  • Wow! A bit of a fly on the wall comment in jest has been turned into me supposedly taking the credit for the size of the thread!?! Err...ok...   Just to clarify, I have far more important things to

  • Apologies is this thread is going a bit "off topic", but I'll carry on anyway as there is Golf R content... This is my personal experience of the S3, Golf R and M135i and the respective test drives.

TBH, it was all light hearted. Does it really matter?

Well to me it does but that's my problem.

Hope your gearbox is now performing okay.

I quite enjoy reading this thread (and that includes the banter and off topic sometimes) also chipping in with a contribution here and there.

But let's be honest- it's just a rolling discussion on the internet consisting of various peoples opinions. Which is fine for entertainment purposes etc but it shouldn't be seen as some sort of shrine to this particular Golf or held up as any kind of factual content. In other words.... Keep it lighthearted!

Nobody coming here for info on the Golf R is going to bother reading all 43 pages, unless they are some type of mentalist lol ;-) What happened in the past on the thread is exactly that, buried several pages back where nobody looks anymore :-)

Oi, I hope you're not implicating me, I was the victim! You know, the poor mans Golf R ;) And to think, from my fellow countrymen too!

So I can safely summarise it all thus, thereby saving anyone the hassle of wading abck through it: the Leon Cupra is faster, better looking, and driven by more intelligent people. That should do it.

Your right. Its your problem. Its over now, we've apologised and now you're trying to take it back off topic again when the times passed.

So i cant see your point at this late stage.

So let's get back onto the R.

Wonder if theres many R owners with winter tyres on. Would be pretty good with the 4wd i bet in this snow at the moment. Be good fun.

May be the first trial for the R tonight, with ice and maybe a dusting up to 1/2" of snow forecast.

No winters fitted yet, as I'm a Southerner and we don't respect snow much down here  or perhaps it's more ignorance.

Might be a bit of fun though.

Sounds good you'll have to let us know how she handles.

4 wheel slides sound mandatory haha

Chances are it'll just perform very well as it usually does.

Sounding good and giving s thrill while keeping you nice and safe.

Winters just fitted to Long term Golf GTI @ Autoexpress.

Have you, or is this just related to the AE Golf? I've fitted some vredestein wintrac ultra s to mine, and I'm not overwhelmed for sure, unlike the tyres. I know its FWD and it's damp, but there's not as much progressive grip as I'd expect. The TC is on all the time, even in the dry - the original potenzas weren't as fluffy for sure. I'm surprised because they get good reviews, and their bicycle tyres are awesome in the wet. The Uniroyals I had on the Octy seemed relatively much better.

Snow here now

Anybody want to lend me their R?

Cheaper to buy a set of tyres. ;)

I've got some decent ones.

I've it hasnt made my car 4wd though haha.

I guess I'll just stick to the handbrake

4x4 simply isn't needed with decent tyres though.

Spot on, decent tŷres and you're fine. 4x4 can be useless with the wrong tŷres

Just wanted to be a weapon and start provoking a 4 wheel slide tbh. It looks fun.

FWD is boring isnt it haha. Without the handbrake anyway

And given all cars have 4WBraking 4wd might just encourage / enable you to drive beyond safe stopping distance.

You've not heard of lift off oversteer then?

Never driven those either, but I can get it in my Fiesta ST! :D

The joys of being able to turn all the electrical nannies off.

In theory one could it in the cupra for the same reason, but I haven't found a bit of tarmac yet on which I've got t sufficiently large balls to try it!

Spitfires and the other Truimph Six cars ie Herald, GT6 etc, single transverse leaf suspension, back off and ties itself in knots as the read suspension unloads, many an accident with this suspension geometry, still gives me a chill, only a motorbike gets close to that terror.
