EU6 in September

Featured Replies

Has any one got any thoughts on the EU6 compliance rules as from September.  VW/Skoda as far as I am aware are going to use a substance AdBlue held in a 25Ltr tank were one and half litres will last 600 miles. It is squirted into the exhaust system when the engine is running.  If it runs out the engine will go limp home mode and will not restart if stopped.  It looks complicated a pain in the butt.  I was thinking of changing in September but am now having second thoughts.  Inaddition Skoda has nocars to test drive for 2 months.  Cant' beat a good plan

Interesting, do you have a source for that rumour?

That is just how things are going, you will have this sometime in the future, buy some other manufacturers Euro 6 Diesels,

or go petrol, hydrogen, electric or what ever.

Or stick with buying older cars as long as they are still available.

A dealer told me the same last week. He didn't sound impressed!

Works out at about 0.25p per mile which would be less than a 0.5% change to my motoring costs.

Citroen have something like this in one of their engines, it was remarked upon in a recent long term test in CAR magazine. They were not impressed, not so much by any cost concerns but it's something else to trigger a time for service warning. Or not.

AdBlue has been around a good while.  Lorries started using it about 5 years ago I think, and several other car makers have used it for a while too I think.  Its p***.  No literally, its p***.  It's a solution of urea

According to the January 2015 brochure the Scout diesel engines are already EU6 compliant. Is this another mistake, or do they require diesel exhaust fluid?

So if you run out, can you just **** in the tank?  :D

so are the vrs,was told about this when the mk3 was launched and that the vrs would have it as it was eu6 complient(at the time anyway, things change though)but there was no mention of it when I picked the car up march last year

All car manufacturers are going down the same route to reduce NOx emissions.

The tank us a urea tank and it sprays urea into the hot end of the exhaust system to neutralise the NOx.

This will become standard on all cars. Already being supplied to meet USA NAS specs

Not a new invention - manufacturers have either used exhaust gas recirculation or ad blue to achieve previous Euro standards. Euro 6 is obviously more stringent than Euro 5 and the only way most manufacturers are achieving both performance and emissions targets is to use both systems.

Previous Volvo had urea system fitted. Ford, Peugeot, Citroen all used the same engine but urea refill cost £90 in Volvo dealership but only £45 in Peugeot.

That would be yet another mistake in the brochure then. The UK April 2015 brochure says the 184PS vRS diesel is EU5.

According to this:

The ever-popular ŠKODA Yeti in 2.0-litre TDI 110bhp & 150bhp guise are the first models in the ŠKODA range to benefit from AdBlue® technology, which drastically reduce NOx nitrogen oxide emissions to close to zero, in addition these engines have reduced both CO2 and fuel consumption, the 110bhp by 12% (4.5 l/100km on combined cycle).

Scout is Euro6 but does not have Adblue.

This sounds like a great reason to buy petrol or hybrid. Diesels are already 30-50kg heavier than petrol, and adding 25l/25kg of fluid will only hit handling and performance (and possibly luggage space) further.

Credit for reducing NO2, but there must be a better way of doing it. When that something comes along, nobody will want a used AdBlue pee-guzzler. I think small capacity petrol-turbo or hybrid-petrol-turbo are the way to go for no-hassle economy seekers and mile-munchers.

The 184ps TDI is EU6 compliant...in the Golf GTD at least. Doesnt use Adblue either.

Adblue will start being added I guess to further reduce NOx outputs but as it stands a number of EU6 compliant cars dont have it. The 125 and 150 TDI Passat Mk8's dont for example.

The Yeti's probably got it because they are as aerodynamic as a brick and a straightforward solution to further reducing CO2 and NOx emissions to more acceptable levels for those types of car...I guess same goes for big vehicles like the VW Sharan.

I have my suspicions that the 184 TDI will be retired for the 190 SCR equipped version in due course but thats just a guess.

Sounds like the engines are very close to the limits for EU6, so some will need this to be compliant and others won't.

The 184 ps TDI is EU6 on Octavias as well.

Slightly off topic but I think the new Land Rover Evoque is a 9 speed auto

Yes, both the Evoque and the Discovery Sport use the transverse ZF 9HP 45 auto boxes 9 speed, also used by Chrysler, BMW & Jeep

And the 1.8 and 2.0 tsi if I recall correctly.

Given the 150ps engine is the same aside from the injectors and map I don't understand how the 150ps isn't also Euro6 also... Obviously all of us with 150ps engines need to remap them to do our bit for the environment? :)
