buying a scout

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a used Scout and am going to view one armed with VCDS. What checks are worth doing both visually and via the ECU to see if it's a good buy?

Cheers

Assuming it's diesel, check how much ash there is in the dpf.

Find out when the haldex oil change was done (I can't remember if it's every 3 years or 40k - I had mine done at 3 years/40k!), the Proteus alloys are prone to delamination.

The FL has a different version of Haldex to the pre FL and the service requirements are different. I think FL is just mileage based.

Also there will be nothing in the service book about the Haldex service.

I found that most Scouts had towbars, often removable ones; if if had one check that the towbar is there and there's a key for it.

As above, check the wheels. If the front face has been repainted check the inside of the wheel too. Some garages tidy up the front only rather than doing a proper refurb. Budget accordingly.

On pre face lift I think the Haldex oil should be changed every 40,000 miles. If there's any doubt make sure the garage do it as part of the deal.

On our facelift 2011 Scout 1.8, the service book mentions the Haldex oil change on page 7, every 60,000km (37,000miles).

The wheels delaminate as mentioned above, we are on our second set.

Are you looking for a diesel or petrol?

My 2010 face-lift had new EGR valve, expensive and big job as low down by bulk head. Also had the Haldex pump replaced. My car had FSH too.

I wouldn't worry about the delamination on wheels, just get them refurbished and powder coated in nice new colour.

Thanks for all the replies ladies and gents.

I'm after the 2.0 TDi. It'll be a pre FL.

trundlenut how would I check ash in the DPF? i

Is there a reliable way to check the

Haldex pump

EGR valve

Turbo

Injectors

With vcds?

Does anyone know what type of injectors the pre FL scout has - the piezo or solenoids type?

(also does anyone know the engine code for a 2007 pre FL scout - is it BMM?)

Yes it should be a Bmm. To check the dpf I think it's measuring block 068.

Bit far from you, but mine's up for grabs. ;)

Oh and the current soot load of the dpf is given as a % but the ash load is in grams, with 60g being the maximum amount.

Car it essentially error-free. The only errors that I've had are because the RNS wants 2 aerials and the car only has one (very very common, and irrelevant as the RNS will be taken out) and the LEDs in the puddle lights throw an error (but not on the dash) as the central electrics looks for specific resistance (i.e filament bulbs) instead of open curcuit. (I hav no idea vhy ze germanz do ziz)

Any questions, feel free to ask :) :)
