Low Power From 1.9 TDi?

Featured Replies

As will be obvious I have no mechanical knowledge. So I am not even sure I have a problem. But I would welcome some opinion. I bought an early (2007) Fabia II with the 105BHP 1.9 TDi engine. I was hoping to get the "Big Engine" feel with lower running costs. But the more I drive it on familiar roads, the more it seems to have too little power. I don't think the engine is changing - just my perception of it.

The car seems generally gutless below 2,000 revs only waking up at 2,500 and beyond. Typical speeds of 30MPH and 60MPH (depending on gear) seem to equate to about 1,900 revs where there is no throttle response. Indeed it seems to actually lose speed. I am forever changing gear. Cruising on main roads it seems much happier in fourth gear (it has a five speed gearbox). Hills need a drop of gear.

However, in the only test I could think of, on a quiet road and starting at about 20 MPH I floored the accelerator in second gear several times and it happily spins up to over 4,000 revs - approaching the redline and as fast as I wanted to go - with no noises, smoke and no obvious "limp home" mode. However I didn't notice any surges from the Turbo. It is like a small petrol engine that needs revving before it will deliver any urge.

It starts reliably, no noises from the engine or smoke in normal driving.

The usual warning lights come on at the first turn of the key but no warning lights remain on once the engine has started.

Does it sound like I actually have a problem or was I expecting too much?

I think you might have been expecting it to be quicker than it is. It's only got a lowly 105bhp so no rocket ship. Might be worth investing in a remap for more poke? Otherwise just enjoy the car for how it is ;-)
