Citigoing...

Featured Replies

I've had my Citigo for a little over a year. Despite a few niggles here and there, it's a pretty awesome car all-round. And it's my 'baby' and I love it!

It's done a fair mileage and got me to many a place for fun, or when I've really needed to be places. It's been an absolutely fantastic first car with a lot of fun styling, and a whole chunk of character (something that I think is a really great bonus to have on a first car). When a first car is full of character and quirk, then you become a 'friend' of the car, and feel part of it.

I've absolutely loved driving around in it, and will continue to do so.

However, I was reading up on the articles for the new 2015 Polo GTi. Thought it sounded appealing, so went to Scotland's largest Volkswagen dealership to look at it in person.

I've fallen in love.

And as I am looking for something slightly more spacious, and certainly more powerful, it has come at a pretty good time. The garage are doing an outstanding deal on PCP, so I'm almost certain I will be swapping to the Polo GTi within the next year.

I do absolutely LOVE the Citigo though. It's a cracking little car. And for the mean time, I will continue to enjoy its character; the fact it REALLY BADLY wants to be a good handling hot-hatch, just without the whole performance thing. But with the styling of the spoiler and diffuser etc, the fun and funky 'go-faster stripes' and the lowered springs, it just feels so planted and pushable on the road. But I'm excited to get a car that will be equally (well, better) handling and a little bit more performance. The car enthusiast inside of me is excited with anticipation of owning the GTI. The heart inside of me is sad at the thought of losing 'Shelby', my first car; and a friend.

I'm a big fan of the new Polo GTI and it is currently top of my 'Car to buy' list for when I retire in just over 3 years time (a list that I will obviously keep updated until I retire). Will probably replace Mrs T's Fabia vRS so will be a 5-door DSG version with a number of choice extras - that way I get to keep my Citigo as well!

Or I might just blow everything and buy a Porsche Cayman!!!  :D  :D  :D

It's a cracking car! Suiting replacement to the vRS, very similar cars. I'd go for the manual, as the difference in torque is substantial from the figures, and it's an extra 2 grand for a 19 year old, which is a lot of money!

Mine will be a 3-Door 6 Speed Manual. But the DSG is great.

I was insured on my parents new 3 litre twin turbo BMW 330GT M-Sport, with the 8-Speed DSG. Loved the gearbox, but I wouldn't splash out that much quite yet. It did convince me however that I wanted a car with more power than the putt-putt wagon! (I do love that Citigo, though, a lot! )

You can go a whole lot more wrong that a Cayman! It was on our hitlist before we decided on the BMW!

Be a shame to see you leave (****** never game me my springs...) I hope you'll stick with us during your ownership of a VW? And the Citigo is very spacious I'll have you know ;) my disabled co-worker whom I've given a lift too (fairly large in size) says its the roomiest car she's been in  anyway hope you enjoy the new ride and keep in touch with your brethren of the Citigo club :)

Mrs T prefers automatics now (we are both in our 50s!) and doesn't getting any pleasure from changing gears and pressing clutch pedals! I, on the other hand, love it which is why I got bored with the Mondeo within 12 months! I've had some nice cars over the years (mk1 Scirocco GTI, Mk2 Golf 16v, Mazda MX5 to name a few) but the proliferation of speed cameras etc mean that speed is no longer the be all and end all. I take inspiration from James Hunt, 1976 F1 World Champion, who drove an Austin A35 van after he retired. Why? "Because I can 4-wheel drift it around a roundabout at 30mph!"

Skoda wouldn't fit them for me after all the fuss. Had to send them back to Germany, so lost 30 quid on postage!   Otherwise they'd have been down there by now! :D
I will stick around this forum, though, don't anticipate leaving any time soon! :)

Understandable, so do my folks! Yea, I don't risk the speeding these days. Too many police cameras and traffic cameras! But you can still have fun! :D The Polo GTI should epitomize that enjoyment.

Police are hopeless in my area, hell even they speed (you can happily sit behind an officer doing 5 over with no worries) I only speed on motoryways (75-80) but keep it sensible below that and keep to the speed limit (although I appear to be the only person that does)

My pet hate is people who drive at 40 in a 50 zone and then remain at 40 when the speed limit reduces to 30; completely unaware of their surroundings,

And whilst I'm having a moan there was an eejit on the M23 this evening doing about 45mph - flippin' dangerous as the closing speed is significant especially as many drivers aren't expecting it, resulting in short notice lane changing, braking etc.

It's more the opposite, people who drive say 45 in a 40, then proceed to drive 45 in a 60, like why? Might as well attempt to do 60 if you're going to speed in a 40, I had a real booboo the other day due to this, following a driver doing 25 in a 30, coming up to a 40 and we get to the 40, he's sped up to about 30 now, I see the coast is clear and begin a safe overtake just as he's speeding up.. great, not embarrassing at all as I saved no time in overtaking him because he suddenly decided 40 mph isn't that scary

You always remember your first car, and as a first car the citigo is a stunner!

Mines been a treat in the 2 years I've had it. Very practical for its size, including several "dump runs" and the odd track day. I've enjoyed all the journeys. It's one of the few simple "as it says on the tin" type car. Without a doubt the true last value for money Skoda.

My first car was a 1981 Mini. The Citigo is the closest I've come to it since in terms of fun driving.

You will definitely remember your first car for ever. My was Ford Taunus 1976. When we went to test drive, seller advised to keep windows closed, as otherwise petrol fumes will come in the car. Petrol tank and boot was so rotten. :giggle:

Camlep: How about new Skoda Fabia vRS, if it's coming some day?

Exactly this.

Original Mini. Mk1 Ford Ka, Skoda Citigo. Great fun small cars with brilliant handling. The first 2 are somewhat agricultural compared to the Citigo but that's progress for you.

In nearly every single way, this post could've been written by me, and I intend to swap the Sport for a Polo GTI within the next year. Interesting that they have one in your dealership - my local says they won't take delivery of one for a good while yet.

What's the deal on your insurance as a nineteen year old btw?

I agree with you about the PCP - one deal I have on the table is better than my vRS from 4 years ago on the VAT free offer.

I loath and detest the mk3 fabia, in all respects. In my opinion it's an clumsily designed car with horrible lines. I wouldn't consider a vRS, even if they eventually released one. I like the mk2 Fabia vRS, and could get one of the remaining pre-registered ones left in my Skoda Dealership, but I prefer the styling, engine and overall idea of the GTI - in my opinion, it's more car for your money. :)

Interesting to know somebody out there is having the same thoughts as me!

To be fair, this one was somebody else's car; one of their technician's had bought one on pre-order, and this was it in the show room waiting delivery. The garage were brilliant at opening the doors up to let us have a look inside, and giving us a walking round guided tour of the car. But I respected the fact it was someone else's car, so didn't get too up-close. It was beautiful, though, and convinced me that I'm swapping. The photos look great in the magazines, but it doesn't do it justice. Needs to be seen in person. It's stunning.

Insurance is only about 100 more than it is for my Citigo just now; roughly 650ish a year fully comp @~12,000 miles a year. However, by the time I'll get it I will be 20 and have 3 years no claims rather than 19 with 2. So hopefully might come down a touch more. But it's not ridiculous!

The PCP deals offered on the new Polo GTI are fantastic.

Couldn't agree more with the new Fabia, especially after owning one for 2 weeks

Joking apart, I think it could be my least favourite looking hatch in the last few years. It's utterly dreadful. It's taken a step backwards from the mk1 Fabia!

Let's agree we disagree. :notme:

I'm starting to think I'm the only person in the world who likes the Mk3 Fabia. I couldn't wait for the ugly Mk2 to be replaced.

My 8 year old likes the fabia estate, he's obvioulsy a fan of reasonably priced practical cars lol

I saw a Race Blue one at my dealer and it looked ok until I saw the ridiculous price [emoji19]

Another slightly pro Mk3 person here, but only the exterior, interior seems pretty drab and I'm not a fan of that "denim" seat fabric they offer. Mk2 just looked wrong to me and very OAP orientated, a little too cute etc. Just a shame they weren't a little more brave with the design though as it really is just a mk1 with some edgy lines on it. Price is a little high too which now makes the Polo a much more viable alternative in comparison.

Finally, I've found the advertising and praise with this latest offering has been very in your face which, if anything, makes me quite synical. I've come to realise that even though a certain car has been flooded with awards upon release it often leads to reports of shoddy reliability and build quality in the years following.

The gap in value is truly disappearing my VAG friends! :S

I completely agree with the fabia's interior. As much as I hate the exterior of the car, it's the inside that puts me off. The inside of my Citigo Elegance Greentech is comfier, better equipped, and less clumsily designed. (And I'm comparing to the top of the range one that was in my SKODA Dealership that I day in that was - gulp - 17,000! The polo GTi was infinitely nicer inside, but with the nicer engine. And I'm swaying towards VW than Skoda. A major deciding factor for me has been Skoda's attractions customer service; I'm 99.99% certain I will never own another Skoda! The cars are OK, but their service leaves a lot to be desired.

And this is the problem, now that the brand doesn't have to try any more to win fans with superior customer service and obvious competitive pricing, it does seem they are slipping a bit despite continually being near the top of surveys (again, the cynic in me doesn't quite believe this).

I'm hopefully benefiting from the shocking position of SEAT customer service on the surveys and the huge efforts they are now trying to make to catch up at last, partly due to the recent success of the Leon. Haven't got any complaints so far to be honest, but if I do upgrade to a newer model of the trio then I may go VW for the residuals and the expertise of the 3, which I've come to realise is a bit lacking with SEAT. This isn't a critism of them per se, but more because of the much lower numbers of Miis about. According to a seemingly knowledgable technician, the sharing/passing of technical information from VW to Skoda and Seat isn't quite as instant and transparent as one would believe as I recently found out when asking about a PAS software update.
