should i cancel my order?

Featured Replies

I was over the moon a few weeks ago when i ordered my Octavia VRS TDI from a local dealer.

Since then, mostly from reading content on the forum, my enthusiasm has only gone down (please dont take this as a criticism of anyone on the forum)

Firstly there was finding out about the whole MY16 debacle, and finding out my order will be built week 21 not week 22. My dealer never mentioned any of this at the time of order and has since denied any knowledge of it, claiming there will be no upgrades to my model for another year.

Secondly the horror stories of terrible ride quality, loud noises and poor quality cabins have left me feeling nothing but concerned about what i have just signed myself up for.

If i were to cancel my order now (before it is built) i think i am right in thinking i would only lose my £500 deposit, can anyone confirm this?

Are there any new owners who are pleased with their new VRS Diesal and think i would be wrong to cancel?

  • You'll hear horror stories about pretty all motor cars on their respective forums (I bet even the top quality hand built cars have problems), so I wouldn't get hung up them.   I owned my Mk1 Octavia

Thanks for all the comments.    Really put my mind at rest.    the max i have ever waited for a car is about 10 days so i think the weeks and weeks to think about it have started to mess with my h

Had mine for over 18 months now and love it. Other than an issue with rattles boot struts it's been flawless.

How was the test drive?

Are there any other cars you were considering? It's all very well cancelling, as long as you have something else lined up. I've had second thoughts over mine, but have stuck with it as I don't think I'd be better off with any of the alternatives I was considering.

The MY16/week 22 debacle is affecting other VW marques, not just Skoda so you'd need to jump outside the VW group (or wait a few weeks) to avoid that. When I drove the VRS, although the ride was firm, it certainly didn't feel any worse than the Leon or the Golf, or my current Focus for that matter.

Then of course there's joining the back of another long queue, unless you're happy with a car that's in stock.

Whether or not you lose your deposit depends on how understanding your dealer is, or if you can prove you were mis-sold the car. Any further losses depend on what you signed when you placed your order.

Don't know about your deposit but I have had my Vrs tdi for about 8mths and am very happy with it.

Road noise is a bit higher than my previous A4 but I think this partly down to increased efforts on weight saving

to maximise fuel economy.

Quality of the carpets is not as good as say Audi but its a fair bit cheaper than the comparable model.

Ride quality is ok but if I am honest a set of KW coilovers will be going on mine to improve this & sort

out the redonkulous arch gap.

hth.

Surely you test drove one before placing your order?

If so you should know what the ride quality, build quality etc are like.

All cars go through changes and that's just something you have to put up with.

If you bought an my16 spec car they would improve the spec again in another 6-12 months, so why not wait for that one? But then they might change the spec again after that so do you wait for that one?

What I'm saying is, If you were happy with the car on the test drive and we're happy to put a £500 deposit down when you placed the order then go with it. It's a cracking car no matter if it's my16 or not.

I would take a lot of what you read on here regarding complaints with a pinch of salt. I have a 1.6 s and it's been fantastic, presumably the vRS is better so you should be fine. Not sure of the my16 issue, what are the differences ?

Hi

I enjoyed the test drive, was pleased with it. Certainly felt better than my astra sri

As the weeks have passed i think i have started to doubt myself on that though.

I take all points regarding MY16, i think im just annoyed i wasnt given all the info at the time of purchase.

I've had new volkswagens with poor build. Its a chance you take with mass produced cars.

I see the diesel option concern due to regeneration etc.

this is my first skoda and the most expensive car i've ever purchased but in the two months of ownership i've been very pleased with it. My vrs ride is firm but my edn 30 golf was too. It does improve with more than just me onboard it seems.

I'd imagine if its gone to code 20, you'll lose the deposit.

Had mine for over 18 months now and love it. Other than an issue with rattles boot struts it's been flawless.

I'm also extremely please with my TDI vRS. Practicality, strong engine with good fuel economy.

I have had the boost pressure sensor replaced but as stated before that gave my a very pleasant experience I am in good hands with Skoda Switzerland dealer service.

I don't have the problem with the "boom" in the cabin. This seems to be luck of the draw with even recent cars having the problem (although it seems not as many as before so perhaps they've found some of the causes).

I have several minor rattles from the interior now (at 45k km) but overall I would say for the money its the best car I have owned (previously Ford's Focus, Mondeo Ghia & 2x Mondeo STDCi).

I have had mine for a year, apart from a couple of truly minor issues and a new wheel bearing she has been faultless.

Mass production causes issues, nothing is perfect and lasts forever, buy the car, drive it, enjoy it. Be realistic.

The most important bit.

I enjoyed the test drive, was pleased with it.

I doubt any changes or non-changes with my16 will make that much difference - you bought I the basis of testing my15 :)

Also - this site and many others like it - you'll find a higher proportion of issues reported than out in the wild as this is a place that people come to solve them, or share how they solved a problem (as well as a bit of banter, track days and meets).

I'm one of the very early adopters of the O3 and despite a few initial build quality issues, all sorted by the way with a trip to dealer plus a few bits of sticky back Velcro!... and the problems I've had with ride quality (mines an Elegance so its got Torsion Beam rear) I'm still happy with the car. As others have said on many occasions, there is not much out there that will get you as many toys or as much space for the money. If you're considering throwing £500 on a cancelled order, why not set that aside to pay for a set of Eibach springs or a set of Bilstein dampers, or both! I'm much happier with mine now I've upgraded the suspension and I understand the vRS rides much better on its IRS set up and cars built after Aug 14 supposedly have improved damping. Unless you fancy a Jaag, I'd stick with your order!

I've had mine for 4 days now and covered 250miles in my vrs diesel and I absolutely love it, drives much nicer than the vw jetta it's replacing. I love driving it in Eco mod at the moment as the drive is very smooth but when in sport it's a totally different animal!

I am concerned about this raised topic.

If you have ordered a Diesel vRS you must have driven one and know what you are in for.

As with TripAdvisor, ignore the miserable and over enthusiastic and look at the middle ground.

Got a Diesel vRS Estate with 5K on the clock and it just gets better and better.

This is our second Octavia estate and I have only just discovered the tipping at the back of variable flooring!

More power than our Fabia Mk 1 vRS, but I drive it more sensibly.

For the money IMO there is nothing to touch it.

Hence I bought one!

Every car forum is full of horror stories, nature of the beast. I've had my Octy VRS for 8 weeks, best car I have ever bought.

All good things come to those who wait. I waited 6 months, but I already had a mk2 Octy, that replaced the one I had before....

Had my vrs diesel 8 months and done 30k. Had no problems and find it a big comfy car

If you don't think the Octy is for you then cancel. Before you do though, read Honest John' advice column. Problems with every model and type of car. Yes there have been a couple of niggles with some of the Octy's. A good dealer will sort any initial problems.

My friend I think what you are experiencing is called cognitive dissonance ! The thought process we all go through when making a big purchase. I went through it too when I ordered mine and very nearly cancelled and went for a 3 series.

I'm so glad I didn't now as the vRS rocks, 3 series BMs are ten a penny. I found the vRS was the only one to have the whole package in terms of what I was looking for, but your needs may be different from mine!

All I can say is I read a lot on this forum whilst waiting for my order and nearly cancelled but glad I didn't. I thought about the dpf factor, the road noise, plastic cabin but in my opinion the last two are fine as it's well put together. Dpf has been fine on mine. But like i said only you can make the decision!

You don't have to cancel to get what you want, you simply need to tell the Dealership Principle you were not told of the MY16 and the Sales Person told you "there will be no upgrades to my model for another year" a case for Trading Standards if necessary.

This in itself is mis-selling or mis-representation of the facts however, other than re-ordering you another car with your options with the assoicated delay I don't think they can offer you anything else.

If the car does exhibit the boom or rough ride simple drive it back onto their forecourt and ask for your trade-in back as its the quality which was demonstrated to you on the test drive hasn't arrived in your car.

All of the above means waiting or being willing to wait longer, can you ?

I didn't test drive before ordering...

I don't think I test drove the fabia either.

Tbh I'd rather have the dedicated satnav being offered free at the moment than the smart link as I don't own a trendy new phone. I don't think the my16 changes to the octavia would make me want to cancel. The golf gtd though, haven't they added keyless entry to the 2016 spec? I might have had to reorder...

You'll hear horror stories about pretty all motor cars on their respective forums (I bet even the top quality hand built cars have problems), so I wouldn't get hung up them.

I owned my Mk1 Octavia VRS for 11 years, they had problems from the off but I can honestly say it was the best car I have ever owned, and because I was so impressed by it I bought the Mk3 VRS.

I've had mine a month (TSI), it doesn't seem to be afflicted with the cabin boom (I did 400 miles in the first 24hrs), I think the build is on par if not better than most other makes and definitely better than a friends Focus ST, and the ride certainly is!

I had the same doubts as you the longer I waited for the car to arrive, now I have it all those thoughts are a distant memory.

Thing is with forums the negatives always seem to stick, very few start with "I'm delighted with my new purchase, who else", or people extolling the virtues of the fantastic car they have just bought or run for the last 12 months.

The only reason people know of the model year changes is due to the forum. Outside of the forum most people would be none the wiser, I have no issues with ride quality especially on the 19" wheels its certainly no worse than the MK2 vrs it replaced. So far build quality wise everything has been fine, I do have an issue currently but the part has been ordered and will be booked in with no issues.

Had my vrs diesel for a month now. 2k on the clock and it's better than I had hoped. The ride is firm, and at slow speeds can be less than smooth but it's great at speed and the car handles brilliantly. Stick with it, im sure you will like it
