial set up. Much the same as the rest of the 2.0 TFSI VAG engines as far as communication goes.

Well here's the thing. Take my octy vrs. Factory 200bhp thereabouts, post remap 240-250 bhp. More significantly torque from 200lb/ft ish to around 280lb/ft. OK, so the vrs isn't the last word in the handling dept, but that massive increase in torque didn't destroy it. The cupra is in an altogether different league, in fact it's cornering capability over the vrs is way more impressive than its additional 30bhp or so (over my remapped octy remember).

I suspect that it will cope easily with a stage 1 boost, as the LSD will be used in a cupra r and anything else fwd with silly power, as VAG tend to use common modular components across vehicles, not bespoke units. Go drive one, it's better than you might think. There is a vcds setting to the diff that is not a driver option in the 280, but is clearly provisioned for a more powerful engine.

That sounds good! I suspect many will be getting them mapped then?

I only say because i went in an 07 leon cupra which was running 300bhp, obviously no LSD and it was quite the tyre muncher. Was slightly damp and it was spinning up at 80mph mid corner with a slightly ham fisted driver (not myself hsha) at the wheel.

I wondered if the 280 would be like that when mapped, but if it copes well. Thatd be awesome.

Proper little weapon wouldnt ;) haha.

Bet that was abit scary, especially if on the public road!

It was on a public road, yeah. With walls each side haha.

I dno. Wasnt scared. Probably should of been. His skill level wasnt up to much haha.

300 bhp through uncontrolled FWD is a recipe for hurt for sure. Remember the Saab 9-3 Viggen?? "Only" 250bhp but so much torque completely bamboozled the chassis and the driver!

Well yeah. Pretty much haha.

It wouldn't be too bad if it was driven properly. Standing on the throttle mid corner isnt really a wise idea in a lot of cars is it haha.

Good for high speed overtakes tbf, in a straight line.

Not much good for traffic light GP as it just spins n spins lol.

I don't see why the Leon would be broken with a map. 260bhp & 400lb·ft in a crappy mk4 Ibiza is usable with a mechanical diff :) I know the power levels don't really compare but the torque sort of does

Nor me. I'm more concerned with the shape of the torque curve: how it affects the durability of the DSG box, and how it unsettles the handling as you hit max boost. I still feel that too many remaps are just too brutal at <4k rpm, I'd prefer to see a more gentle curve below these engine speeds, with a progressive increase above. You only ever use 5k+ when wanting max power, otherwise it's cruising / pootling about and you don't need a monster dollop of torque at 2.5k to do that....

Back to the Viggen - on a damp road in a straight line in 3rd gear let alone 2nd it would change lanes on a DC, there was that much torque reaction. It was practically undriveable, even before you tried any efforts out of a bend.

I know what you're saying. I like low down torque though.

I like bikes that i can just open up in any gear, at any speed and itll just take off.

Obviously FWD just has its limits doesnt it.

I cant comment on the Viggen because i know nothin about em, it sounds mega dodgey though hsha.

It's all about linearity and progression. The VAG engine designers have got this engine beautifully sorted in that respect. I'd want exactly the same shape curves just bigger numbers at any given engine speed. It's the first 4 cylinder engine that I've driven that is better than the Impreza turbo back I tried back in the early 2000s. Not quite as emotionally engaging as the Alfa flat four, but close.

Can't wait for my 1st test drive in the R400, if the R296 is anything to go by!!

How much is the Golf R400 likely to cost Keith?
