Thoughts of my vRS TDI after one week of ownership

Featured Replies

First and foremost, loving the car, I'm over the moon with it.

I'm averaging 43mpg in "normal" mode, but to be fair, i'm not really pootling around and my right foot is quite heavy! I've put in in vRS mode once, the only difference I noted (the only one that matters?) is that the throttle was much more responsive.

Of the niggles (there aren't many) ...

1) the aircon isn't ice cold. On maximum speed, it's certainly cold, but not freezing, whereas some of my previous cars i've had to turn it down.

2) The sat nav (Amundsen) is probably the least user friendly i've used and just isn't easy to read (comparing to tomtom's, google maps etc)

3) Still don't really get what difference having the Mitsumi connectivity makes? Other than charging the iphone?

May sound like i'm moaning about nothing, but I have to stress, these are very, very minor things. I'm extremely happy about everything else. In fact, i've been stopped twice by other motorists (once in a petrol station, and once in a car park) by people asking about the car, what model it is and if i'm happy with it. I've never experienced this before with any car i've owned, so that in itself must mean the car is pretty special!

I know it's a broad statement, but this is quite possibly, the best car i've owned to date!

The mitsumi I think really just allow full ipod control I may be wrong but I don't think that it adds any extra phone functionality

You're right about the throttle response in the different modes. All the modes do is change the responsiveness, not the power.

Can't help you on the other issues though, sorry!

Good to hear you are enjoying the car :)

I tried mine in Eco mode on a recent tip down the A1. Throttle responce Nil, power with foot to floor Nil, experience of overtaking Nil,

Mine seems to be stuck in Sport Mode.

I'm putting off leaving it in sport mode as I know if I leave it in that mode, it'll stay in that mode!

Bit of a waste of time really, almost wish I never bothered - I can do everything I want with regards to music over bluetooth anyway.. maybe there's a slight increase in the quality?

I tried Eco once, didn't like it. Mine has been in Sports mode pretty much since new. I think it increases throttle response and tightens up the steering, or maybe it's just psychological, either way I prefer it in Sports mode!! I agree with the air-con, could do with being a little cooler. You don't say if it is a brand new car. If it is MPGs should increase once you have a few miles on it. Mine is averaging about 47 and I'm not particularly gentle with it, and I'm DSG.

23.5k miles in mine and still loving it.

mIne seems to be stuck in sport mode too

Mine stays in sport mode too.

It's skoda idea of a sporty version of the octavia so it deserves to stay in sport mode.

I personally find my mpg is better in sport mode than it is in Eco or normal

Sorry, forgot to add its brand new!

I pretty quickly ended up with mine in "Individual" mode, with the steering on "Sport" and the engine on "Normal", which seems to give plenty of performance without being too twitchy under the throttle.  I've tried other steering modes and find that for me they feel a bit light and less precise - I really like the tight precision that "sport" mode gives.

The other settings seem a bit pointless to me and so I haven't really explored them to see which I prefer.

I like the adaptive lighting in sport mode. Seeing the headlights turn as I turn the wheel is impressive.

I thought it would be a gimmick but now when I drive a car with 'normal' headlights I can just how much of a massive difference it makes.

That only works in sport mode does it? Or do you just notice it more as you're driving it a bit harder? :)

TBH I'm not entirely sure.

I've read that it doesn't work in Eco mode.

I think in normal they still turn but at a slower rate so they're not as responsive.

In sport mode they react to and match your steering input, ie they turn as quick as you turn the wheel.

It's very impressive and it's not until I drove a car without it that I realised how much better it lights up the roads for you.

Think it works in any mode but the lights have to be in " Auto "

Its disabled in Eco mode.

Its disabled in Eco mode.

Why..

cant see how this would save lots of energy, or is it that people who drive in Eco mode are highly unlikely to go faster than 20mph and therefore do not need the enhanced protection that adaptive lighting affords.

BTW in the Yeti it works all the time - not just when lights are on Auto...

Agreed: air con is PAP! No good. So your telling me (my16 vrs estate) that if i put her in sport and auto lights the lights will be adaptive to my steering?! Cool!

Only with the light switch in Auto

Disclaimer: -  I think

The adaptive lights swivel quicker in sport mode than normal mode.

Eco mode ? Whats that ?

With the air con, also worth checking its setting, by pressing 'Setup' on Climate Control, that it is set to 'Strong'.

Really enjoying mine too albeit after 3 weeks of ownership and 750 miles on the clock! I use individual mode now as the constant stiffer steering made my arms ache after a while, I only have a small amount of straight roads near me so constantly turning :-) and with this mode I still have the "geek" button illuminated with the bright yellow vRS logo due to engine set to sport and adaptive lighting the same :-)

+1 on the air con, it can be increased to strong and you should notice the difference. I would suggest mcscoobs that you just have a play with things which I'm sure you will and you will continue to learn about your car and find stuff that you maybe never knew it had or didn't quite understand what it does etc, enjoy!

Wait until its dark and leave switch in auto and fire the car up and watch your headlights self level, it's funny as it nearly goes cross-eyed!

Ahh yes, the headlight dance.

I turned the car off and restarted it twice the first time I noticed that.

I didn't know what was happening!!

Thanks all, i'll have a play with the aircon settings. Only just figured out the auto window closing on locking the car remotely, love finding out little things like this! It's a shame I can't open the boot from the inside though... still, can't have everything!

I'm now averaging 47mpg and i'm barely cruising along... i'm over the moon with that level of fuel consumption
