MPG Challenge

Featured Replies

I was prety astounded the other day when the trip computer told me that 'Since Start' my MPG was 78.7MPG   ( i had never got better than 42mpg out of my previous petrol 1.6 Focus)

Picture taken on my driveway, whilst stationary.

Journey was about 1/2 hr Motorway with traffic limiting to 55-60mph  1.6 D Elegance.

I wonder if you can do better?

Post photos as proof (no Photoshop as you would be only kidding yourself) and obviously only photograph your trip computer whist not moving and if it is safe to do so.

That is what the computer says.

So is that what you get from the car if you fill the Tank and drive 787 miles will it only take 45.46 litres to refill the tank?

Best I've had is 53MPG from the CR VRS. Amazingly the computer is very accurate, my Fabia VRS constantly lied about MPG  :D

I travel a regular 230 mile trip South, then back a fortnight later for a fortnight and so far my Octavia 1 1.9TD is returning 55mpg, about half of the journey on A41 and A34 with many roundabouts and villages on the A41, and a half on motorways @ 72 - 75mph when able.

The computer tells me 58mpg on each trip, but brim to brim filling and sat nav speeds and mileage verify a regular 55mpg for the journey. so the computer is a little optimistic ... :)

Alan.

4 hours of motorways, A roads, and many roundabouts (A43). Not bad for a Diesel VRS, I will post the big screen for the other stats (average speed is low because of M1 50 zone) I don't drive at 60 :)

It niggles at me that you cannot change the colour of the car on the screen

Managed 61mpg in my old mk2 vrs CR (30 mile motorway journey). So far managed a max of 42mpg in my mk3 vrs TSI (same journey). It's a lot more fun though!!

Managed a miraculous 80.3 which I believe is more than what skoda claim would post proof but not sure how to do photos on here

Does it change the shape if you own an estate though?

Yep. Mine show an Estate.

The best I've managed so far going by brim to brim calculations is 49mpg and that was Cheshire and back, upward journey head on into a prevailing headwind. For an old 1.4 petrol Roomy,i consider that pretty damn good especially since i wasn't exactly light on the loud pedal.

Phew! My order is saved!

I find it perfect for my white motors :D

Yep. Mine show an Estate.

It also "crashes" into the pump once you get to zero miles left......

63mpg from mine on a long trip with lots of 50 mph restrictions. This week lots of A roads back from Birmingham and still returned 57mpg . Excellent when you thing it's 2.0 and dsg.

55.39 from my 1.4, all in light traffic city driving with A/C.

Thats about normal for that sort of speed. It'll soon drop if you do a lot of 70 plus though.

Long term 45mpg, because I drive mine like I stole it, even though it's mine, but you get the picture.....

Im just happy its better than the 23mpg I used to get out of my mk2...

That is good but I bet your average speed was less than 50 kph.

Obviously we tsi owners will never match a diesel which is more efficient and the fuel has 10% more energy than an equivalent volume of petrol.

All other things being equal (and they never are) consumption is related to speed.

Peugeot have set a couple of records recently with the 308 on a closed circuit with both diesel and petrol and the comparisons are interesting.

Petrol was 2.85l/100 (99.1 mpg) at 56kph average. A consumption optimised Diesel version got 2l/100 (141.2 mpg) at near identical (pedestrian) speed.

At a 20 deg Centigrade ambient temperature I'll get 3.7l/100 (76mpg) at around 60kph, 4.7l/100 (60mpg) at 90kph and 5.7l/100 (49.5mpg) at 110kph. Pretty well identical to the official figures for the manual 1.4tsi Golf and consistent with what you and GTR27 are achieving.

For the first 160km of my most recent fill up I was getting 58mpg :) but my wife has just gone shopping with it :(

I still have problems with hesitation after the first cold start that I know is affecting consumption until warmed up and judging by a faint whistling sound that seems to come from under the bonnet on overrun I may have a small 'air-leak'. SO some improvement may be possible if I can get these fixed.

for the size and performance of the car you really cannot complain though.

First 500km with mine and I am getting 45mpg (6,5l/100km) average. Quite satisfied as the engine needs to run in :)

I don't have any pictures but I managed 65mpg on a return trip from Exeter a few weeks ago. About 50 miles on the A38 with a few small 50mph sections, I was using the cruise control and desperately trying to eek out all the efficiency I could from it by coasting down hills using the 'ECO' mode on the DSG box (equivalent to dipping the clutch on a manual).

I was reasonably suprisesd by this economy, but failed to get close to it on my trip to Dublin and back last week, for the whole journey I only managed 48mpg and the best 'since start' I had on the long run was 51mpg!

Not bad I thought for the 2.0TDI estate.

If you leave the clutch engaged going down hill you will get slightly better fuel economy.

With the clutch engaged & no accelerator or cruise control input you will use no fuel at all.

If you dip the clutch you need to use fuel to keep the engine idling & running the accessories.

The difference is arguably not much but will still be a benefit.

That doesnt work well with my car. It brakes too much in gear to maintain speed. When coasting out of gear it just keeps going.

The best I have managed to get out of my diesel vRS is 36mpg........ The worst was 65.7 mpg  :D
