Oil Change ?

Featured Replies

I'm due an oil change but don't want to go to my Skoda dealer again as they keep charging me £4 something for topping up the washer bottle even if its full.

So I want to get my own Oil and filter. The oil that's in the car now is, Shell Helix Ultra 5-30, which is what Skoda dealer's put in.

The Shell Oil, from what I can gather, is a decent oil. The problem I seem to be getting bogged down with is the "500" numbers. Different sites don't give the same "recommended" oil ?

My book says QG0, so no DPF.   And uses the 506-01 number ? This is what is confusing me ?

If yours is a 1.9 TDI as your profile, then you need oil which meets 505.01

You can also use 507 as this exceeds the spec of 505.01.

VW/Skoda dealers will use Quantum Platinum in your car.

A 5L container of this is available is for £22.75 delivered from an Audi dealer.

You can get an oil filter for less than £5

An oil change service on a 1.9 TDI is very easy, and can be done in under 30 minutes.

I'd highly recommend doing it yourself, you only need a few basic tools.

Don't forget a new sump plug for £1.18

If they have not used a Bottle of VW Washer Fluid & yet they charge you for it,

Skoda (£3.45 plus VAT)  VW £3.79 plus VAT 'WG 052 164 M2'

the Bottle should be in the Car opened with some used, or unopened if the Washer Bottle was full when the technician checked.

Or tell them to 'Not fill my washer bottle',  when handing over the keys when leaving the car,

and tell them to 'not put it on the Invoice as a part & charge VAT on it'.

If they never used Washer Fluid, and charge for it, that is fraud, simple as that.

Maybe Only £3.45 plus VAT, but still fraud.

Thanks SS for info. Had not thought about sump plug. :nerd:   The sticker under the bonnet says Shell Helix used. So as long as its 505 and upwards i'll be ok.

My dealer also uses Shell Helix but Castrol Magnetec recommendations adorn the Handbook wallet. Must admit I have always used Magnetec on previous cars as it is supposed to stick to metal surfaces on start up preventing wear. Interesting to know if Castrol is used in the factory for first fill up!!

As you can see from my first post i'm easily confused. So I decided to order some oil, but before I do i'll see what different prices there are. The confusedness comes from, not the prices, but which grade of oil. The Quantam oil above is 5-40 which some sites recommend ,but other sites recommend 5-30 for my car. Roomster 1.9D  2008.  ??  :wonder:

So, is it, 5-30 or 5-40 ?  :nerd:

Both will be fine, but 5W30 is thinner at high temperatures.

I'd just stick with 5W40 Quantum Platinum as you cannot go wrong.

Thanks Sam (SS). :coffee:

As already mentioned the correct oils should be approved or meet the 505.01 or 507.00 specs.

505.01 oil is normally 5W40

507.00 is 5W30

Do not use oil graded as 505.00 as it is not suitable for the PD TDI engine in your car.

Why not just find a local specialist independent.  They'll be a bit cheaper than the dealer and you can be reasonably confident they will use the right parts & lubricants.

From the questions you've been asking, I'd be wondering if you've done the job before?

Hi Brad. Last time I did an oil change was on a Metro 1.4 GTi, maybe 16yrs ago. The Roomster's been done at dealers since new, but decided wanted to do myself, due to cost at dealers. Also can be "fully Confident" the right stuff is being used. A lot has changed since the Metro years.

ps, are you a true Aussi ? I have a son who's been living over there for about 12yrs now.
