Pretty sure same gearbox maybe different final drive ratio

Sent from my E6653 using Tapatalk

I thought that too, but it seems that there are 2 different final drive ratios in a DSG, one for each output shaft,

so just changing the final drive gearing is not as simple as in a more conventional transmission.

I don't think that Skoda publish gear ratios in the consumer literature, but SEAT do so, maybe it's possible to find a Leon brochure

somewhere & see what ratios the 280 Cupra uses?

I posted somewhere what RPM cars doing at 60 / 70 ? Cant remember.... Was it for you Dave ? May help ?

Hi Nick, you did but I can't find it....

When I get released from Jury Duty I'll have time for a proper search.

“The Skoda Superb is one of our favourite compact executive cars”.

Compact???! What planet do they live on? I say the BMW 3 and A4 are certainly ‘compact’, especially in this skewed comparison, which is why it's an apples and oranges nonsense comparison test.

High performance E-class and 5 Series are much closer comparables – except in price, of course.

Agreed... Crap review ..

From WhatCar?... Shock, horror. I've always found them awful. Even AutoExpress is better! Evo gave the Superb a great review, and I tend to trust them more. So did practically everyone else to be fair! The longer German reviewers Autogefühl and Ausfahrt on YouTube are always decent, and they have ~45 minute Superb reviews if anyone is so inclined.

They missed the whole point of the 280.  The reason for buying one is to get away from the run-of-the-mill standard diesel and to have a bit of fun and not worry too much about economy etc - most will buy and hold for a long time to be fair so residuals are not number one on the list of priorities.  If you are doing serious mileage then yes you will most likely go for a diesel and change regularly etc but the 280 is a bit more special than that.

I agree.....Whatcar can come to some strange conclusions with some of their reviews!  I do like the German reviews as well.  A little long but very thorough and well researched....then again they are German :)

Should it really?

Space wise I agree, but for build quality, engine and equipment choices, it goes right next to Passat, Mondeo, 508, C5 etc.. which do not compare to 5 series obviously.

Well, again, that depends on personal perception, I guess.

Actually, I make the closest comparable the A6 Avant S line 3.0 TDI Quattro S tronic.

A quick run through the Audi configurator – endlessly long as it is – put the list price 15k over my L&K before I even finished trying to match spec.

But of course no car ‘journalist’ or publication would ever dare to run such a comparison; an intra-group comparison of ‘mainstream’ vs. ‘premium’ products.

Indeed, if you’ve ever seen the car ‘journalist' / car industry relationship from inside the industry, or even just observed journalists invited to a car launch event (in Europe typically at a luxury resort hotel in Spain) and their subsequent writing, you might come to the same conclusion as me: the closest comparable profession is prostitution. Could any journalist who does not tow the line ever expect another invitation to one of these lovely events?

As for German reviewers: well, I don’t know about these new online / YouTube-based people and what pays their bills. But the German car magazines are even worse as they’re totally in the pockets of the (obviously) very powerful domestic car industry.

So I don’t know why I even expressed surprise at this nonsense review.

I just looked looked at the BMW M-Sport and it got to over £45k to try and spec it to L&K 280 spec, that did give it LED Headlights, however it didn't give it 4x4 or the room inside that the 280 L&K has!

I turned down many iterations of 3 Series (high spec) and 5 Series (lower spec) in favour of my Superb. A4 wasn't available due to re-launch and don't like the A6.

Does anyone know when the sportline comes or is coming?

Week 22 onwards

Lower spec superbs compete with mondeos passets mazda 6 etc and win all the group tests, badge doesnt seem to matter at the 20/25k mark,up the spec/price my 280 L&K was knocking on 36k,the mood changes,no matter how great the superb is,no matter how roomy, well equipped, the looks, the finish, the all wheel drive, the speed of it,i could go on,it wouldnt be a test winner against the bm/audi/merc brigade for one reason and one reason only, its a skoda, the badge!! How dare skoda sell a car at that price level,be that costly to run, well let me tell you,ive had a 5 series 520d,so boring,so badly equipped, ive had an audi A8,nearly bankrupt me when it went wrong, mercs do nothing for me styling wise,i bought, for me the best car there was at the money, and im bloody pleased i did, couldnt care less what motoring mags/people say,i know i bought right,i love the bloody thing!! Kevin.

I bought my Superb after having three E class Mercs, all were S/H could not afford to by new with the spec I require.

All three took me ages to track down as most E classes are very basic.

The second one I had was fully loaded, air suspension, dynamic seats, everything you could get and I had an original sales invoice for £52,000 ! and this was in 2004!

To buy one now with the spec that my Superb has would be nearly the same.

After three months and 2000 miles I think the Superb is an equal and in some respects a better car than the E class.

Also Mercedes do not offer a medium/high performance petrol version, you either have the tame 250 or the nut job AMG!

Would like it to be 50mm wider in the back though!!

Its the lack of black leather that puts me off the LK

Last time I check materials in merc C class were several level better than rubbish plastics in skoda, thats why I wouldnt draw comparison in pricing like that. Thats why superb should be compared to Passat and Mondeo not E Class.

“Several levels”? Really? In some areas I grant you, yes. For instance, Mercedes carpets and mats last forever, Skoda ones don’t. And Harman Kardon beats Canton. But, having had 7 Mercedes – 5 of which E-class – I just don’t see anything like the extra £15000 (or more)! Especially when you consider it costs twice as much to service a Mercedes than  a Skoda.

Edited by eurotraveller

Someone who can afford premium brand hardly thinks about Skoda. So 15000 difference doesnt matter. Why dont you just compare it Passat?

It so happens I can afford ‘premium’ quite easily, but still chose Skoda. So I do make that comparison. It’s the satisfaction of feeling like getting value for money and – just as importantly – of not having been taken to the cleaners.

I only have to walk into a Merc showroom to get that sense of an attempt at being taken for a fool. Even my wife, who still has a Merc and is a Merc 'lover', is beginning to come 'round and see my point - especially given the so glaringly obvious strengths of the new Superb.

Audi A4 saloon - my brother owns one, his third. Nice quality feel, but it rattles, as did the previous two. (Effectively a "company car" so he just accepts the rattle, but then again he does own the company)

Mercedes C220 saloon - my sister-in-law owns one. God is that a cramped interior and when sat in the back my head is constantly on the roof and at 5' 11" I'm not exactly tall.

Mercedes E350 estate - a friend owns one. I was actually considering getting one until I priced up a saloon and it came to over £10,000 more (after discount) than the L&K Superb. That's 10k+ for vibrating seats, the only option the Superb didn't have.

BMW 530 estate - a friend owns one. The problems he's had with it - tailgate window randomly opening, fog lights coming on when not switched on, the "fantastic" iDrive system regularly not working. Great performance and handling, but I can never get comfortable in it.

VW Passat estate - a friend owns one. Never been in it. He likes it but also describes it as a boring car. Personally I really dislike the venetian blind grill of the current VW range.

Skoda Superb 280 hatchback - I own one. Now why is it that whenever we travel anywhere, all the above always ask if we can go in my car?
