My winter tyres turned to puddles of molten rubber today. Had to get a lift back to pick up my summers as it was 10c! Dam you mother nature!

  • In that case you (and I) are going to die in an exploding ball of fire in the bottom of a snow filled ravine, having slid off an ungritted ice-covered road due to us not having spent £800 on a spare s

  • Im sorry, but that is the sillyest thing Ive read so far today. Ok granted, Im used to a totally different winter than you, but no matter how good a driver you are, summertyres is outright dangerous

  • In a lot of the UK we can have an entire year with no snow and ice, and for the few days that it might happen I can just leave the car on the drive. If I lived in a more rural area with worse weather

I can comment on Cumbria and the Peak District, they might, just occasionally, be useful there although chains would probably be better. I don't believe that in this day and age winter tyres are essential in much of the UK with sensible driving and ABS - unless you choose to fit slicks in the summer - they are a marketing ploy.

You must know a different bit of the Peak District to me then.  The last few years we've had substantial falls of snow lasting many weeks and, for a number of days within those periods it's only those that have been prepared that have been able to get out and about.  OK Derbyshire County Council are pretty good at clearing snow but Sheffield City Council are notoriously bad and there are still lots of areas they don't clear.  I certainly wouldn't have wanted to be without the Octy 4x4 and decent tyres over the last few years.

However I don't have space to store tyres so I've gone All Seasson and Cross Climate...

I wonder whether the 4x4 has anything to do with it?

I do however agree that "All Season" tyres are the way to go, almost as they were in the past ;)

stick a 4x4 on 'all seasons' or 'winters' and youll shine.. but a 4x4 alone isnt going to work out too well.

trust me.. the standard of driving is still the lacking factor.. flying up to junctions and jumping on the breaks last minute is always going to cause problelms 'oh ****.. why wont it stop?'.

a 4x4 will only stop as well as a 4x2. The tyres then are relevant and the only thing 4x4 is going is giving idiot false hope who dont understand. (maybe abit worse because of the weight?)

as ive said before.. i had a moment a few weeks ago on the Vector 4 Seasons (in the fabia 2) that really was quite nasty. it couldnt stop.. nothing  could stop.. the car was pretty much driving me.. i didnt touch anyhing.. it understeered like buggery.. i locked it round and tried to spin it round.. nothing.. i touched the brakes to regain traction and luckily (there was no skill there.. it was luck) it gripped again and pulled around. phewww. the worlds slowest crash nearly happened.

1 golf in a wall.. one van in a wall.. another car in a field (this was at 4:30am) and one 4x4 that realised 4x4 didnt help braking (good on him tbf... he saw sense) who didnt brave what id just come up.

it was bloody nasty. would i of not crashed on summers? i doubt it.. i was seriously debating pulling over... locking the doors and having a few hours kip until the sun game up... no summer tyre would of sorted me out there... id of been in a wall.. the vector 4's were seriously struggling even with a driver that (can i say it?) had half an idea of how to make them work.

it was snow with ice underneath.. it was a nightmare.. summers? meh.. that must of been the cars i went past.. and the cars in the walls.

choice of tyre.. and having half a clue how to drive on them, is king

Someone mentioned before that our parents brave snow in the yester-years as if it was summer, because the tyres in those days were not specific summer tyres - but more like all season tyres......????

I entirely agree that four wheel drive isn't going to help you to "stop" - it is designed to help you "drive"- the clue is in the name ;)

Neither four wheel drive or "special" tyres are ever a substitute for common sense and patience - experience and skill will also help.

Edit: Odd - tried to edit this post to quote Wayne, as vxh26 posted just before me, and it added a post instead.

I think that's as much to do with the much narrower tyre profiles back then as the nature of the rubber. I managed fine in rear wheel drive cars even in quite heavy winter conditions, until I got the Octavia. That was noticeably worse for grip on snow, even with new summer tyres.

You say it like youve never seen a 4x4 race up to a junction in the snow and slam the brakes on.. Then watched the look of confusion on their face "oh. It wont stop"

Your (very strange) interpretation of my experience.

I can't recall EVER seeing a 4x4 race up to a junction in the snow and slam the brakes on.. Then watched the look of confusion on the driver's face "Oh. It wont stop"

Do you by any chance happen to live somewhere with occasional snowfall and a lot of Z list celebrities who have too much money and very little sense?

I've never seen that happen.

You can have all the skill in the world and 4x4 and still be left by those on winters.

I've never seen that happen.

Seems to happen quite abit around here.

Especially RR drivers.
