Insurance

Keep in mind of cash back sites too. My renewal was £269 then £60 cash back from Aviva this year. That's me at 29, one windscreen claim, around 15K miles a year (social, commuting and business) on a vRS TSI.

FWIW, I've been on various car forums for some 10 years and have yet to have a competitive quote from any site sponsor insurer, even after discounts. Dire.

There are no such things as cheap insurers. It's really a case of comparing lots. It may be 'cheap' for one person but it's unlikely it will be cheap for someone else. Risk is risk. Sorry to **** on the thread but it's really worthless asking for recommendations. Your circumstances will be the factor and this will be the same from place to place. The market is saturated and this means profit margins are tiny so if you're getting high quotes, it will be pretty much the same wherever you go.

Try comparison sites, and a couple of direct underwriters like Aviva.

I know there's insurers that comparison sites don't use but comparethemarket.com or confused.com will give you a really good range of prices which you can arm yourself with when dealing with other insurers.

Aviva is the cheapest I found. As for how good they are you any know when you have an accident.

45 with clean license, no NCD (after 6 years of company car driving). Social, Domestic and Pleasure with 12K per annum

Shop around still is key, Had quote of £2600 from Skoda. One other quote of £9600, WTF.

But in the end got it for less than £700 on GoCompare. Next year will have more tim to shop around and hopefully some no claims discount to play with.

Absolute total utter utter  nightmare doing the annual merry go 'round of trying to find the best deal with matching cover.

Can suck up hours of your life

There has to be a market for an easier method somewhere somehow sometime soon hopefully, and why oh why do we have to keep listening to the same script with every single one of them, agggghhh

I think it is a learning curve. I check out about 3 compare sites each year - takes about 10 minutes. Having said that, my current insurer (E-Sure) has been sending me a lower renewal quote each year since I started using them - very unusual. Yet when I do the compare sites again they are back at the price I started with them (but still usually the cheapest)....weird or what?

All well and good going for what appears to be the best price, but then you have to start the marathon task of checking and comparing what is covered, what is not, and for how much and for what extra cost in the event of a claim.

A total minefield, guaranteed to try the patience of the most saintly of a saint.

Got this all coming up in just 6 weeks again too, aggghhh!

Possibly the most hated industry ever?

I'm currently just starting out on the war path with Adrian Flux, regarding my eldest sons insurance.

I won't go into the horrible historic  details, but I am having to sort out the monthly eye wateringly high payments as he can't get credit anymore.

They have increased my payments up a further £50 per month, and added a mysterious extra one off debit of £10 on my account too!

Rang them, but even though I pay them, they couldn't discuss it with me as I am not the policy holder.

Going to have to get my son to ring them to find out why it's gone up so much, and what this extra £10 is all about too.

They did not notify me btw, but claim they did notify him.

I continue trying to get hold of him for some explanations as the Bank of Dad is fast losing patience.

Did you have any accidents in your company car?

If not you can legitimately claim the 6 years NCD.  Just get a confirmation letter about the no claims via your fleet manager.

In 180K miles someone went up the back of me. Not much damage and I didn't claim any whip lash.

I thought about the NCD from company car but problem was it was sort of a pool vehicle and not solely driven by me so i did not bother. Plus I used to drive any vehicle available.

I'm 21 and my insurance on a vRS 2l diesel is £340. 3 years no claims. I also used the Aviva drive app which saved me 28% which is quite substantial!

You done well there.

When I was in my early twenties (some twenty years+ back now). I got quoted £1400 for a MK3 XR3i. Mind you wasn't so easy to shop around back then without having to make numerous phone calls.

Insurance is the one good thing about being up North. XR3i when I was 22 (22 years ago) and I was quoted £400 which I thought was expensive. Obviously it was fantastic compared to your quote!

Most expensive quote I've ever had was £5000 when 19 for an Escort RS Turbo....didn't buy the car

Now I'm an old fart insurance isn't an issue, £150 a year for a 186mph, sub 3 seconds to 60mph Superbike!

Churchill are one of the few insurers that will take company car years as ncd. They just need a written letter on company headed notepaper.

The cost is less annoying than their often individual and polarized viewpoints to everything.

I've 30 years combined NCB on car and bikes, but facing no bikes this year only because I hadn't really considered the implications of getting insurance on my "new" car alongside the old.

Wasn't happy with the company doing insurance originally - admiral - over one point

So went to AXA for the NEWocty, dirt cheap it was about £200 ish (sorry all).  Very impressive.

This initially caused issues as I didn't realise NCB followed on each policy ( just never been in that position)

I thought you just lost it all when you had an accident but it mirrored across them all. No, its one per car. Lesson learnt. Although it seems some choose to mirror NCB and some don't.

Faced with dilemma of rushing to sell my Fabia to get the NCB and all that nonsense, and I didn't really want to be pushed down that road, they gave me a lifeline and said they considered bike NCB so used that. But now I have nothing for bike !

I thought I'd planned to combine when my older car insurance with the original car NCB expired early this year.

Only then subsequently find AXA who I planned to take my other "new" business, don't do even slightly lower sporty springs, so my idea of combining NCB then is right out.

So I've had to reinsure my Fabia (with my original 20yr+ NCB or whatever it is) with Flux.

To be honest its not that favourable as I got almost 2x my (far better!) Octy insurance too with AXA.

So lesson is don't bother with modification is my thoughts, just gives insurance more justification to have you by short and curlies and its awkward enough already.

Might even go back to standard Fabia suspension for the end of the Fabia policy, although thats looking like about March next year now and means I don't get to ride all year round now I think.

Well my original bike insurer did seem to offer somethign for £100 extra, which on balance isn't that bad, but the annoyance of it all is just getting too much for me.

I'm grateful that I can get somewhere like Flux without the hassle in relation to mods, but that in itself is what caused me the problems in the first place.

And the biggest irony was the policy being actually written by who? Yes you guessed, AXA.

Who even had the gall to tell me that you can't "undo" a modification, its not permitted ( as I told them I'd be happy to consider perhaps putting the suspension back to standard and I'm not lying about that, I'm not stupid enough to claim to do something on policy and for it to be proven wrong in the case of an accident or something).

Proposterous ! Who do they think they are that they think I'm not allowed to have my car worked on to put standard parts on it no different to just having work on that area ?

Anyway I hardly use the bike now (although its a huge source of occassional pleasure) but it might tip the balance to just sell it as life is too short for the BS !

So its not all about £££, sometimes its the hassle and BS that varies from one provider to the next that really really gets my goat. Life is nice when its made easier. Quite often its NEVER the case with insurance.

Not sure if you knew this but some insurers will take no claims discount built up on company cars and transfer them.

Direct Line, as an example, do.

They need a letter, company headed paper, and it needs to be written to a certain format.

The vehicle(s) insured had to have been yours solely and they won't allow you to build up any further NCD/ Protect the NCD for the first year of insurance.

Getting the letter "just so" was a bit of an arse but it saved me a fair few quid a few years ago.

Edit: Should have read further back and seen people had mentioned this already. (churchill is part of the direct line group as someone else mentioned them).
