Disable Start/stop?

Featured Replies

Does anyone know of a way to disable start/stop (on my VRs TDI)?    I know I can turn it off for the duration of a journey by means of the button they provide, but it is always back on again next time - I'd like a setting that turns it off permanently until I choose to turn it back on again.

I know it's suppose to save fuel and be green etc. and I've tried to like it, but I don't.  It works fine, but the unappealing jiggle as the engine stops and then the momentarily diesel-ey sound as it restarts detract from the otherwise refined sound of the car.  Plus, there have been a couple of times when I've come to a stop at a red light just before the lights start turning to green again.  In these situations, I've found that the engine has committed itself to stopping and by the time it's done this and then restarted I've been stuck motionless and frustrated.

Unfortunately I don't believe there is a way to perminently disable StopStart.

VCDS should do it. Think its been done on here

PS, might be wrong though

Is it DSG?  If so I control the start stop with pressure on the brake pedal, i.e. if you hold the car with just enough pressure it does not switch off

I agree, I just got in the habit of hitting the off button immediately I turn on the ignition each time - it just becomes automatic.

Too many toys on the new Mk. 3 - e.g. won't let you start the motor unless you have the clutch depressed. We're not all 18 years old you know.................

You can alter the temperature at which stop start is disabled from minus 50 to Plus 50 degc. Not tried it but aware this works

It can be disabled with VCP or VCDS.

Same as the mk2.

Same as the mk2.

Not my 58 Mk. 2

Must have been a later addition.

You could disconnect the neutral position sensor. Then it will not work.

Same as the mk2.

Most modern cars, that I have driven anyway, have to have the clutch pedal depressed.

Sadly mine has the manual gearbox - otherwise that sounds good.

Does yours always work?  I have noticed on many occasions that the light goes off again after 2 - 3 seconds. Sometimes longer than that. Usually, if it happens, I have to push it 3 or 4 times to get the message across that I don't want it on.

Took it to dealer but sod's law.....  no problem.

Good to know

I used the "Voltage Method" with VCDS software...works fine :)))

So far it works every time with one push

Good to know, thanks.  Mine's temperamental at best.  It rarely works before the engine is started then  about 75% of the time when it's running (90% if it's in D and foot on brake).

I'll take it back again or at least try to get it on camera.

Hmmm... Its bit of a balancing act to actually keep enough brake pedal pressure to disengage the drivetrain whilst not too much pressure to enable the SS.  I don't actually find it that annoying and consider anything trying to save some fuel a benefit as my fuelly shows.  You'll have to give mine a spin next time we're both at the Hut.

When you start the car and try to switch off S/S instantly - it won't work, the light will go out after a few secs.

You have to start moving with the car then you can switch it off.

This is my experience with DSG.

Mine's manual - it might work a bit differently. I turn the ignition on, press the  'cancel S/S'  button, its light comes on (and stays on) and there is no S/S till I next turn the ignition on.

Mostly this works but occasionally I get to a set of lights, then....no engine just as they go green as the damn thing has switched itself back on again.  I'm going to invest in VCDS so I turn it off permanently and do a few more adaptations too.
