Isn't cruise control great

Featured Replies

:D

Just love it. Like being able to speed up/down on the stalk - never knew they did that. After eighteen months of having a cruise stalk its finally working - thanks I believe, to the fact my car's insides are vRS.

Took my interior wiring loom out the PD100, for K to cannibalise the cruise loom fitted SO long ago (was funny to see him battling with it to get all the wires he needed, :D - I'd forgotten all the gear was in it after the conversion, and nearly sold the whole loom. :o But now, a quick reinstall and it worked 2nd time of trying - bloody thing had to have the battery disconnected to get it to read it.:rofl:

So now I'm hoping for a slightly better mpg on my home Sunday night - It did pretty well coming back to Leicester down the A49?/M1/A46.

Only trouble with cruise is that it uses WOT to get back up to speed, which can kill economy, especially if you live in a hilly area :(

I gave up on it as I found when I was travelling, I spent all my time accelerating to overtaking the car in front, but I might use it if there's no other traffic around

It doesn't in my octavia.

If you start accellerating hard then hit the resume button it will continue using a similar amount of throttle to get you up to speed , but if you are driving at a steady 50 then press resume to get back up to 75 for example it will accellerate more gently than you could do by pressing the throttle yourself

I tend to do the resuming myself and flick it back on when I'm at or near my cruise speed.

Wots :P 'WOT' in this context please ?

Must admit the one thing I do is to accelerate to the target speed and hit 'set' rather than hitting resume. Once I had it set to a speed that shouldn't be used outside private roads and hit resume - it went off towards that goal pretty rapidly at which point I had to slam the brakes on, didnt want more points ;)

Wide Open Throttle

Wide Open Throttle

Which probably doesn't apply to a throttle-less diesel engine :o Still, you know what I mean :D

I've had cruise on a few cars and they have always made mpg worse. Not by enough to stop me using it cos I think cruise is wonderful but I have never improved economy with it thanks mostly to the resume button.I always do that bit myself and then set it again.

Doh - should have guessed that :D Tnx

Sam - if you want to stick to the same speed just accelerate back to close to the speed you were at before, then use resume - best of both worlds.

What do people do when coming off cruise? Do you use the stalk, or dab the brakes? I tend to go for the brakes, because I find the cancel the least ergonomic function on the stalk and it's the one you always want in a hurry (bad bit of design there) but I'm conscious that I'm showing brakelights to the person behind, for no reason...

I tap the brakes , but it's only a very brief flash and a bit of indication to any cars behind that you will be slowing isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I nudge the slider towards the off position, but not so far that it clicks.

Just kick the clutch down and let it come up, same effect without flashing the brake lights ;)

Just don't turn it on you lazy so and so's :D

I accelerate back to where I want it and set...I do adjust it up and down on the stalk, but try not do downwards, unless I'm been annoyed.

Cancel with a flick of a touch on the brakes, again if I'm slowing might aswell warn the guys behind because I'll gear slow after that unless I have to brake or some twonk nicks my sapce being a smart bottom.

But I will occasionally find myself not cancelling, instead trying to time the move back with the car ahead...leaves me a bit close somtimes but keeps you awake...

Yep it's tempting to play brinkman ... :D

Concensus seems to be brakes. I'll stick with my current method (well I would have anyway - I was interested in others' methods). Thanks.

I flick the switch to temporarily deselect cruise and then select Resume when I have accelerated back to the preset speed - all in the interests of smoother driving. :)

Just love it.....up/down on the stalk

Is everybody's stalk (no s******ing at the back please) the same? On mine the deselect involves pushing the switch on the front of the stalk towards the steering column. This requires grasping the stalk (stop it!) to steady it otherwise the stalk just flips into high beam due to the stiffness of the switch, i.e. taking hand right off the steering wheel and feeling for the switch - takes almost as long to do as writing .... oops!

My old F**d had much better controls - on the front of the steering wheel

Makes me laugh when you engage cruise as accelerating hard - it seems to set at your final speed, rather than the speed you're doing as you press the button.

To disengage, half slide the switch off, it'll retain it's settings but not light up the brakes or damage the clutch.

I agree with Nick. I just tap the brakes as to deselect it is a pain (or me being lazy) Also I never turn my cruise off. Its always on.

Thats what I do too :)

To clarify, I KNOW HOW THE SWITCH WORKS, I just find it unergonomic to use the deselect function.

Thanks

There's a deselect function? Must have a closer look - I thought it was just set & resume, which did that and also did the throttle slow/fast adjustment.

Tsk! :D

Button on end - set (when no speed set) and decrease

Button on front - push towards steering column to deselect, push further until it clicks to turn off cruise altogether. Pull away from steering column to resume, and to increase speed. As with my old F**d, individual presses of the + and - result in 1mph increments. Press and hold for continuous acceleration/deceleration.
