Removing surround from Columbus head unit

Featured Replies

Hi,

My 2009 Superb has just developed the dreaded constant reboot problem. I've only had the car for 2 months so I'm hoping the main dealer I bought it from will resolve the issue, but given the expense of new units, I'm expecting some resistance! So I'm also researching some of the potential fixes on this forum.

I've researched the topic on here but I'm falling at the first hurdle of identifying exactly which unit I have as I can't get the surround off to get at the screws. I've looked at a YouTube video as well (in German unfortunately) but mine just doesn't seem to want to budge, and I'm frightened of trying to prise it off with anything other than a credit card as it may be easily damaged.

Is there any particular technique to getting the surround off?

Start at the bottom is the normally the best way where the airbag warning light is, do not disconnect the wire from that oncethe trim is off, it will feel like it won't come off and a credit card won't be man enough, you need a trim tool or a screwdriver with something to protect the trim, of simply get both hands under it and tug but do it in a manner where you aren't likely to snap or deform the facia surround.

Run the heater at full for five minutes or so to really warm the plastic up and it's easier (but may not be a problem in summer weather...!). I've done mine (fitted a media cable) and my wife's (changed a yeti Bolero for a Columbus) and in both cases started on the top right corner next to the steering wheel.

I'd be inclined to go by Brockysuperb's advice as he actually owns two Skoda's with Columbus fitted, rather than from people who have never owned a Superb II and who links to an image of a Bolero unit. ;)

Works exactly the same way it works in a B6 Passat mate, which incidently I did own and did put an aftermarket DD dvd player in, and then had to fit it to an Octavia MK2 which is so very similar to the Superb 2 radio surround you'd never believe it,

I wondered how long it would take you to notice me again and start again with your Knights of the Round Skoda play  and I thought you had me on ignore anyway?

Brockys advice is ok as well, but you stand to damage the dash soft plastics less if you pull from under the bottom, hth.

I'll start by saying that there are a few deleted posts in this topic just so everybody is aware.... Now onto my main point, can we not dilute this topic by a new user with insufferable rubbish and bygone personal quarrels, I don't want to read it, new members don't want to read it, and nobody else wants to read it. A beady eye shall be kept, that is all.

Thanks guys, I think the heater trick did make a difference, coupled with the fact that I came at it with a bit more force/confidence. i now know I have a 3T0 035 680 with HW: H11 and SW: 1104.

Unfortunately I think I made my case with the dealer a bit harder as I foolishly forgot to switch the ignition completely off before disconnecting the airbag connection so now the system thinks there's an airbag fault which is a bit of a giveaway that I've "messed with it", which is the phrase the dealer will undoubtedly say!  Let's see what happens on Tuesday when I take it in.

One final question, assuming I end up attempting the firmware upgrade fix myself. I've seen mention of the SWL_FIX as well as the upgrade to the firmware. Do I need both, and if so which order to I apply the fixes?

Thanks.

Ask around if someone has an OBD2 reader they would plug in for you, should be alble to reset codes, otherwise look up OBD2 for VAG and see if anyone has had a result with a £15 one and order one, I have this http://iobd2.co.uk/ and I know it worked with a 2007 Passat, I snagged the droid version for £35 just after xmas.

tell the dealer they get to pay for it, its part of the car.(skoda and dealer then split the cost)

car should be good for 6 years under sale of goods act.

if that don't work get it repaired!

dealer did mine eventually but couldn't fix it correctly !  auto electrician sorted it.

firmware vs hardware problem i.e new board but not new module.

Having just done this....

Bottom parts I pried with fingers. Top part clips seem much more resistant to this. Poked a credit card in the gap between the Columbus and top part of fascia one on each side and top unclips fairly easily.
