Offers on oil & filter changes - are they worth doing?

Featured Replies

So, my Fab is due an oil change within the next 1,500 miles and I notice that there are lots of places that are offering an oil & filter change for under £70 which seems like a good deal given that decent oil & a filter will cost the best part of £50 alone.

I don't have the facilities myself to drop the oil and any of the ones that I have looked at do seem to use VW spec oil.  I have attched a link below for National Tyres who are doing this at under £50.

http://www.national.co.uk/oil-vehicle-search.aspx

There is also an additional 10% off with National Tyres for booking on line / vouchercloud.

Halfords - can't get the link to work but they are £50 using their own VW spec semi synthetic oil.

There are others too such as ATS & Hi-Q but are there any that I should avoid?

My engine is on 126k at the moment but I only had a brand new turbo 8k ago so don't want to put cheap oil in it but at the same time don't want to pay main dealer prices.

Any recommendations?

If you are simply after an oil+ filter change, you can get the oil and filter yourself for less than £30.

If you can't do it yourself, that National offer is hard to beat. £42 for an oil change is very good, providing they put the correct oil in.

The website says it will be Titan GTI Pro-C3 5w30 XTL, which meets VW 507 so is fine for your vRS.

I'd book with them, but watch them to make sure that's what they're putting in the car as the wrong oil will damage your camshaft.

Ye and are notorious for saying your tyres look like they need replacing, even if they have 5mm left.

They can tell me that my exhaust, brakes & gearbox need replacing as long as they change my oil & filter for £40 odd quid   :D

What the difference in the oils as in is one any better than the other? The specs are listed below:

Fuchs Titan GT1 5w40 XTL fully synthetic oil meets VW 502 00 / VW 505 00 / VW 505 01

Fuchs Titan GT1 Pro Flex 5w30 XTL fully synthetic oil meets VW 504 00 / 507 00

Is the 5w30 the better choice simply because it meets a higher VW spec?

Either will be fine to be honest. They're both fully synthetic and meet 505.01

5W40 is the same grade as Quantum Platinum that a Skoda dealership would use, so I'd go with the GT1 5W40.

I've heard of people's PD engines using oil when running 5W30, presumable because it's a bit thinner when up to temp.

Thanks for the response.

I have the Quantam 5w30 oil in at the moment and mine hasn't used a drop since the last oil change.

Good to know that I can go with either
