Fabia VRS to Megane 225

With my commute being <100 miles a week we really only need one diesel mile muncher rather than both the VRS and Ibiza.

Plan was to leave Mrs Pasty commuting the Fabia until it get to it's second cam belt then swap and she can use the Ibiza, giving me the Fabia to play with.

However by that point the Fabia will be worth feck all and be 12 years old, and to become a proper toy need a remap etc etc.

As such I keep having naughty thoughts of cashing it in while it's still worth something in it's standard form and getting something more fun with the resulting cash.

An '04 plate Megane 225 has appeared on a forecourt I drive past everyday and the price in the window is sorely tempting.

Am I crazy for even considering it?

I have a horrible feeling that an 11 year old Megane will break....a lot....

I personally wouldn't, but that's me. I know someone who had a low mileage got written off and was only offered a pitiful amount by the brokers for it. French electrics being what they are.. I'd stick with another VAG if you want a change, something you know is reliable and a bit quick should you want it.

Didn't someone on the forum (can't remember if it was on the Octavia section or General car chat) recently swapped for a Megane, a formula one I'm sure, the driving was such a massive improvement and he/she was overjoyed. Until it destroyed itself and he/she swapped back to something more reliable. I am sorry I cannot provide times dates places etc. But I am certain it was on the forum a few months back.

In my opinion it wouldn't be a very sensible swap from a well built German engineered car to a French car. The minefield of buying second hand cars I suppose. It could be the best car you've ever owned.

Yeah, you need to think if it was parked in reverse with the price in the back window....

It will break, a lot of wearing parts are expensive, fuel economy will soon get boring, insurance will be expencive (just thinking about your claim also)

Not to mention taxing it straight away as an added cost.

It's everything the Fabia isnt. Maybe you should consider something 1.8t?

riddled with electrical faults we have them all the time in work and the front suspension is another story look in to the problems with the hubs

at less than 100 miles per week why saddle yourself with a dirty, smelly, noisy, understeery bloody diesel...let alone two of the buggers?? jeez, petrol is far more fun :) VAG build quality is massively overrated in my experience and they're generally boring cars

A friend of mine had the F1 version a few years back.. Had nothing but problems with it, electrical faults, injectors, throttle body, air con and it didn't like passing many petrol stations.. He got rid and got a Focus ST.. Surely you could get a decent Audi S3, Leon Cupra or a Golf GTI for a similar price?

I remember offering to help change a colleagues bulb last winter on an 02 plate 1.4 petrol Megane.

The entire casing plastic of the bulb holder had melted away to nothing, had to just get the metal to connect and shove it back in.

I know there are plenty of decent cars out there for the money that could be made selling the Fabia.

The same garage has a mk2 petrol Octavia VRS and an Impreza WRX estate for very similar figures.

I've just always fancied one of the quick Meganes.

That said i was left wholly underwhelmed by the DCI 175 Megane I test drove as a potential replacement for the written off Fabia.

But then that had done 100+k but the gear linkage seemed to have a ridiculous amount of slack in it.

Seems they've lopped another £500 off the price online and given the 260bhp estimate i'd assume it's already got a remap on it

I reckon if they'd throw in at least a 6 month warranty it's gotta be worth a punt.

hmmm test drive tomorrow?

I'm sorry but that really is an ugly car and will leave you with a MEGrAiNE  lol

But in all fairness if thats what you are after then good luck to you. The older v6 clios are prettier though

I'd go for an Octy vRS myself. Also my dad has the new L&K and looks to die for (not too slow either, the 1.8TSi) but then it is 25K!!!

V6 Clios are a lot more expensive though

Own a clio 200 which has been faultless for nearly three years and a whole host of track day abuse. A massive, massive amount of fun out of the box which nothing which I've owned or driven from VAG can hold a candle to for smiles per mile.

Also had a Megane R26 which I sold within 7 months. Massively capable car, especially with the diff but just not as much fun as the clio and thought I might as well save some money and go back to a VRS. Seating position in the megane is a joke as well unless you are 5 foot tall.

IMHO renaultsport make the best hot hatches consistently.

Neither car missed a beat or had any fault whatsoever.

I love the VRS for what it is - cheap, reasonably quick, an easy drive but it is like driving the titanic in comparison to the clio.

Horses for courses.

P.s. If you want some fun and a reasonably reliable car and don't mind the seating position and ****e gear change I would be looking at a well looked after clio 182 or even a 172.

Mention of V6s here - look good, sound good, go poorly. Porn on wheels though.

Exactly, its not all about "winning races".

Truth is, there are no races, you can be smug you think you are faster than someone on the road but that doesn't make you a racing driver (thats what the tracks for).

Of course, if thats part of the reason on your purchase then thats what motivates you.

To be honest though, I've been in a big v8 6.2 VXR Menaro on a few strips, its quite slow in comparison to quite a lot of things there! To the qtr line plenty of stuff like Corsa/Nova red top just killed it.

But it sure does feel good to be in a car making that kinda noise even if you come in last. I don't think you can beat that satisfaction with any kind of acelleration or straight line speed to be honest.

aren't both of these the early megane, that you don't really want?

why not go for more fun and less practical, you'll still have one of the other stinky diesels when needed - mx5 or s2000 :)

Because he lives in Glo'ter where it rains 349 days of the year?

A ragtop, are you NUTS?
