As I understand it was the tyres change in to midway fro the race and Charlie Whiting took a few minutes to look at this when the telemetry started to come in and then they would have compared it to lots of other telemetry readings of other cars and it appeared that Mercedes were the main culprits using under inflated tyres, which will of course run hotter and then give more grip but are more likely to fail.

Since it was a new rule only just introduced I believe it was reckoned that Lewis's car particularly was not so far out to warrant a disqualification.  I would have thought they will refine the measuring and tolerances for the rest of the season.

It was measured at the grid at the beginning of the race. Just prior to the warm up lap. I think that's what the office statement said as read out on Sky earlier! The tested only the front 4 cars before the grid clear alarm (30 second warning?)

Hope they did not loose some air/nitrogen when they measured as I keep doing.  Generally add one PSI and assume it will leak back to the pressure I wanted.  Also the air put in by the compressor is of course warm and will cool down and reduce the pressure in the tyre when it returns to ambient.  So many factors to consider.  (Unless they fill from a reservoir).

When we measure the pressure in a tyre I presume we are measuring how much more the tyre pressure is than the current pressure in the open.  So really an air pressure of 19.5 is actually around 34 true ie against zero.  If the ambient pressure dropped half a psi then the tyre would appear to have half a psi all other things being equal.

Williams had completely different types of tyre on recently and were not penalised.

apart from the drive-through for Bo77as you mean??

Red Bull engines for next year?

Autosport claim that it wont be Renault for RBR or STR

Renault will only power a new works team or a re-branded Lotus.

apart from the drive-through for Bo77as you mean??

I must have missed that, did think it was odd they had got away with it. Seems as though it's Ferrari engines or nothing for red bull next year ?

They've been in talks with Mercedes - However I doubt Lauda & Wolff will contemplate supplying both Red Bull teams.

2 minutes after I typed the last post this was published:

"Mercedes board rejects proposal to supply Red Bull with F1 engines"

Either Ferrari or Honda for RBR and STR then. Unless Honda make big strides forward over the winter, over to you Maranello.

However - just like Mercedes, championships are important to Ferrari.

What could motivate Ferrari to rent their now very fast engine to Red Bull who will probably do a better chassis?

Mark Webber yesterday:

"Ex-Formula 1 driver Mark Webber says the strength in depth on the current grid is the lowest it has ever been.

The Australian, who retired in 2013, feels the number of 'pay drivers', such as Sauber's Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericsson, is not good for the sport.

"These guys are on a phenomenal level but the depth has never been weaker," Webber told BBC Radio 5 live.

"We need to get the calibre that we have at the front of the grid. We need more depth and the cars to be faster."

Pay drivers bring sponsorship to secure a seat in order to help their team reach its annual budget.

Webber added: "If you go from the top 10 back, there are a lot of pay drivers. This is not good.

"The physical components are the lowest it's ever been. It's like a rugby tackle but 30% softer."

sour grapes Mark, since no-one if F1 offered you a job after Vettel spanked you year in year out?

I read Mark Webbers' comments and thought exactly the same, sour grapes.

F1 has always had a few drivers that really shouldn't be there, so nothing new there.

What he failed to mention was how well his replacement had done.

Yeah Ricciardo got Webbers seat and smashed Vettel.

Made the old Aussie look a bit slow TBH.

Danil, Max & Carlos aren't exactly slow in Red Bull sponsored cars either.

Anyone have any good f1 podcasts they can recommend? Specifically would love to hear the engineering behind the cars.

Not tried them but:

Nissan-Renault chairman Goshn says Renault race engines will not be supplied to any other F1 race team.

Keep up mate.

#881 refers.

Also Rosberg on his 4th engine. Seems like Merc are unsure about risking the updated engine that had issues at Monza.

Keep up mate.

#881 refers.

What interested me is that it was Goshn who said it, Head of the Nissan-Renault Alliance and he has said he want Renault to the return to the form where they win the Constructors title which they half done in half of the years in the last quarter century.

Money is not really a problem for this 100B Euro turnover company who is use to winning but missed the jump by starting development late on the turbo engine with energy recovery systems.

Renault can be quite chuffed that they already supply to Mercedes A and B class road cars and Nissan and Renault lead such roll outs like electric cars and are the only mass market car manufacturer in F1, shame other car companies VAG etc, do not join the pinnacle of motor racing.

Still, VAG are reigning WRC and Le Mans 24 champions (with 2 different Brands) and frequently win WEC races with a third brand and GT races with two of those and yet another. Any of these could be considered more relevant to road car sales than F1.

Is F1 the Pinnacle of Motor Racing any more - given that it is many seconds slower than it was in 2004, and that GP2 and FR3.5 qually times would often get onto the F1 grid?

There must be a case for WEC being the top dog at the moment.

Super high tech 1000bhp+ cars being thrashed flat out for up to 24 hours.

Its no 90 minute Sunday drive looking after the tyres and saving fuel - I do that when I visit my daughter.

Sadly WEC is not much of a competition now Toyota have give up the pursuit and Audi and Porsche, two branches of the same company is a bit pointless.

I like the cars, got a photo with Loterer at Silverstone which you could probably not do with an F1 driver, but just not enough competition.

Citroen and Ford seem to have lost the plot in WRC, again great meeting Latvala and Michelson but hardly much of a competition.

As Lauda said at one of the MotoGP meeting, this is the best machine racing you can currently see.

Use to follow WTCC a bit but now no SEAT that is a bit dull too.

Carlos Sainz junior said he was surprised just how little F1 cars were quicker than GP2.

Perhaps adopt some of the Red Bull X1.....

That's it then, truck racing for everyone

That's it then, truck racing for everyone

Four wheels good, two wheels better.

As Brad Pitt (and Nick Lauda comments on the fun level) says in Hitting the apex "a MotoGP bike accelerates faster than a F1 car".
