how to join dashcam footage and remove overlaps

Featured Replies

The blackvue cameras produce many small files and also have an overlap.

In order to upload longer videos that 1 to 3 minute without overlap you need to spend ages with a video editor but there is a program that can do it automatically for you though instructions are hard to find.

so here they are.

download 'registrator viewer' free program but donations gratefully received

start the program

left click "file -open"

select the files you wish to join

nb if you have a twin camera system like the blackvue 2ch hd then just select the files ending in F.mp4 (F=front)

you can use the control key on the keyboard to select individual files from the file list.

the selected files are loaded into the bottom right window of the registrator program

The program auto groups files added here, for me that put the clips in the wrong order so check the footage by pressing the play icon just to the left of the file list.

If the order is wrong, select all the files, right mouse click and left mouse click on ungroup all.

Files can be sorted by left mouse clicking on the (filename, date time etc) tabs at the top of this file list.

Left mouse click on the 1st of your selected files (top) and then while holding the shift key on the keyboard left click the last file (bottom) -the selected files are now highlighted.

right mouse click over the selected files and in the menu that opens left click on "save whole group"

A new window will open and the selected files are added to that window.

re select all the files as previous and right mouse click somewhere over them, a new menu appears, left click on "remove intersections by time"

click on the three dots (full stops not women's complaint) and select where the outputted file will be placed (name the output file.

You may wish to un tick "media info" to make the file smaller

click save and you are done.

nb 2 . if you want to upload the file to the web you may wish to decrease the size. use the free program "hanbrake" if you don't already have one. easy to use - though heavily slanted towards products from the company who likes to sue, it still works for proper pc's

I just use windows live movie maker.  Sure you need to check the image at the very end of the last clip and match it to a point about 2 seconds in on the next clip before joining, but it makes it more of a challenge :D  Even if 1 or 2 frames out you don't notice once playing. :)
