Columbus, Blue tooth, Voice control AGAIN!

Featured Replies

Hi all, I know this topic comes up on a regular basis.  From these forums I have an idea of the solution, but just want a bit of confirmation first.

The car is a Rapid Sport, 14 plate.  Bluetooth comes as standard.  I swapped the radio out for a 2014 Columbus H10, otherwise the car is standard (no mfsw)   Works fine and with the help of Adamal, vcds coded.

But!

Voice control doesn't work.  It appears she is deaf.  I know this comes up a lot!   Adam and i both think this is a cabling issue and that the microphone from the blue tooth needs to be fed into the columbus and then on again.  Car electrics are outside of my comfort zone, but with the help of the kind people here, i'm prepared to give it a go

I've pulled out the unit and photographed the quadlock on the back of it.  I've labelled the units to lessen confusion when talking about "the red wire at the top"  etc.

What do people think -  is it a matter of swapping cables around or is it going to be splicing them like is described on the my-gti forum?

Thanks everyone

Miles

As kb says there is no input to the input or output pins on the quadlock.

I therefore reckon the wiring (which will be straight to the BT unit) needs to be re-routed into the quadlock via pins 1 and 7 of block C and then back out of pins 4 and 9 back to the BT unit. Unfortunately it looks like you haven't got the simple white plug swap option I mentioned (prob as it was factory fit) but it shouldn't be a hard job.

Happy to help

Adam

Thanks kB, thanks Adam. From the link, would guess its option 1 that would be the easiest and avoid tinkering with the Bluetooth. In other words, run a new, additional microphone into the back of the Columbus and leave everything else alone (if it ain't broken....)

I would have thought option 2 would have been easier and avoid having an additional microphone and any issues that might throw up.

Your current set up must run the mic to the BT module. Check the BT connector against this guide: http://www.my-gti.com/173/volkswagen-skoda-bluetooth-pinouts

Pins 11 & 12 should be populated with the microphone cables.

If it is, I suspect that option 2 is what you need.

Move your mic cables to the Columbus and run two wires from the Columbus to the BT (where the mic was).

Cheers KB and thanks Adam (through pm) for your continuing help.

I've been away this weekend, so haven't made much progress (impressed with the traffic channel on the satnav!).  I'll have a look tonight.

I had the same with my Columbus.

I bought some repair wires off ebay and spliced into the microphone wires. Soldered it all up and fitted the pins in then out of the Columbus.

All works perfect with the one microphone.

Still struggling to find the bluetooth unit itself.  If i can find it, you're right option 2 might be easier, but so far........   BTW, i know that these are often under the drivers seat.  I don't know if it makes a difference but the Rapid Sport (that comes with bluetooth) also has sports seats, not like the others in the Rapid range.  Would that make a difference?

You've got me on that one.

Have a look online for one of the parts catalogues that show you where bits are in the car. Try searching for CarProg2.

I've just swapped my Bolero for a Columbus. The latter is also Deaf!

The Bolero had Voice Control, which I used frequently for calls - it worked faultlessly. All the functions of the Columbus are OK, apart from the voice control. Coding has been done - to no avail.

Reading the posts in this topic, can I assume that the Columbus and Bolero do not work the same, in respect of the connector? Will I need to rewire, or is there something that I am missing?

Andy

I didnt think Bolero did voice control but if it does I suspect its not the same setup as the Columbus. Have you got bluetooth?

Here is the wiring for the Columbus.

You will need to make sure your mic goes to the MIC in pins and if you have bluetooth then out to the blutooth kit on the MIC out pins.

If its acting like its not hearing you then this is likely to indicate that the mic isnt connected as Phil indicates.

If its acting like its not hearing you then this is likely to indicate that the mic isnt connected as Phil indicates.

Or to the fact od reverse order if pins (only two you have) in jack of mic...not on HU side then on the mic side (where mic is fitted)

Can easy check...

Had that case once before...

I do have Bluetooth and this is working fine - the microphone is hearing me using that!

It sounds like you need to reroute the microphone through the in and out pins indicated by Phil to the BT unit. Currently its straight to the BT unit. If its an aftermarket BT loom this is simply done by reversing the little white connectors that are hopefully present on the loom....

I had to follow this guide:

http://www.my-gti.com/1234/volkswagen-rns-510-microphone-connection-for-voice-control

Buy 2 repair wires and cut them in half. Cut the microphone cable and wire the 4 repair wires to the microphone cables.

Then put the repair wire pins in the appropriate connector on the back of the columbus as per the pinout diagram.

You then have the MIC going into the columbus then back out to the blueooth and both work perfectly well with no more of the "pardon!" from the lady in the columbus!

Phil

Right, I have a new work phone, Iphone5c, and now have been considering voice control;.

I have a 2013 columbus unit, 3T0035680L HW08 fw 5320

my BT module is 7P6 035 730L, and just has the one connector going in to it. there are no other sockets.

I have maxidot and MFSW, with a phone button.

I assume the mic cables / in & out are on the bunch connected to the big connector. So. am I right in thinking i  need to cut the Mic out cable and route to Mic in on Columbus, and then Mic out on columbus to Mic in on BT connector?

The BT box was not factory fitted.  What wire is suggested to be used to connect up to the columbus, and does this wire need a connector to go into the columbus?

Once i have done this, will i be able to voice control the phone from the steering wheel?

IIRC, on my Superb, one button held down activated the VC, ( cannot remember which one it was) will this be the same on my MFSW

If anyone is keen to do this for me for some beer tokens in the kent area, I would be eternally grateful. Or if anyone has some pictures to guide me that would really help.

Is there another BT module that will give any more functionality than my current box - Can any read sms on Iphone5?

Thanks and apologies for all the questions

The latter is only possible in rSap mode which neither your module or your phone supports!

You are right in what you need to do re the mic. Trace the mic wires to the bt connector and reroute them via the indicated in-out pins on the Columbus back to the bt connector as per Phil's diagram.

VC should then work via the mfsw push to talk button on the wheel and the Columbus button.

You just need repair wires (000 979 009 e) to push into the connectors and to solder to the existing wires to support the rewiring.

Adam

Hey Adam, thanks for that.

I am getting somewhat confused now. Do I just cut the mic in cable and route that to columbus, out through the stated pins on columbus and join to end that I cut, leaving the MIC out cable untouched?

According to my GTI, it would appear so? they refer to mic cable so would this be both in & out?

think my head is beginning to hurt!

Also, the wires are in a bunch so trying to separate the mic ones may be challenging. Not sure where then mic is,  as was fitted by previous owner

Thanks

Yes you do pretty much exactly that. Trace wires from the mic end which should be in overhead light unit. It runs across headlining and down the A pillar to the bt loom. Separate, cut, and effectively add a loop through the in-out pins on back of Columbus, joining back to the cut wires.

The mic wire referred to is the wire from the mic itself to the bt loom. The in-out reference probably refers to looping in and out of the Columbus.

Just to add hopefully the existing mic wire is long enough so you just add a very short loop in and out of the Columbus. This should mean the mic shielding is all but maintained.

Thanks I'll have a look at the weekend. can you point me to somewhere to buy the mic cable as cannot get any results wen looking for the cable recommended on mygti

cheers adam

This is getting a bit complicated now, I might take it to the chap that fitted my subwoofer! save me screwing it up

Thanks Again
