Personally I don't care if others don't use winter tyres.

For the love of god though, if you do get stuck move over to the side so those with 4wd/winters/both can get past you. Ill give you a wave - in fact, may even give you a tow. ;-)

I couldnt care less if they get stuck. But I do care when they come sliding into me or someone I care about.

When that happens they should be fined so hard that their grandkids would still be paying on the fine.

And that's the problem, wet leaves, standing water, fog, speed limits etc. it means nothing to a lot of people, 40 is the default speed setting. One test sometimes 60yrs earlier and no further training required. Scary biscuits isn't it. All seasons tyres will make no difference to a shocking driver.

What should the fine be for someone with winter tyres on driving well beyond the capabilities of the tyres and themselves who come sliding into me or someone I care about when I'm driving on summer tyres perfectly adequately in the conditions?

I have in the last 5 minutes, just stopped reading up about these tyres They are top of my wish list at present. Good price too

I just ordered 4 Vredestein Wintrac Xtremes for the car.

I got them from Tyre Leader, shipped direct to a local tyre fitter and then fitted for £10 each, £89 each in total.

 

I too read nothing but good things about them, the A rating on wet roads clinched it for me, a rarity for winter tyres.

The same as doing it in the summer with summertyres. Stupid driving is stupid driving no matter the season. Driving with unsuitable tyres makes it even stupider, no matter what season.

I thought it was for people who like winter tyres, but think people who dismiss them are silly Billys. But there again I am more than a little confused thanks to eating a whole packet of Jelly Minions and suffering a bit of a sugar rush

I have no idea, I only got involved because a tape measure holder inferred I was a kn*b for not fitting them to my daily. Was an AO in Dept of Transport two decades ago.  Since Customs, Big 4, software house and top 10 logistic company now paid similarly to a Superintendent ie £70K.

Yes people across the country got a shock on 2010/2011 with a prolonged and utterly out of the norm pair of winters, where you could legitimately drive on winter tyres for about 3 months solid.

 

But it was a blip, look at the last two years, one day of snow. You're really going to spend £600 + a set of steel rims on the off chance that there might be a repeat of 2010/11? When it's snowy you slow down a bit and gear up, but the extra expense of winter tyres is a con perpetrated by the tyre industry to grab the gullible's cash. They are not necessary.

Two decades ago the grading structure in the Civil Service started at Admin Assistant (AA) then to Admin Officer (AO), Exec Officer (EO), HIgher Exec Oficer (HEO), Senior Exec Officer (SEO) then Principal, so that proves nothing.

I worked my way from AA to EO before I left in that era!

As has been pointed out a few times already there is a common misconception that winter tyres are only useful in the snow.

 

The clue is in their name.
