Great fun and absurdly fast is Auto Express verdict. Although they do add that all of this is unneccessary in a car of this type.

I guess the author just doen´t like a family car with a "sports engine" in it.

I always take their reviews with a bucket of salt. It did raise a wry eyebrow when they bemoaned the 164g CO2/km as being 'out of character' with a family car. Say what now? Many OEMs diesels throw out more than that, and we're discussing a ~300hp turbo petrol?! I can't help but be cynical and think if it was a diesel of similar power/speed, they'd be championing its 'astonishingly low emissions'....

I don't think that these people understand that these days a diesel is not cost effective for low mileage users like myself!

Not sure how you can bring cost effectiveness into this when you have bought a 280  :notme:

I only do 3/4k miles a year Gizmo so I would just be opening up myself to EGR/DPF issues so for me it had to be petrol so why not the 280, its complete overkill but so what lol ;)

I wasn’t knocking your choice at all, but the 280 must be the most expensive to own once depreciation has been included, no matter how few miles you do.

My mileage unfortunately meant it had to be a diesel, yes I know the 1.4 is very economical but it would be too underpowered FOR ME (I felt the 190 was still underpowered  :D  )

If I was doing less than 10K PA then a 280 would have been seriously considered.

I didn't take it as a "knock" mate, I'd originally ordered the 220 but the lure of the 280 was an itch that I kept scratching and in the end I couldn't stand the itch anymore so changed my order.

I go to Germany most years so it will be nice to try the 280 out.

I'm currently reading the manual in the Škoda app. Apparently fuel consumption increases by 50% when driving above 3/4 of maximum speed. So, from the horse's mouth... If you care about economy and/or the planet, drive everywhere at 120mph. :D

Think you have read that the wrong way:

“fuel consumption increases by 50%" = you will use 50% MORE fuel.

Erm... exactly. So with a max speed of 155mph you will (tongue in cheek, reverse engineering the comment) use half the fuel by driving at 120mph instead, ie 3/4 of max speed.

Whoosh parrot for Gizmo please! ;)

I've put 15K miles on my Superb in the 3 years I've owned it, so maybe I'm the ideal customer for another petrol version.

If I can find a decent deal out there, I hope to join this exclusive club later this year.

Even sillier, I'm trying to convince SWMBO that a low mileage Superb Elegance is a suitable replacement for her Octy vRS  so that I can keep it in the

family.

Wish me luck!

I put nearly 100k on my 170 TDI in 4 years; please tell me 280 petrol makes sense  :D

OK, so maybe I'm expecting to do somewhat fewer miles than in the past...

If it doesnt meet your expectations, you can always swap it for S class :D

Based on average MPGs for both engines on a run (I imagine 25k a year is mostly 'on a run') you'd be looking at about £15 a week extra in fuel for the 280. If you were really really careful in the 170TDI and a bit footloose in the 280 you might be closer to £20 a week. I'm basing that on 35mpg versus 55mpg btw, when I know the 220 will actually give into the 40s easily (I've done it) so the 280 can't be that much worse once settled to a cruising speed. If you believe some posts on here, the diesels are closer to 40/45mpg on a run and the petrol isn't far behind, making it even less significant.

Is a measly fifteen to twenty quid worth it to drive a smooth, revvy, 4x4 barge that is guaranteed to make you smile? For me it's a definite "Hell yes". :D It's a few pints or two packs of fags but you get to enjoy it for seven whole days. No brainer in my book! For the record I do around 20k a year as well, so just a bit less than you, and I'm waiting on a 220hp 2.0 TSI (trading up from a naturally aspirated 2.0 petrol Mazda 6).

Hi David.

Yes a deal, but not so great, (via Carwow) the best so far is £4002 for an L&K 280 estate, in a metalic paint + another £620 in necessary  & nice-to-have options.

Since the waiting time is so long we won't wait to trade-in a car, 'tis probably better to sell it now & dig the spare/ toy car out of the garage.

If you think I should look for a better deal elsewhere I'd appreciate your advice.

Cheers, David C.....

Hello David

Try new-car-discount.com  and check them out, I have done a lot of research into them and asked them a fair few questions and am more than happy (so far)

Also, I especially got a credit card to pay the deposit (don't normally do tick!) so just in case something goes wrong, I will be covered for the full amount!

I bought mine through them with no problems whatsoever, OK so you cannot track the car... but when you are getting 21% off I can live with that!

They get a glowing review from me too. I emailed Nick at NCD last Saturday evening to say the umbrella I was missing had finally been delivered and got an immediate email reply to thank me for letting him know - so they can be contacted out of hours too.

And the prize for most the dreadfully boring review ever goes to ….: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EQsMpHgLfY

If you can manage to stay awake, do please tell if he had anything else of interest to say apart from the fact that the gearbox is apparently a 7-speed. Good thing he noticed that during his thorough road test as I bet few owners here have picked up on that little detail.

How on earth do guys like him expect to make a living with their YouTube channels?

Just have to say..... I LOVE 2nd gear :-) feels ever it as fast as my 4litre TVR .... Just have to add my own bangs and pops :-(
