“Brakes and suspension mildly criticised due to the pace & power available.”

Really?

I bet they didn’t drive (i.e. test) the car at near 150 mph (indicated) like some of us have. Both brakes and suspension were certainly up to the job under those demanding conditions! There's no tougher test for brakes than repeated, sharp deceleration from such speeds. The car gave me more confidence in that situation than any other I've driven near such speed.

I haven’t seen the article, but the comment strikes me as yet more journo waffle – making it up as they go along.

Indeed. The Superb has a lot more 'bite' in the brakes than almost anything I've previously driven. It's much sharper and faster to stop than my outgoing Mazda 6.

The article says the brakes are just the standard Skoda bigger-engined Skoda items.

He doesn't specifically criticise them - only by inference - "one gaping flaw ... is that no effort has really been made to redress the mighty motor's additional strain on the chassis".

He does say that the "suspension tends to corkscrew into knots under pressure".

It is one of those quick reviews taking up one third of a page down the side. There's isn't any real detail - just a few quick thoughts really.

They do like it though overall! I'm sure the article will be on the Car website soon.

Not sure if that was posted here already, 350 ps in superb 4x4, in my opinion this is a audi s6 territory :)

Sweet

This 280 gets better and better....

Brakes are fine I imagine, the 3.6 is a slightly heavier car than the 280 and uses very similar brake disc units (same dia at least). Mine has great brakes and feel.

Dave

PS surprised about that weight issue on the Golf R - that's a heavy hatchback for its size!

I'll have to check the weights for a Golf R Estate & a 280 Superb Estate, but since they use the same power-train, & (probably) the same weight of components, it's only going to be

the difference of the extra steel & glass between the body-shells.

(Yes, I'm aware that's probably not totally accurate, but I'm open to correction.)

Not quite what one would expect...........

Bigger = lighter?

Thinner steel, smaller brakes, lighter engine?

According to DVLA the red car on their photo is a diesel so now I doubt they drove the 280...

After 3 years away from Briskoda it looks like i am on my way back to join you all!!!

Having had a Yeti 2.0 tdi 170 4x4 from 2010 to 2013 on contract hire i was then teased away by another part of VAG with an excellent 3 year deal on an 3.0 A6 Allroad. That deal is now coming to an end and the price on the A6 has shot up so i have looked around at other cars eg Passat Alltrack but not had any luck on deals. Golf R estate did stand out as a bonkers cheap price on contract hire but the boot was just a bit small for my requirements. So i am proud to say my Superb 280 was ordered yesterday!

Have gone for the SE L in Corrida red. Pegasus alloys, panoramic sunroof and spare wheel.

Delivery is estimated as mid to late September, going to be a long 5 months!

If it's an estate have a scout around for my pics on the picture thread ...

Cheers Nick_H , it is the estate. I will have a search for the pics.

What a suprise, im still checking on other cars but its looks like there is no competition in this price range for superb 280, decision was made, now im just waiting for sportline

The've just used a library photo, nothing suspicious about that.

The Superb strikes again.

Maybe so, but I wouldn't put anything like this past car journalists.

I'm sure it's a very tough trade indeed in which to make a living. I imagine first you have to establish the industry contacts to get your bum into the seats, and then you have to satisfy those contacts to keep on getting those invitations.

Meanwhile, you have to bang out review after review after review in a way you hope will interest the punters and satisfy your publisher. There is bound to be a huge amount of ‘artistic licence’ taken.

So while I would find this understandable, I think all this reporting should be consumed with great scepticism.

Only had the car a week and first recall - for the Panoramic sunroof. As if I'm going to dangle my head or fingers in the sunroof whilst using the 'convenience closing' - I ask you. Of course I'll regret that remark when I read that someone has decapitated their passenger!

Seriously though, 350 mile trip over the weekend, and apart from lane assist giving me the heebie jeebies (since found out how to turn it off) , everything is as wonderful as I expected, with the oft-remarked shortage of cubby holes and storage being my only present gripe. Running in but have noticed that using Econ for non-urgent travel is improving economy , also my Green Score is 99% (humour me, I'm a pensioner).

I've found that GreenScore is more a factor of the smoothness of the drive rather than any 'OAP' style driving. For example I regularly get a score of 98 to 100 despite making full use of the car (i.e. doing the limit in red ring areas and making 'good progress' according to the conditions in derestricted areas). If you accelerate harshly or use sport mode, it does start to plummet. Ironically it's not necessarily correlated to economy. For example dropping down to 3rd using the paddles can see MPG increase by 1 or 2 MPG for a stretch because of the corresponding decrease in required throttle pressure, but it doesn't stop the GreenScore dropping to 85 or so. :D

Like you I've found economy mode helps add a few MPG, mostly around the city/suburbs where it's low speed stop/start type traffic with opportunities to 'sail' in coasting mode towards red lights or standing traffic. Once the car is warmed up I find normal mode better, both for the driving experience and - ironically - economy, especially on A roads and motorways. Sticking to the limits tends to be the biggest factor in MPG. With a powerful engine, especially forced induction, it's so easy to be cocooned as you keep your foot slightly on the drive. The MPH creeps up just one or two, then three or four. You realise, drop back, then it starts all over. The end result is a gentle but constant application of gas that drains the economy. Learning to be strict with your right foot soon becomes a habit and you'll see a good three or four extra MPG. It's not boring driving, you're around town in residential areas. I just see it as saving up fuel to blast down the twisty roads later.

ETA: What is everyone's experience of different fuels? My 220 point blank refused to give over 28mpg most days last week, on Tesco M99 fuel. I did eek out 37mpg one day but that was a long five hour run. Back on VPower and economy is back to its usual 32mpg around town and 40+ on a run. Either I got a stale/bad batch of fuel, or the car really really doesn't like M99. It's not a supermarket snobbery / placebo either, as my last car absolutely adored M99 - it's the only reason I put some in the Superb! I think I'll be sticking to VPower from now on, though I may try Costco 97 RON simply because it's about £1 a litre atm in Liverpool and thus 15ppl cheaper than VPower.

hmm

i struggle to get over 30 mpg even on a long run, but max RON here is 95 (and MON can be utterly awful)
