Another MY16 car built and on its way!! :-)

Now that it's June can we expect a revised (and hopefully more accurate) brochure to shed light on some of our queries?

Ah but was it built with smart link?

Hmmm skoda don't have much history of accurate brochures

I called the dealer this morning. He sent me a scan of the new Irish brochure stating 5.8". I know he's going on a two day course on the new system soon so might know more then, but if I was in his shoes I'd have gone with the worst option too.

Brochure says smart link is standard, doesn't mention the reversing camera but a Skoda brand specialist confirmed to him it was standard so I'll be expecting that.

I'm edging to the side of the 6.5" coming with the car based on evidence from everywhere else bar the UK and Ireland sites. Full mirror link functions won't work with the current configuration. I resisted ordering nav today.

Also, PFD looks like drive mode selection. I have that on my Leon FR and found the VRS a little less urgent than my car. Tempted to order it just to stick it in sport once I get it to maximise response. Thoughts? I'm aware its essentially a pedal box.

Alas no :-( was too late by the time I tried to add it to my order as car spec had become locked few weeks prior to build :-(

Not holding much hope that possible to retrofit to the same head unit

When u asked skoda UK they said it was just a software upgrade as the hardware was all there. They did say it could only be done at the factory though (but did say he wouldn't comment on what other people have done)

At thus point it doesn't matter what Skoda said as I don't think they have a clue, so better not to have high hopes.

I'm sure something more concrete will materialise on this topic in a couple of months.

^  As above, SUK don't have a clue.

I don't want a crappy little screen, and i want somehting i absolutely 100% know will run my classic ipod (controlled from the head unit).  Only way i can guarantee that is to spec a columbus.   Order going in later today hopefully.

I know what you mean, for me it's not so much about the size of the screen, (it's really only 1/2 an inch) but more the resolution. When phones these days are using screens that are 4x the res of your massive TV going back to something like 400x240 will be quite jarring!

I am tempted to go columbus to ensure it all works too, but there is no way I can justify the £1500 difference in cost (I am getting Amundsen for free)

I certainly couldn't justify the cost of columbus versus the functionality of the unit, with mass solid state storage so cheap, you can store all your files on SD for buttons, and personally I know where I am going the majority of the time, the remainder of the time I use my phone or my existing garmin when abroad to cut out the roaming data costs. Im not really overly bothered about the screen size either, but I NEED smartlink, can't wait to see a MY16 VRS in the flesh as I fell that will be the only way to be absolutely sure. And will be interested to see if there is a difference between UK and Ireland apart from smart link apparently being standard here.

Would be interested out of the people who are getting smartlink whether you are using it for Android Auto or apple car play? (another thread perhaps?)

The next thing people will be writing about is the fact it only works with a selection of (Android) phones..

Of that I can guarantee! But at least for now I have a Nexus5 so there should be no reason why it would not work when I collect my car at the dealer

From what ive understood the only working ones are couple of HTC and Samsung phone. Could be mistaking..

SmartLink will require a couple of threads of its own, I currently have the iPhone 6+ so worst case scenario ill mount it over the Bolero for the full carplay experience  :D

Hoping those MY16 cars start coming through thick and fast with and without Smartlink so we can start a Smartlink thread and get to understand what Smartlink is all about.

I wonder if Smartlink manifests itself through to the Maxidot as well (although doubt it as I suspect the phone drives the car's screen and nothing more). Chain of thought here is that having smartphone notifications on the maxidot is kind of like a Smart Watch for the car... You can view notifications without taking your eyes too far off the road.

I'll wait for that Smartlink thread to be set up! [emoji12]

Edit: Why is Smart Watch (as one word) being starred out to Smart***ch ?!

Thats the problem with android, I do some work with a software house and they have upwards of 50 android devices between phones and tablets for app testing. On the other hand they have 3 iPhones and 2 different sized iPads for testing. I have tried android but went straight back to iPhone after 6 weeks for me the greatest plus for android is also its greatest weakness and thats the staggering diversity between native android, operator customised android, user customised android and the staggering array of differing devices. I feel that carplay users will probably have a better overall experience with SmartLink.

Now you see, I went from a horrid, awful iPhone, to a superb Sony android, the Sony actually works as a phone, gets great signal and you can gear people on calls, compared to the horrendous IPhone, which spent more time dropping calls than actually holding them. Oh and the Sony us waterproof and Android is so much better os in my, a users opinion

My intention wasn't to turn this into a droid vs iOS platform war, both systems have plusses and minuses, I was really just making the point that the carplay experience will possibly be smoother as the heterogenous nature of android with the separation of hardware from software can make a unified and ubiquitous experience difficult to attain for relatively new standards. And thats not to say that carplay may be any better, Apple may make a complete balls of the implementation and we could all be sitting around with useless latest gen phones from both stables.

I seem to remember android auto needs to have lollipop or later to work - so a lot of current android phones are not yet there. I have 2, work phone is a 2 year old galaxy S4 which has had the lollipop update, andf a 6 month old Moto G 4G (personal phone) which hasn't. So as of today only my work phone will work with smartlink
