New Golf R

Featured Replies

A lad i know has just bought a 2010 Golf R with a stage 2 tune. 350bhp.

Gotta say. I much prefer the exhausts on the mk6 (is it?) R.

Looks far less tacky than the mk7's 4 pipes.

Havent been in it to comment on performance. Id imagine it goes well though!

I was going to say succession plan is what ever tempts me at the time I am ready to buy a car, and changes every 5 minutes,

although saying that it will most likely a be quick estate next.

Put your holding deposit down on the Golf R estate - now that really is succession planning up front!

So that's 265 bhp to 350 ,has he got brakes and handling to match that grunt?

It is

I have no idea. Probably not haha. Hes only just bought the car tbf.

Cant imagine the brakes and handling will be weak on the R anyway. N hes come from a corsa, so its doubtful he'll push it that hard

Well have just bought the new car, so realistically that would be one of the cars I would be looking at and possibly could afford in 3/4 years times! (He hopes)

After following many Audi SUV'S in the rain some of them have ridiculous tail and brake lights IMO. As do many tall cars now. Audi A3 and S3 I must say look good from behind as do Golfs. Nice and inoffensive.

George,

Good to hear that you were able to get that close to the rear of the R, in your Red Devil mk2

NSL.AVERAGE SPEED CAMERAS Are a real equaliser these days. New drink drive limits and drinking Pyccknn Ctahoapt Russian standard vodka means I will see no tail lights for 48 hours. Pusz

Tom,

I know you are working on the Missus's car succession plan but what is your short - medium vision?

Are you an M2 man also?

Or perhaps, temptation forbid, an R400............or

Short and medium term is to keep the M135i, not sure long term.... Maybe another (facelift) M135i?

I genuinely can't see what I could afford that would come close to the M-lite for all round fun and performance. A sideways move into an S3/golf/A45 doesn't really interest me but I'd ideally like to swap SWMBOs Fabia for a Golf R estate. Having said that over the last few weeks I've been warming more to the idea of keeping the Fabia!

M2 will definitely be worth a look but will no doubt be much more expensive that the M-lite....

You sound like me with bikes.

Just cant see the point in buying something that isnt faster than the one I've already got.

I think its a bug...

Yep that's it! I'd need to see an improvement in fun/performance/quality to justify spending more cash.

The next level up for me would be an M3/M4 but tbh they are nearly double the cost of an M135i.

Much as I like the Golf R I could never give up my M135i for one. Moving from a six cylinder BMW to a four-pot Volkswagen would be a retrograde step (purely imho). No offence Golf R owners out there! Lol

Id agree. Unless you need the 4wd for one reason or another. I cant see why youd bother.

R35 GTR next Tom. ;).

Haha GTR would be awesome, can't see my bank balance loving it tho!

Haha GTR would be awesome, can't see my bank balance loving it tho!

Its worth it.

If i could i would.

They do cost a fortune to run, but they go like mad round the corners haha.

They've been making them for six years now.

Low end prices are too high, but there are some good deals on later ones. Relatively speaking.

MY15 has just been announced.

It's always going to be a big heavy car though.

Oddly, a 3+ year old one seems to have been completely depreciation proof over the last few years.

On a twisty B road I'd rather be in my Fiesta ST though.

About as fun, but if you lose it you are not going fast enough to wipe out half the county.

Just goes to show more speed doesn't necessarily =more fun. :-)

I'd stuff the BMW & take the Golf R anyday!

I've driven (properly) my mates MK4 R32 down my favourite back roads & I was only hitting 5 to 10mph more than what I do in my Fabia through the corners. (4wd system for you). However the straights is how fast do you want to lose your licence!.... :D

My other mate has a M135I & has had "incidents" in it where it steps out wide at the front! Basically he finds the local back roads too small as it also wants to get tail happy! This mate previously had a Scooby P1, Mitsu FTO GPX?, Suzuki Swift, Ford Puma etc.

I sat in his M135I & the Golf is better built, more room in the back, more "practical". I knew about the Golf R estate way back in June but decided against it as I couldn't really justify the extra expense as I would drive it to make full use of the engine.......................by by licence....  ...so went for the next best (GT spec 1.4lt 140PS which I can remap to 170PS plus!)

I know it's personal taste but I would prefer to drive all the wheels with that sort of power......especially with the lovely back roads/winters we have up here!

That's what I always say.

Also why I like the ST, it can be driven at the limit more of the time = more fun.

Great as all these super quick cars are, anywhere other than a track and you are just snatching a few seconds of limit driving here or there.

Unless you are driving in a manner unsuitable for the public highway.

The ultimate in A road blasting though isnt it! :).

Worth noting the warranty companies too isnt it. Whats that company called? Lichfield do them?

No chance id have a gtr without some kinda warranty, as im sure you wouldnt either?

But when yours power sliding with 4 wheels out of a corner, overtakin the local power rangers on their superbikes out of the corners cos they cant ride em properly.

Thats fun...

Warranty doesn't bother me as bell housing and gearbox solenoid cleaning aside, they are well built and reliable until you tune over 600-650bhp.

As much as I like them, they are not the ultimate a road car.

Because once you are used to the power it takes zero skill to dump the throttle on a 550+bhp car that's got four wheel drive, a huge kerb weight, plenty of computer tech and an easy to drive (and impressive) gearbox.

For scaring/impressing people who are not used to that performance it's great though.

While my ones were blisteringly quick I can honestly say I've had more fun in slower cars.

Still do like them though. :)

Ah fair shout. Turn the computer bit off then? ;) hahs.

I bet thats a scary drive.. Hahaaa.

I dont know a massive amount about them, but I've heard the main computer n what not is big money it it goes? Haha

That's the thing I prefer about the M135i.... It's still great fun at sane speeds. The engine also sounds awesome at part throttle and without ragging it.

The interior is also far nicer on the Beemer in my view.

So far I'm loving the winter grip and traction in the M-lite. Far superior to our FWD Fabia vRS. Can't say I've experienced anything like what your mate is doing. It's a very powerful RWD car so needs to be treated with respect. Of course the back end will step out a little if you let it but controlling that is all part of the fun and challenge.

Don't get me wrong I really like the Goof R but I think people get hung up on the 4WD aspect as if it's some magic protective shield. It helps with traction out of corners on slippery surfaces but doesn't do much if anything for lateral grip and certainly doesn't help you stop any quicker :-)

I still maintain that the best car I've owned for fun handling was my '82 sud. 95bhp in a car weighing about the same as a packet of Jaffa cakes. Manual unassisted rack and pinion steering, watts linkage at the back end meant it was so stupidly easy to just rock up to the edge of grip and gently slip beyond it. OK, a current base level 3 cylinder Corsa has it licked for outright grip, but so few cars have any steering feedback any more, that's the progress of electro-hydraulic and worse fully electric PS. I'm still not sure though that the 'sud at 70 on a fast swooping B road was any safer, if not less so than a 300bhp modern hatch at 100+. I know which is more fun that's for sure.

Tom,

So my "Goof" R would seem ideal against the criterion you mention, for the majority British weather conditions then.

Happy to invest (not "hung up on my magic protection shield") in the extra safety and the reassurance this car gives me and my family.

Driving skills/ability aside, I still can have loads of fun! Sounds pretty good too!
