  • In that case you (and I) are going to die in an exploding ball of fire in the bottom of a snow filled ravine, having slid off an ungritted ice-covered road due to us not having spent £800 on a spare s

  • Im sorry, but that is the sillyest thing Ive read so far today. Ok granted, Im used to a totally different winter than you, but no matter how good a driver you are, summertyres is outright dangerous

  • In a lot of the UK we can have an entire year with no snow and ice, and for the few days that it might happen I can just leave the car on the drive. If I lived in a more rural area with worse weather

ZERO degrees this morning!

car covered in solid frost - apart from windscreen which I had applied AngelWax H2GO rain repellant - I just wipe away the frost with me fingers :) :) :)

All my door seals cleaned with Meguiers Naturalsshine Protectant (as originally recommended by ChrisR    ) :)

I thought so too - I mean, the word POWER and HYBRID don't exactly go together (unless u got a Tesla!)

A Tesla is 100% Electric isn't it?

Just fitting an aftermarket Transportation rear seat - got it from a Star Trek convention-cum-jumble-sale .... :notme:  :D  :D  :D

sounds like a rare place.

i hope youve checked for stains :D :D lolol

Van was frozen this morning.  Quick luke warm water defrost and I was on my way.  Grip was same at zero degrees as other temps as the van runs on the budget of budgety tyres :D

So crap grip hot or cold then? :)

It is amazing just how cheap you can get OK tyres rather than ditch finders.

Just order so Kumhos, V rated, 205/60-16, £33 quid delivered.  Bargain.

Sites such as Oponeo, Tyreleader and Mytyres often seem to be half the price of other outlets (European mega hubs rather than smaller UK businesses perhaps?)

It is even more amazing that people managed for so many years to drive all four seasons on the same set of tyres - just goes to show the impact of climate change on the UK I guess . . .

You could argue that they managed fine before airbags, abs, seat belts, crash safety regulations, but I know what I'd rather have fitted to my vehicle.

Even at the height of summer, during my early morning commute to work I would get the ice warning bong at least once a week.

A very fair point about safety features - none of which need to be changed dependent on the season.

However, I have driven out to the French Alps in the winter for many years, frequently twice a year. I do not know of a single person from the UK who has ever fitted special winter tyres for a trip there other than people who live in the resorts all winter. Everyone carries snow chains (as required by the Gendarmerie) and I have used them twice.

I can accept that where one experiences snow, ice or flooding at certain times of the year (e.g. Scandinavia), suitable (e.g. studded) tyres are essential. I can't comment on Glasgow, I don't live there. I can comment on Cumbria and the Peak District, they might, just occasionally, be useful there although chains would probably be better. I don't believe that in this day and age winter tyres are essential in much of the UK with sensible driving and ABS - unless you choose to fit slicks in the summer - they are a marketing ploy.

No the impact of tyre development and the move to high speed rated summer tyre standard fitment to most new vehicles.

Oh my Lord!!........Perhaps a change in title?

Tyres on cars of yesterday were more versatile, as were the cars ie higher ride heights.

People use to drive up to the top of Ben Nevis to have a picnic in their Model T.  The cars and tyres could do it.  Try that in  a 320D or Superb or the like.

Narrow tyres with substantial block patterns and the cars with load of ground clearance could do this.  Modern summer tyres are usually closer to something like a race tyre and hence fairly rubbish in handling standing water of a few millimeter, mud, snow etc.

Something I have just noticed is that sometimes tyres sellers call something a Summer tyre and the manufacturer says it is an all season tyre ie in the same of Kumho KH18s I have just order 4 of for the Jaaaag.   C rated wet weather grip so just about OK for a car I poodle in.  LIke many of the tyres companies (Nexen, Conti, etc) they have plant in cheap places Eastern Europe, China that use advanced western tech.

KUMHO KH18 TOURING VALUE

Non directional tread design and low noise with all season compound Manufactured in our new Chinese plants for the value conscious consumer who requires an economical replacement tyre that doesn’t compromise performance and safety.

A tyre designed for low noise and economic driving

Well my Dad's 75 and he fits winters.

Why? Because a few winters ago he borrowed my car with winters fitted while his car was off the road. He's fitted them every year since.

I find that in an emergency braking situation I don't have time to nip out and fit snow chains. :)

Very true

Ive seen this too

Opinions on something never tried simply because, " We never used them when we were younger"

Nice one!

Just need s a wash now :)

Maybe our resident detailer "ChrisR" can help? :)

And even a little hatch can have 215 wide tyres now.

Not the skinny little 'cut through the snow' things the old micras and such had.

LOL about Glasgow.

Scotlands largest City and on the West Coast of Scotland so on the Clyde and near the sea and not a particularly cold or snowy place,

windy and wet though, especially just now.

There are not many UK Cities that have Transport Problems for long when there is Snow or prolonged cold periods.

That is why they are cities, because they expanded where there was no extreme weather issues, flooding maybe,

huge build up of snow, unlikely.

Bradford and surrounding towns can be horrendous and brought to a standstill by just a couple of inches of snow

When I was based in Glasgow for my Merchant Navy training remember being told that Glasgow has a higher average temperature than London. West coast versus East coast.  Much wetter though.

ChrisRS, anyplace can be horrendous including Bradford with a few inches of snow.

But even Bradford is hardly going to be a Studded Tyre required city, but some Winter tyres for that few inches of snow would certainly help many, up and down hills.

As we know from this and the dozens of other very similar threads.

As to people visiting French Alps fitting or not 'Special Winter Tyres' re post #188.

The people i know that are Scottish Skiers usually already have winter tyres on the vehicles they travel abroad with, due to having

them on for getting to the Scottish Slopes.

Snowgates Closed again tonight in some areas,

Snow seldom being the real issue,  it is Snow and Wind hence drifting, that causes the closures usually.

& in the case of Fettercairn to Banchory, the Steepness and the Ice.

I can't argue with most of that. I guess that your first sentence is the most significant - are tyre manufacturers really incapable of producing a satisfactory, economical all-season tyre or do they deliberately design tyres with a view to "encouraging" people to shell out for a winter set?

You are absolutely right about minimal wheel (and bodywork) clearance and snow, I have seen quite a few cars unable to move because of inadequate clearance.
