BATTERY... Whats the largest battery anyone has fitted to a Mk2

Featured Replies

Lorry sized battery is the largest I've seen in. Skoda scout.

The police ones will normally have a split charging system and a aux leisure battery in the boot somewhere hidden away.

Hi,

Varta Silver E44 from Performance Batteries  (same as Bosch S5 ?)  £69.50, next day (free) delivery and 5 year guarantee !

Oh boy, does it turn over now !!!

Lloyd

The Scout almost didn't start a couple of days ago, Bitten the bullet and ordered the Varta E44 from Amazon. £67.95 delivered. First impressions are its much more powerful.

Mark

Indeed it is Mark, I have the Varta E44 fitted to my 2.0PD and I only paid £70 ish delivered last year. My wife also has one in her Seat Altea XL 170 which has more gadgets than mine, it has more than enough oomph for the job and for future tech mods.

Decent? In need of a decent powerful battery lol

There is a common theme running through this and several other battery related threads recently.

The Varta E44 and Bosch S5 (same battery, different branding) are very well respected and proven batteries.

Remember you need an 096 (size / fitment) for the MkII Octavia.

096 should be ample for a MK2

Make sure you get the highest cca and ah you can

  • 7 months later...

So I've been having a couple of small issues lately.

If the car is sat for a day or two when you start it it's very rough when turning over but starts fine but just doesn't seem as instant as previous.

Hot starts it feels even rougher.

While sat with the radio on and engine not running a couple of times I've had a warning pop up on the Columbus warning me to start the engine to prevent the battery from dying.

Often if I'm sat with the ignition on and engine not running and stereo on for a few minutes when I start the car again it idles at 1000rpm and the battery voltage showing on the maxidot is under 14v.

I put a multimeter on the battery and it read 12.4 volts which then dropped to 11.9v with the ignition on. It read 10v while cranking.

Took it into quickfit for a free battery test and the printout report came back that the battery was fine with 96% starting capacity remaining (whatever that means).

I've ordered a new battery anyway as I don't trust the kwickfit printout.

Got a Varta E44 (same as the Bosch S5) for £67.50 with free delivery arriving tomorrow.

Phil

100% a failing battery.

100% the reason I'd never set foot in a Kwikfit.

It's the original battery (going on for 8 years old now) and the same as you had fitted to yours (the weak 340CCA one). The little "magic eye" thing on top of the battery is black too which also adds to the case of a dud battery.

For the sake of £68 I'll stick a new battery in and I'm pretty confident it will sort it.

His expression made me "LOL" when he spots the camera;

Haha, sprung!

What a great way to make sure the guy is giving your car his full attention!

£68 is a great price too. The battery will probably now outlive the car!

Haha. Yeah! He just looked so confused.

It's a cracking price I think. Considering Euro Car Parts are selling the Bosch S5 096 for £102 which is actually just a Varta E44 096 with Bosch stickers on!

It probably will outlast the car yes. Although I'd like to think it's still working in 8 to 10 years time! We certainly plan to keep it for as long as possible. Till it either don't drive any more or becomes too expensive to fix!

It did the 1000rpm idle again this evening after being sat 5 minutes copying some music from the SD to the HDD on the Columbus. Also sounded dog rough when starting. Will have the new battery in tomorrow all being well.

Phil

Why not a Varta E44? Same specs as the Bosch and £65

That's the one I've gone for. Got it for £67.50 delivered.

Phil

I know but everyone seems to say Bosch S5

Sent from my Galaxy S5

Yeah I think the Varta can get forgotten about for some reason.

My OEM battery has Varta on it and that's lasted 8 years. They are also the same battery as the Bosch so it's a no brainer really!

I'm sure I paid more for a battery for my old Felicia 1.3 SPi L&K a few years back!

To be fair this thread dates back to last year and it was reported then that the Bosch S5 is the cheaper Varta E44 in disguise.

True. It's obviously gone the other way now.

The Bosch seems to have shot up in price but the Varta hasn't.

Phil

Sorry, I've just re-read my post and realised it doesn't read right. As far as I am aware the Varta has always had the lower cost and is therefore the better value option.

I bought the Bosch before realising that the Varta was physically the same battery as the Bosch but with a different sticker.

The point I was trying to make was that this was mentioned quite early on in the thread so I didn't think we were still pushing solely the Bosch.

Please excuse what I suspect is a newbie question. My 1.8 TSi (DSG) has a huge box, and I suspect will easily accommodate the E44 referenced above. But I'm slightly concerned at alarm codes, etc, being reset on replacing the battery. Is it really as simple** as disconnecting/reconnecting?

Many thanks,

Mike

**ignoring cleaning, greasing, liberal application of swarfega and ripped knuckles...

Yes it is that simple, the dash will light up like a Christmas tree when you turn the ignition on after the change but a quick drive up the road resets all the systems and extinguishes the lights.

No issues with the alarm or stereo code.

The only thing you will have is a power steering light- just drive and it will go straight out.

You will then need to manually raise and lower all 4 windows to reset the auto down/up feature.

Your trip computer figures will be reset.

That's it.

It will definitely accommodate the E44 096 battery. All the battery trays and boxes on the MK2 Octavia are big enough for this battery.

Here is where I got mine from for £67.50 with free delivery;

Slightly off topic a bit, but a few weeks ago the Scout battery randomly died. (again)

So hopped in the VRS for the day to complete my errands... to cut a long story short, it was a Sunday, I needed a battery, went to Halfords as was the only place open, got their own branded Battery, (the cheaper of the 2) for 60 odd quid with a trade card...

The size of the battery is bigger than the one that came out (a sealed unit) wheras the Halfords one is a top-up with water jobby...  So had to find some pipe to run down to the ground from the over spill hole to prevent acid damage on the engine bay...

Would have prefered a maintainence free sealed option but as said before I needed one that day and options were limited.

The little fury jacket / coat thing now doesn't fit the new battery as it is too small.... does anyone know if they make them in bigger sizes or am I going ot have to wrap it up in cardboard...

Thanks In advance.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've just checked my battery and it's an Exide 096 rated at 72AH and 720 CCA supplied by Eurocar Parts... According to paperwork it was purchased by the previous owner in Oct 2012 ... I've only had the car since July 21st
