I don't need winter tyres because I am so awesome thread

Featured Replies

Never used winter tyres..... I have two types of trousers for driving in, the very bravest trousers..... And ex-brave trousers that require extensive laundering. :)

Its 5 degrees out there now ion the tops. (in Derbyshire anyway).

Winters already holding their own and it isnt even November yet.

I like grip. Grip is my friend.

[emoji21] point made I think if you're insisting on calling 5 degrees winter.

i think the point is that so called winter tyres grip better at 5 degrees that the "summer" tyres, I buy the best tyres for grip in the warmer weather so why not do the same when it gets colder?

has anyone ever added up how much they spend on fuel compared to tyres? it makes the cost of the tyres pretty much meaningless.

Depends how many miles you do before the cost of tyres becomes meaningless.

My net spend on 3 sets of alloys for winter tyres on 2 cars is £60, or £100 if you include the cost of swapping tyres from one set of rims to another when I changed cars

that's true, I do about 25000-30000 and self employed so I cant be stuck at home

Just pop the trunk. Even better if you have an Estate :p

And Norwegian media also reports a very cold winter. Seems like the chaps at accuweather has predictet it. And I live so far north its not even on that map :-/

By the looks of that, the north of England will be pretty mild winter with only cold spells or 'seasonable' so I think I'll be fine with standard tyres.

I've never used winter tyres in 17 years of driving but i'm considering it this year for some reason.

Getting old..Got old..LOL.... no offence,nor insult intended..

Lol.

No.

The temps are dropping and it isnt even November yet, is my point (:

Im well aware of what winter is. A 2wd with summers on simply wont get around here when it really sets in.

But in the mean time, theres still more grip with all seasons/winters at the mo.

Insurance excess is £500 for me. Winter tyres are only £320. One minor incident on the wrong tyres will cost me more than the price to avoid it in the first place.

OMG What have I started? I made a tongue in cheek comment about the plane taking off, to PP (it was a reference to a thread that got out of control, which asked the question about a plane on a treadmill......Google it!) it was NOT meant to have any reference to whether aeroplanes use winter tyres or not

Good grief!

My boss was talking to someone who worked in a council depot once. When this guy started to ask questions about the btaketester, to which my boss replied this brakerester can even be used to test submarines. The guy was impressed my boss not so much.

No, your maths and Insurance practice knowledge are at fault.

Only an incident causing damage to your own vehicle, caused by yourself and costing more than £320, will cost you more than the price of a set of tyres which may, or equally may not, help you avoid paying out.

Of course, you could always drive in a manner suitable for the conditions and avoid having an incident at all.  :D

I haven't had an at fault claim for at least 27 years, so am well in pocket

Why are there people in this thread arguing the case for winter tyres? This is the thread where awesome people who don't need them hang out, isn't it?

So, would reducing tyre pressures be a good idea to aid traction? Or perhaps working from home on snowy days would be an option? Or slowing down and driving to the weather conditions? All are ideas mooted by people as a means of avoiding the need for winter tyres.

As regards my maths, I think you misunderstand. In an incident where I'm unable to avoid a small collision due to unsuitable tyres, I could very easily cause a fair amount of damage to the front end of my car. A xenon headlight alone would knock a good £300 out of my wallet, without even considering any bodywork or paint, then there's recovery, inconvenience, vehicle off road for repairs, loss of value due to repairs etc. which would both annoy me and cost me. However, back to the maths. A set of summer tyres cost me £360 in March this year, while a set of winter tyres has just cost me £320. That's fitted, done, sorted, on the spare set of alloys, and all I have to do is spent 10 minutes swapping the wheels over as required. Now the clever maths bit... My summer tyres will last 20k miles more or less, and the winter tyres about the same So I'll now be able to travel 40k miles for £780 spend on summer/winter tyres instead of 20k miles for £360 on just summer tyres.

All that's happened is I spend roughly the same money on tyres over the life of both sets, but they both last longer overall meaning I'm no worse off at all. And I get to enjoy the benefits of suitable tyres for all seasons.

People spend hundreds of pounds on the best summer tyres so that their sporty car will perform well while they drive to work or go shopping when the sun shines, and they have the mindset that because they do so then they're going to be okay in winter?

Anyway, my new ones are on the van for delivery today, so I'll be fine for the next few years. Plus my wife and daughter will be in the best position to stay safe on the roads. And I'm happy enough with that (given it's cost me nothing at all in the big picture...)

£500 excess? Yikes, haven't had that for over a decade. Ours is £75 on a fully comp policy

Voluntary high excess and low premiums, then don't have any accidents. :p
