7 Degrees this morning: Got your WINTERS on yet?

Featured Replies

I put mines on when it's constantly below 7oC. I'm in a high part of Glasgow, East Kilbride and we get it right bad at times. This year I'm rocking black steelies with Michelin SP winter sport 4D's

  • In that case you (and I) are going to die in an exploding ball of fire in the bottom of a snow filled ravine, having slid off an ungritted ice-covered road due to us not having spent £800 on a spare s

  • Im sorry, but that is the sillyest thing Ive read so far today. Ok granted, Im used to a totally different winter than you, but no matter how good a driver you are, summertyres is outright dangerous

  • In a lot of the UK we can have an entire year with no snow and ice, and for the few days that it might happen I can just leave the car on the drive. If I lived in a more rural area with worse weather

I got the first 'low temperature' bong since last winter this morning on my way in to work.

4 degrees Celsius.

Mine aren't on yet- we live on a hill in the Peak District and our country roads are not well treated, and my commute to work is in the dark and cold during winter. But it's not been below 7C yet, and it's warm for most of the day. I'll stick them on later this month or early November when we've had some days that're cold all the way through.

I don't see them as an excuse to drive as if the road is safe, I drive just as I would with summer tyres (carefully in sketchy conditions). It's just nice to have done everything I can to be safe, though I appreciate in a lot of the country they aren't necessary.

Mine are all on steelies at the minute, though, and I bought some alloys to put them on so I've got to do that first. If anyone wants a set of 15" steelies for a Fabia or Mk1 Octavia just let me know.

Winter tyres ordered for the Mazda this morning from my local fitters, Castle Tyres

I will briefly repeat here my thoughts.

Temperature doesn't matter much if road is clear of snow. Summer tyres will be little harder in cold, and so grip will be little worse than winter tyre, but the difference is so small that I would much rather drive on new summer tyre than on weared winter tyre if road is clear of snow/ice, no matter what temperature is.

However, if vehicle gets on snow or ice with summers, then all sort of problems will arise, because winters are so much better at snow, so that those two can't be compared at all in such conditions.

So, it depends if you get snow or not. If you're sure you will never be on snow, I wouldn't bother with winter tyres. If there is even medium chance for getting vehicle on snow, then winter tyre is must have.

You get Ground Frosts and road temperatures around freezing, and rain, and damp and black ice, and differing road surfaces and cambers, and all sorts of differences and maybe no snow.

30 miles from me as the crow flies today there is a temperature difference of over 24 degrees from morning till now.

Below freezing to 23*oC, there there could be snow weeks before i have it here.

Snow is not a problem more often than not in Scotland,

untreated roads and Ice & Black ice can be.

Winter/Cold weather tyres might not save you where there is Black Ice, but they certainly are a great assistance

in journeys at times when Black Ice is a possibility.

I have seen many a road up here with no snow on it & totally clear. I have seen also no snow by the side of the road.....However in both situations I have seen the road shining from total black ice & hard frost. WHY? because it was warm during the day, at night it was clear & temp dropped to -C figures so moisture in air condensed on road & hardened & formed either a frost or black ice.

The above situation IMO is the worst driving conditions as the road is like a polished smooth ribbon of black glass.......................winter tyres cope with this way better than summers & no snow in sight! This is the main reason I have winter tyres.

I like the massive water clearing channels.

I feel worth pointing out that tread depth should be at least 4 mm with Winters / All seasons.

Just been sat bored on eBay and I've given in, 3x 14" Clio Wheels for £15 delivered, just got to find one more then order a set of winters in that size ( about £35 a tyre)

Just been out in the car n it reckoned 15 degrees.

At this time of day?

Wouldnt put the winters on just yet.. Haha

Consistently below 7C is recommended..... give or take a few degrees

  • 4 weeks later...

Use All Seasons then "No Worries" if 0 C in the morning and 20 C driving home.  Simples.

I do (:

Vector 4 seasons for me

November is forecast to be the warmest on record

Where?

OK, i see who said it and i see where it is 'The Country'  & that being the UK',

then all places mentioned are all in 2 Countries, not the 4 that make up the UK.

'Hottest start to November'.

So Southern parts of the British Isles.

Any link to it being forecast to be the Warmest November on record?

(other than the Headline of that article.)

The only problem I have with this subject, which seems to go on almost all year round; Is why keep starting new topics on it all the time??

Just tag onto the previous xxxx amount of winter tyre topics/threads that are running.

Pretty dammed sure when someone comes along and starts a topic anywhere else on the forum that has been done to death or been previously talked about they get instantly directed or pasted a link to the previous topic and told "use the search" facility!

Waiting to be burned at the stake :(

Just the right time for All Seasons....

Summer vs. All-season tyres
Summer tyres:

Summer tyres are designed for optimal performance at temperatures above 7 °C.  These tyres typically use a soft rubber compound that delivers good grip and handling on both dry and wet roads.  However, this same compound makes summer tyres less suitable in winter weather conditions below 7 °C.

Choose a summer tyre if:

  • You want to maximize your vehicle’s handling and performance during milder months
  • You have a set of winter tyres for colder months
  • You experience very mild winters with temperatures remaining above 7 °C (allowing you to use summer tyres all year long)
All-season tyres:

All season tyres offer a reasonable compromise between the performance of dedicated summer and winter tyres. They are a viable option for regions with moderate winter weather (light snowfall, with temperatures rarely dropping below freezing). Goodyear all-season tyres meet high standards for performance in winter conditions and bear the same ‘M+S‘ and ‘Snowflake’ designations as winter tyres. This means they are acceptable for winter use where winter tyres are required by law.

Choose an all-season tyre if:

  • You live where winter temperatures don’t drop below -5 °C (if they do, you should buy winter tyres)
  • You want to use the same set of tyres year round
  • You’re unable to store and fit a second set of tyres

For optimal performance in winter conditions, we recommend fitting a set of dedicated winter tyres.

16Deg.C here, today

I'll leave the Winters in the shed for a wee while.

Steve.

15-16 degrees C here in the borders. So I think it will be yet another extremely mild winter, haven't had to defrost the car properly in last 3 winters so I think I'll survive without the winter tyres yet again.

As North West Europe becomes more like Labrador due to diminishing Gulf Stream we will get some warm days and then temperature plunging by 30 degrees in a few days.  Experience this living in Canada myself.  It is not Global Warming it is Climate Change and more extreme changes are the feature so we are likely to see both higher temperature and lower temperatures the recent data and computer modelling predict.

Semi-awesome people with nounce use All Season accordingly.

Apparently it reached 22c yesterday in west wales and is expected to do so again today.

One thing is for sure, at the moment its pretty mild as we draw the air up from the med, but all it takes is a northerly breeze to bring in the ice cold air at this time of year. I've got the heating switched on with the thermostat on 19c and its hardly run at all so far since turning it on.

A beautiful early drive south on the A9 this morning,

below freezing after the Drumochter pass and still just above further south and the sun is brilliant as it shows

through when it is not Freezing Fog blocking it.

These daytime November heatwaves can have lovely days and cold nights.
