I thought I'd give Syron a try. I have their W rated Everest 1 Plus tyres fitted. I expected cheap & nasty but, like food and drink, I figured you should try at least once before criticising.

It was slated in one review for wet grip (Auto-Bild) so with that in mind I drove like a hooligan when we had atrocious wet conditions towards end of last year, driving at high speed through deep puddles, emergency braking from ever higher speeds -  not very scientific but for me it instilled confidence in their wet performance.

Just at the weekend I tried the launch control on a wet road, expecting the tyres to lose grip, but no, not even a hint of slippage.

The bonus is they're ridiculous cheap (they have a tie-in with Nexen to reduce costs and offer below-market pricing) and they are quiet - rated B - certainly quieter than the Pirellis that came with the car.

(Un)Fortunately I haven't had the opportunity to test them in snow but they performed well in freezing conditions.

My attitude was try them for one winter. If they're crap I'll switch to Conti's. Well, I won't be switching them for the foreseeable.

I sourced mine online from Tyre Leaders who import them from Germany.

I was looking at those Syron Everest 1s when we got the Mazda last year, but this winter was far too mild in our area to necessitate them. The new big kid on the block seems to be the acclaimed Michelin CrossClimate which is an all season tyre with good winter and summer performance. Unfortunately it's not available in the S3s size (on 18s at least?). The Everest appears to be, and isn't too expensive, so I might take another look following your experiences. Thanks for sharing. :)

Been told today that my car has week 13 build date and should be here mid April (ish) - which is nice. For info finalised spec is:

Total Extras £5990! But car came in at £32870 from Griffin Tax Free (I'm in the military) so that's an £8000 discount. Ridiculous spec I know but just seemed the right thing to do......

Nice spec. I was wondering what this beautiful lady was going to cost as I read down the list. Looking forward to seeing pictures later.

Thanks. Your new order looks great - pity that spec engine and gearbox isn't available in the UK! I note you're from Sweden - one of my favourite places. I share an office with a Swede and work with 3 others in the same building. I love Karlskrona!

Yes, Sweden is a very beautiful country and Karlskrona is one of many beautiful places. My father-in-law´s relatives are from Sturkö and island in the archipelago just outside Karlskrona.

OK, I take it back, the 280 is rather fast.

What impressed me the most was the stability at that speed. I've driven cars at similar high speeds but you end up gripping the steering wheel that bit tighter as you feel the front end getting light and the steering becomes less responsive.

The 280 just sat there firmly planted on the road - and that was with Individual/DCC set to Comfort.

I wouldn't exactly call it relaxing as you need 360º eyeballs and be constantly aware of what's happening a mile or more ahead of you but at least you're not fighting with the car - and that's kinda exhilarating!

I feel I should add comment that I always have the steering set to Sport.

Very well put and spot on - my impression exactly. I've been near those speeds in other cars, but it never felt so reassuring. It says a lot about the car generally; not just this particular engine.

The other beauty was the ability to pull away after having slowed to say 90ish for traffic and passing people who think their Audis or BMWs are fast at such a rate that sends a very clear message: don't even bother to try. And no-one did, as they would otherwise.

Have compass but not the protractor do you need one

Stopped by a dealer in Germany to ask about winter tyres. Highest rating they sell is also V, which they said is legally fine (for winter tyres). Knowing what sticklers they are about stuff like this in Germany, that would do for me too then.

Combo set with 18" Cassiopeia alloy wheels and either Conti or Dunlop winter tyres "offered" at €1930. Hmmm.

Incidentally, there was a fully specced 280 L&K estate in the showroom (green / beige) with a "cash sale" sticker price of over €56,000.

I don't think any of the major companies produce anything above 'V' rating for winter tyres although there are higher rated ones available from some of the lesser known companies.

btw Had my first proper chance to really give the car some power last Sunday night on a trip back from Gatwick Airport at well past midnight, great fun down the country lanes in full sport setting

Should I test drive before ordering from new-car-discount.com?

I currently have a Superb Mk 2 diesel Manual. Thinking of switching to 280 petrol, but not sure if I should test drive 4x4 or at least a lower power petrol first?

My local dealer only has diesels to test drive a 2wd at that.

Very tempted to just order blind knowing I love my current Superb so should love a new one.

Also which extras should one get? I am tempted to copy "IronAda" and tick almost all the extras.

The S3 is certainly a better car... even if the build quality is a bit questionable is areas.

A test drive certainly would not hurt, especially if you are considering the 280

Order it blind, I have.....also ordered my 1.8T Beetle blind and still using it near 13 years later!.

Why?

Has anyone been tempted to remap one of these yet?

The figures ive seen on a stage 1 map is 350 bhp, 450 Nm (331 ftlb) !! - With 4wheel drive, now that would surprise an aweful lot of cars ;)

Why?

Not has a test drive in Skodas since 2002. Never had a problem.

I think he's just having a larf UncW.

Remap.... Maybe when out of Warranty. It's fast enough though really. Unless you are OldNewbie of course lol !

Just the insurance hike that would put me off...

Anyone done any vid of what the car sounds like outside yet ?

Yup, the Sunay Times thinks its quick

"But with four-wheel drive, only a slingshot could fire something out of a bend faster than this modest saloon."

I was hoping that Clarkson would do a review, would be interesting to read his take on the car.

Hi to all on the 280 thread,

Well I've had mine for a few weeks now and have had a trip to France.

A few things that might interest peeps, ave MPG for 530 miles just about 30mpg.

one stone chip in Windsceen, now fixed by Autoglass. Do not break a screen unless you are fully insured, a new one is about £1,400 fitted.

Also you have to have the camera re aligned as the screen never goes exactly in the same place when a new screen is fitted!

Has any one had a good look up the rear exhaust? There are two pipes inside each crome outlet and one of thoose on each side has a flap like a choke and might be spring loaded. Any ideas?

What's it like to drive I hear you ask, It is very similar to my old MB 270 CDI estate, pulls like a train 2 up plus dog and 300 Kg of wine, the only draw back is that the tyres were well into the rear arches, so I must have been very close to the max gross weight. It did not feel rolly polly and I was on standard settings and at no time did it bottom out on the springs.

On the Motorway slip roads it tracked as if on rails an, some of the French on and off ramps are vey tight.

So what do we say so far. Bloody Good, love the DSG and being able to flick up to a higher gear with the paddle on the steering wheel, can't wait to have it run in and start to play tunes up and down the box, (  hope SWMBO does  not see this post) yes I know I am a pensioner and done my 3 score and ten, but time is running out.

Am I glad I bought an L & K with all the toys, you bet. Just one thing, does anybody know how the noise suppression works on the Canton sound system. Can't find anything any where about it.

Now whos got my car keys?

Interesting... Noticed the 4 exhausts but not the spring loaded flap... That however may explain my post 454 on this thread... Have a look.

On the mpg: in Holland, while mostly cruising at 130-140 km/h (speedo indicated) I got a similar figure – about 30.

What’s the ‘higher’ octane on offer in France?

Here it all seems to be 97. In Germany it’s 98-100. First fill I did in Holland was at a BP station where the “Ultimate” was likewise 98 octane. But the second time I pulled up at very large Shell station also displaying lots of “V-Power” pumps. However, closer inspection revealed every single one of those to be labelled “95” – I went so far as parking the car to walk along all the pumps and it was the same everywhere. I asked an attendant if they had any high-octane fuel and he said no. He then proceeded to google on his phone to see if he could find out what “V-Power” stands for in Holland!

Truth be told, I didn’t look at the relative prices, which might have given some indication (other than rip-off). But that ‘95’ plastered all over the place was just too off-putting. It was the same story at a Total station.

Amazingly, there is clearly no consistency in fuel even within such a small area called Western Europe.
