Remaps ought (legally speaking) to not worsen emissions, but in practice this isn't policed with regard to NOx, so they needn't keep exhaust aftertreatment systems optimised, which native mapping has to. (With the obvious exception of 'dieselgate' diesels).

That probably means mapped petrol engines can be run much leaner on cruise, saving fuel but upping NOx output.

Hi guys, new here and new owner of a 272. Sorry if there is a specific 272 thread rather than this 280 one. Car is great in every respect so far except….mpg. Now I knew it wouldn’t be great, but a lot of what I’ve read on this forum says I should get maybe 25 around town and 35 on a run, if not more. I seem to be getting 20 around town and no more than 27 on a run. Was just wondering if you guys had any thoughts on anything that might be up with it?

Heavy right foot?😉. Excess use of Sport mode or manual / paddle changes? I run mine in D mode 95% of the time & S mode only when needed or to get engine braking when approaching red lights or roundabouts.

What fuel & you putting in it? I only use 99 Ron Momentum from Tesco where possible. Mine is also a 6 speed so 7 speeders should get better mpg on a run or on the motorway. 

Others on here may have some extra ideas.

Been rolling around in E most of the time, but actually finding the coasting annoying so may move more to D. I’ve been driving it so chill at the moment, so really not sure why it seems to be doing so much less mpg than others on here.

E mode is pretty pointless on a 272 / 280 &, as you say, the coasting is really annoying. 

99Ron fuel does make a difference (more power) & smoother running.

I have Start Stop turned off as well.

So welcome to Briskoda and to the 272/280 thread, rcblur69. 
You didn’t say how long your commute is, but if I take the start-up average on my massive 2.5m each way commute, I get about 22mpg first thing (06.00) and about 23, maybe 24mpg back at (08.30). My long term is still showing about 28.5 but that’s because I did a 1k round trip to Ireland about 6 weeks ago which got my long-term avg upto 35. Cold engines use more fuel and when it’s winter I get 20-21 there and back. 
So given this I’d say what you’re getting isn’t off, it’s in the about right arena; if this was a V6 or worse, a V8 developing 280’ish bhp, you’d be looking up the noisy exhaust at 15mpg or even less.

20 around town is about right if the town is like London with lots of 20/30 limit and traffic. Even stop start won't make it any better ... 

 

27 on a run (assuming definition is same as me.) Sounds low. I'd expect more than 30 in a 272. You must be ragging it,😂

This mornings commute. The ‘runs’ it’s been on so far are 50/60 wide open country roads with a bit of 70 A1 thrown in. I’m yet to take it on an extended motorway run. But given plenty of people are getting high 30s on longer runs, mine feels a fair way off.

It had a new cat before I bought it and the mot history showed some emissions issues. I’m wondering if an O2 sensor may still be not right or something, but wouldn’t this throw something on the dash?

Sounds suspicious. New cat at such low mileage & emissions issues? Might be worth having a diagnostic done on it to see if there are any hidden / historical faults.

Yea think you’re right, likely gonna have to get it done not where I bought it to make sure it’s legit. Any value in getting that done at skoda, rather than just a local general garage?

I'd go independent Skoda, VW, Sear, Audi specialist. Worth seeking one out local to you. If you let us know where you are located others here may be able to make some suggestions. E.g. I use https://www.inde-tech.co.uk/ for my general servicing.

Has the car been mapped before you purchased it or is it running standard. 
move seen poor maps absolutely tanking fuel consumption.

Not that I’m aware of, but I suppose a diagnostic check would flag that up?

Yup I have a 3 mile commute and get around 22mpg ..... Couple of weeks ago had a trip to Wales and managed 42 which is the best so far.

This one seems to’ve had similar issues looking at the MOT’s.

If your commute is only around 4 miles I’d say that’s probably about right. My 280 gets around 28-34 on a 28 mile work commute (mostly motorway) depending on how heavy my foot is (with a DTUK pedal box in sport plus mode but no remap) but if I do the school run (2-3 miles tops) no matter how gently it’ll be well under 20mpg every time. Down to the local towns (I live rural 10 miles from everywhere) I get between 27-30 on average round trips and seem to be averaging 27.4 mostly long term. That’s with “enjoying” the power using D, S and manual modes mixed on mostly Sainsbury’s 97 octane with occasional Tesco 99 thrown in. Last year when the financial crisis hit I drove it like a grandad for about 4K miles and got the averages up to around 32 but my god was it a boring way to drive it!

So took the car for an emissions test, given this is what it was failing before and it sailed through. So guess it can’t be throwing more fuel in than it should be or it would have failed. 
Think I’m gonna chill out a bit and use it a bit more, see what happens.

@rcblur69  You probably know that you need to do some longer runs, taking account of driving style, traffic and seasonal conditions. Your commute is much too short to evaluate a true mpg figure and your engine is barely warm. My commute takes 15-20 minutes to do 10 miles on A roads at 50-60 mph with 1 roundabout to stop at only if the lights are red.  The engine oil usually takes 8 miles to reach  80c temperature.  I see 30-32 mpg in winter and 35-38 mpg in summer with 40-43 mpg on long motorway runs, cruising at a true 70 mph, as long as there aren't too many delays caused by accidents etc. My 272 uses a little more fuel than my previous TFSI & TSI ranging from 200 to 300 BHP. I think they offer fantastic economy for the performance.

Little update on this issue. Did a test drive in a 280 today and then did the same route in my car. My car got 23 mpg and the 280 got 28.5, so something is fishy.

Used an OBD reader to monitor boost pressure and noticed it peak at over 1.5 bar, so pretty certain this car has been mapped, and likely badly.

It’s going to be given back me thinks…

Just as a comparison, I'm running 480bhp in 280 and i get 19-20 mpg around town and between 20-28 mpg on the motorway depending on my foot!

Yearly oil change / inspection coming up. I just hope it doesn't mushroom into another expensive one like last year - replacement water pump / thermostat & new discs & pads 🤞
