New Golf R

You've not heard of lift off oversteer then?

Its not the same though is it :(.

Tried it with the fabia when it had summers on, and it wasnt much good. The front had so little grip it just understeered if i even touched the accelerator.

Obviously will be giving it a go with the vector 4 seasons though.

Used to get it really good with winters on the front and summers on the back though haha. Was fun. No need for a handbrake at all. Just whipped round.

I think thats why many tyre fitters refuse to fit that set up. That and braking anyway

  • Wow! A bit of a fly on the wall comment in jest has been turned into me supposedly taking the credit for the size of the thread!?! Err...ok...   Just to clarify, I have far more important things to

  • Apologies is this thread is going a bit "off topic", but I'll carry on anyway as there is Golf R content... This is my personal experience of the S3, Golf R and M135i and the respective test drives.

Spitfires and the other Truimph Six cars ie Herald, GT6 etc, single transverse leaf suspension, back off and ties itself in knots as the read suspension unloads, many an accident with this suspension geometry, still gives me a chill, only a motorbike gets close to that terror.

How about a TL1000. A rear suspension reservoir so small that it overheats when pushed hard and all of a sudden you have no damping in mid corner. Ahaha.

In theory one could it in the cupra for the same reason, but I haven't found a bit of tarmac yet on which I've got t sufficiently large balls to try it!

Practice in a snowy carpark. Look like a yob but its great fun haha.

Then start taking your new found skill to the roads ;).

*disclaimer, in simpleton terms: If you crash, it wasnt my fault. Aha.

Probably the same part I have on my SV650S.  Sounds like needs an aftermarket part.

Its not mate.

I used to have an sv650s (:

The TL one was smaller to try and cram everything in such a small space, with such a big engine.

The sv650 one is fine, if not a little undersprung. But it wont suffer from the TL widow making shock problem

That's fine for handbrake turns, but not lift off oversteer!

Yesss it is. Ahaha

So, back on topic...

Saw a white 5 door Golf R on the way into work today.

Have to say I rather liked the look of it.

Was it on its roof?

They are nice arent they.

Little bit tempted yet? ;)

Should do you till the RS comes? ;) aha

I'm still really looking forward the the estate version. SWMBO loves white but I'm not sure it would suit the load-lugger so much. Might be better in Lapiz Blue on that?

Not an R but a GT in Tungsten silver.................

Very nice!

May be the first trial for the R tonight, with ice and maybe a dusting up to 1/2" of snow forecast.

No winters fitted yet, as I'm a Southerner and we don't respect snow much down here  or perhaps it's more ignorance.

Might be a bit of fun though.

Unfortunately no real chance to test the R in Snow ,last night or today around here. Only slush and a light dusting ,so my excitement was well and truly quenched.

May be Another Day soon.

Just had a thought earlier.

Wonder why theyre doing an R estate? Never done a GTI estate have they?

Never the less. Looks to be Very nice

Chances are it'll just perform very well as it usually does.

Sounding good and giving s thrill while keeping you nice and safe.

Boss,

"You was right" Not enough to test it unfortunately.

Glad mine is not White though, in this driving white-stuff.

stever750,

Thanks.

I appreciate your offer of guidance , relating to your knowledge /  experience gained in driving in snow and icy conditions.

However,  I have acquired a little  knowledge myself ,over my years , driving in various adverse weather /road conditions.

My interests is more in getting good knowledge from articles or tests run by auto mags but mainly from members on here, relating to their actual experience of  various tyres brands.

Hence the last two Items I raised relating to winter tyre on a Golf GTI run by mags.staff.

I also read your piece on the winters you have fitted to your Cupra.

Once again thanks for your offer.

Keith

Maybe it would be worth a winter tyre thread, rather than putting Golf GTI winter tyre tests on the Golf R thread?

I think that's what confused Steve, you are posting on here, which kind of suggests you are looking for something specific to use on your Golf R.

Id of thought a GTI would be completely different in the snow compared to the R?

Fwd vs 4wd (okay its fwd biased, but still)

Both good wide tyres though havent they

Indeed, thanks Richard.

Sorry keith, I wasn't trying to be a smart***e by the way, I apologise that most of my posts tend to be somewhat flippant, which balances the serious face I have to put on at work, which involves spending lots of time in the company of lawyers. They're all tongue in cheek and meant to be taken in good humour!
