Hi folks, We have on order a L&K with kessy. Thing is we caravan and it has been reported (on caravan forum ) that owners of keyless cars are having "issues" with the cars not locking, unlocking themselves when owner thought they were secure. So --how close do you have to get to unlock the ( KESSY ) car ?

I think the answer is to ditch the caravan and stay in a hotel like normal people? Problem solved, right? :-o

A couple of feet might be pushing it!

Any 'unlocked' car would automatically re-lock after 30 seconds if the doors weren't opened anyway - that's presuming a 'careless' press of the open button on the fob occurred.

Have been driving a S2 for over 5 years. Our car has KESSY and it has never opened just because I am close to the car.

 

You need to be at a maximum distance of approximately 1.5 m from the front door handle then either yourself or someone else has to place their hand on the handle. The sensors for the unlocking or locking are located in the handle of the front door. If the door now is not opened within the next 45 seconds it will automatically lock.

 

According to the manual this is the same for the S3.

KESSY only unlocks when you touch the driver/passenger/boot handles. It does not unlock by itself.

The detection range is only a few feet. I've stood by the boot of my locked car with the KESSY fob in my pocket and my passenger was unable to unlock the passenger door until I came and stood next to her.

The only way to unlock the car without standing directly beside either the boot or front doors is by using the fob buttons.

 

I know the Renault system locks the car when you walk away from it, at about 30 feet. As most caravaners park next to the caravan they may still be too close for the locking to activate.

KESSY doesn't use this system. You need to physically touch the outside of the door handle to lock it.

You have to touch the door handle for KESSY to unlock the car and to lock it. So I guess what you are asking is it possible for you to be adjacent to the vehicle (in the caravan) and someone come along and unlock your car?

 

With that in mind I just tried mine and it works out to about 3-6 feet depending at what height and what position relative to the vehicle (rear, front etc) the KESSY is. I find the system a bit temperamental so this is only a rough estimation.

To say the least, it's certainly temperamental on my SII anyway. It decided to stop working altogether today. In terms of distance, I find about a metre max. Presume this hasn't changed on the SIII

I have KESSY on the O3, and if I stand on the driver's side of the car the person standing on the passenger's side cannot unlock. I would say the distance need to be less than 0.5m.

The only "issue" I have seen is if I unlock and lock the door within a short time frame I cannot unlock again with KESSY immediately after, but I am guessing this is "working as designed" for security reasons.

I am undecided if KESSY is on my "must have" list, but it is a very nice comfort option. I am especially fan of the Start engine button as opposed to using a key.

I can add it is certainly not possible to unlock the car when the key is inside my caravan. I tested that last summer

There are a couple of safeguards to reassure you the car is actually locked. Firstly there is the rather loud chirp from the car to tell you it's locked. One for lock, two for unlock. Also, if you set it to do so, the car will automatically fold the mirrors in once locked. The little red LED on the driver's door sill blinks like mad for a few seconds too. 

 

Also, the rear passenger doors have no sensors in the handles so you can pull on them and they won't open if locked, even with the key in your hand. There are some settings on the car that can allow certain doors to unlock only, so check the settings if planning to use this as a test. 

 

This is my first car with 'keyless everything' and I was completely used to it within a week or two. I've not had any problems with it either.
