which oil to refill high mileage Octavia 1.9 tdi BXE, qg1 service

Featured Replies

hi

I'm on a low budget and had to replace my old taxi so bought a high mileage  (229000)!  Octavia mk2 ( April 2010 first registration) . Last night oil warning light came on. Checked dipstick twice: dry!    went home right away. Trying to do the right thing: read manual: it is the BXE engine and has variable service interval (QG1) so should use        VW  506 01  or VW 507 00 specified oil.. I still have some oil I used on my old  2003/4Octavia 1.9 tdi  Mk1 which is specified to VW 50500 and 500 00.. Do you think I can use that to refill oil?   Was told that  last oil change  was done 10000miles ago.

Also would appreciate a comment on cambelt change: the previous owner said he used to change every 40000miles- last at 198000. Initially I thought that is a little bit overcautious but reading through the forums it might be the right thing on this BXE engine MK2.

Thanks

VW505.01 5w 40 or VW507.00 5w 30 would be your best choice, possibly the first one on a high mileage motor. Cambelt is a little enthusiastic at 40k miles, I'd probably be looking at 60k miles. The big failing on the BXE engine is throwing a rod through the side of the block, not anything that a cambelt would cause.

thanks. Purchase was  under extreme  limited time and money frame , normally wouldn't have bought with 230 K miles on clock, but  also had had  very good experience with 1.9 tdi mk1 in the past - only now have become aware of BXE  potential problem.

Went to Halfords this afternoon and gave them the registration number to look up the appropriate oil . IT is  equal to  for  vw 504  00 and 50700  oil it says on the can. Filled  up a litre or so. Looking on the ground later , noticed some oil on the ground.

Also had noticed smoke thru  exhaust , particularly when changing gears between 1 and 2nd and 2nd and 3rd in previous days

Already wonder if engine replacement is on the cards?  Read that any TDI engine starting with 'a' engine code is better. Which years had these engine codes?

will need mechanic to give me his opinion. Any comments wellcome

Thanks

This saga goes on .... after refilling oil with a litre of that Halford oil, I got ca 100 miles before oil can warning light came on again. Few drops on the floor when I filled it again. Some vague smell of oil buring. Needing almost 1 litre oil per 100 miles is  sending a clear message ob a problem. But what exactly is the problem? Can it be mended/ repaired for a few hundred    pounds or will it need a new engine

Will take it to mechanic to get verdict why it needs so much  oil.

Looked up my old  good Skoda  Octavia  technical data : it had an ALH engine... all the engines starting with 'A' are the good one I ve heard and that seems to be born out now...   Question: can I fit an ' A' engine  in the space of a ' B' engine?

Any comments wellcome

Could it be turbo or turbo seals, see if there any oil in intercooler pipes, Im not a mechanic so don't quote me on this

I honestly think the whole BXE thing is over exaggerated.

I've had 3 BXE engines now, one with 201k miles, one with 221k miles and one with 398k miles!

It's a strange thing really, but often when your buying a BXE it's an exception to the rule of buying with low miles, make sure to buy one with over 80k miles because at that point in time if the con rod hasn't come through the block it most likely never will.

I had to scrap the passat with 398k miles because the car just needed too much work over all to justify keeping it, it was NEVER looked after either, one time I smashed the sump out driving and I actually drove it with no oil for about 3 miles and it was fixed and actually lasted another year after that, but the engine and gearbox where still going strong when I got rid of it.

Currently I'm driving another passat BXE with 201k miles and so far so good.

I thought I heard before that they actually fixed the BXE after a certain year? but maybe I'm wrong, anybody else ever hear this?

Hey!

From what I know, the BLS engine replaced the BXE in late 2008 which allowed it to use a DPF as BXE's don't have that.

I have an assumption that it could be down to a production issue (from factory) as VW used something called "Fracture Splitting" which is more cost effective to make a conrod for an engine.

Mind me asking @lod1995luke when was your car made? You can find this by taking off the fusebox cover in the engine bay and there is a sticker that tells you the production date.

My Skoda Octavia MK2 BXE was made on the 22nd November 2006 so I think I might be safe as from what I read up, the issue seems to affect 2007-2008 production years.

180,000 miles on my 2008, no issues whatsoever. I think the whole BXE thing is overblown, and I don't worry about it.
