Not convinced vRS is performing as it should

Featured Replies

hmm well I posted a while ago asking whether the performance of a vRS will get better as it piles on the mileage (as the car was brand new), because i wasn't convinced it was as quick as I remembered.

Well basically i'm still not convinced, it's done over 2000miles now and haivng a bit of a play with my mate on the way to work made me think it's lacking oomph somewhere. He's got a V plate Astra 1.8 (0-60 9.5, 122mph etc), and on a dual carriageway at around 70-80mph i was ONLY just pulling away. Given the extra torque of the fab I would have expected it to leave it for dead at the top end, but it didn't.

Is this normal? It seems to be really lacking power after sort of 3500rpm (I know it should tail off). So is there anything I should be looking for? or is it just a case of leaving it till it's got a good 5000 - 6000 miles on it??

It's all over as you approach 90.

And a 110 you hit a brick wall.

Perhaps the demo car felt fast because it was the first time you'd driven one? Now you're used to the car it feels as fast/slow as it actually is.

My car felt amazingly fast for the few weeks after it's remap, now it feels slow.

Power will drop off around 3.5Krpm. It's best to shift up before then.

The engine doesn't really loosen up until you clock up a lot of miles.

On a erm private runway I wanted to test it's supposedly top speed of 126/8? And at 110 it just didn't want to carry on lol, it got to 120 and I gave up.

Mine's standard and pulled so much better after about 6k miles - at 2k miles it's a slug :thumbdwn:

I also found that the top end frees up a lot with use, I tend to change at about 4400 nowadays if I'm driving hard.

Not sure why the Ibiza would be different but it gets to an indicated 120 very easily.

I dont think mine stops pulling at 110............not that I have never been that fast myself, purely going on what my personal test driver done.

Though it didn't pull as hard

I hope the air-bag works :(

*cough* indicated 150+

had 135 out of it when it was standard..

So some people reckon it should keep on pulling happily past 110, others say it dies off by then?

Is there a big variation in these engines? Or is it old vs New differences etc?

Should I be worried?

oh, forgot to say, yours will have the new style gearbox, so will run outta puff before say... mine would

but it DOES get better... youll think "wow" when you get it back after the 10k service

So the newer vRS's are slower than the first models due to a new gearbox? Kinda sucks.

some of them may not be standard ;)

Also the oldier models have a longer gearbox ratios which helps with a higher top speed and mpg. Newier ones are quicker off the mark

I have to say my Octy will easily go over 110 and onto 120+ with no problems (when empty and no ladders on the roof).

The fact it's now done over 64,000 miles might be something to do with it.

I've seen an indicated 140mph on a clear cool morning in my Furby with about 6k miles on.

Cough, cough... me too.

Change up at 3200 rpm as the power tails off, instead of trying to wring every last ounce out of the engine, would be my advice.

Mine has the Cupra intake + Green filter, and it was tested on a private road where I hit similar speeds to Neo_VR. That was with < 500 miles on the clock. It's done 20k+ now and it's loosened up a little. The main difference was the MPG however, not the performance as such.

Remap-wise, I've not gone there and I won't this year, but that should break out a few more horses :D

I'm quite eagre to give the cupra intake + filter a go, but i'm worried about warranty cover. End of the day I know it will invalidate the warranty but will the garage really pay any attention?

Perhaops it doesnt feel super fast because it isnt super fast ?

I Got 135 out of my last vRS (Which had done about 1500 miles), but the one I have now only got to 110 until recently when it passed 5000 miles. This one was second hand and the same age.

Maybe some are just put together better than others?

Got the vrs up to indicated 130, 55 plate with 1700miles on the clock against a c5 hdi was quite surprised how quickly it got there.

im sure mine is fooked lol
