Top Gear Starts Sunday BBC2, 20.00hrs

Total crap but then I always thought the original TG was 80% crap.

So this has hit a new low by being even more pointless.

Think the people who leant the show those classic 4x4 vehicles will be cringing watching their pride and joys being mechanically abused by idiots.

For all the sneering (not on here, mostly in the comments section of the Guardian and elsewhere), some expressing a dislike of Evans or LeBlanc etc etc, I'm really looking forward to watching a beauti

  • No one.   Just leave it to Chris Harris, Sabine and Rory.   No need for doing stupid things and blowing up stuff. That's what Clarkson, Hammond and May do and you are never going to replicate the

No way will I be watching this crap ever again, the original top gear was excellent, Chris Evans is a total bell-end.

Oh my god! What utter utter cr@p and to think this was the first episode, hows the rest of it going to pan out!, the BBC should be hung ,drawn and quartered.

Jeremy clarkson was a right knob at times but bloody hell they knew how to put a programme together, this pale imitation was just that ! now im off to get the amazon prime ! Utter utter s7!t

And The Crevice hasn't even shown up on his own radio breakfast show to talk about it/brag/shout etc this morning, Sara Cox is standing in today! Savaged in the media in the UK. Perhaps he'll be on tomorrow to apologise for that utter s*!*e programme!

Wonder whats the terrible trio are saying on twitter

About as good as the old one which isnt saying much.

Extra gear was good though.

+1

They should have changed far more IMO.

Clarkson and Evan are both self opinionated tw@s..... but I happen to like them both, others can’t stand one or both of them.

I'll reserve judgement on the new Top Gear until I've seen a few more episodes, but it wasn't a great start (but then, nor was Clarkson's first re-launch of the show).

Best surprise for me was Rory Reid on Extra Gear - think he should have a shot at the main programme, he looked a natural.

Chris Harris on the other hand looked very nervous and uncomfortable, might have been a step too far for him. Even his track test on the Nomad wasn't particularly informative, with pretty much all the information he imparted available from a sales brochure.

The BBC are reporting viewing figures of 4.4 million for last nights programme, Evans said he would be disappointed if the figure wasn't 5 million. Well next week I reckon it will be about 2 million.

Total new team making and presenting it, personally I'll give it a few episodes to bed in before moaning too much.

I thought the first show was okay and watchable. You have to give it time to see how it progresses. I think with time the presenters will gel even better and it will be even more enjoyable. I would have liked to have seen more of Sabine Schmitz showing off her skills though.

If it gets slagged too much we'll end up with no motoring programming on free-2-air at all.

It'll need 2 or 3 series to find it's feet. But someone made a mistake by not being a bit more adventurous. They've opted for rehash not reboot.

I wanted it to be good but it just didn't seem to flow. The reliant run to Blackpool was pointless with 10mins of my life watching LeBlanc on the back of a recovery truck and then cramming all the other challenges once at Blackpool into the last 10minutes of the show. Just didn't seem very well edited and the 'jokes' too scripted so they weren't funny.

I'll watch next week's and see how it gets on. Just didn't excite me, make me laugh or inform me of anything other than the viper has a big wing.

Shouting Evans, was echoing round the Shed,  Matt was very monotone.

It should have been completely different.  The challenge was one of the naffest ideas executed.

Don't watch it in the Shed, next time. :D

Was a credit given to the Rt Hon John Whittingdale OBE MP for being an adviser and approving the format and editing.?

It is not dum down TV it is paying high fees to dumbass producers & presenters of what should be watchable TV on channels that the general public fund through **** Turpin TV Licencing.

It was awful. Evans was loud and irritating. Le Blanc was that wooden, Ronseal could have given him a good covering. It lacked any humour or charisma Clarkson Hammond and May have.

It was just dull and boring.

I would have liked to have seen more of Sabine Schmitz showing off her skills though.

Is that some sort of double entendre ;)

Also, I was surprised how much obvious swearing was on before the watershed.

And Matt's comment on a car and the reference to it being something along the lines of a Blackman's car, unless I totally misheard it?

Top Gear, more like Ohh dear.

Matt Leblanc was passable, Evans was awful, over excited and full of his own importance. Guest reading the auto cue!!!!!!! Lots of padding with very little substance. Trying to copy the old format is a big mistake. Clarkson, Hammond and May must be pi$$ing themselves with laughter.

Watched about 20 mins of it and turned it off.  I'll maybe try watching next series, as others have already said the first few seasons of Top gear weren't great, hopefully they'll have sorted the show out by then.

There's a few things, imho, they need to do to make a good start,

Get rid of that shrill, ginger ****, and whilst they're at it boot the drink driving American out the door as well.  How the BBC thought it was ok to have an admitted drink driver on a car show I just can't figure.

Stop trying to copy "old" top gear.  The format was getting tired and stale - recreating it with cr*ppier presenters just didn't work, the departure of Clarkson, Hammond and May gave them a perfect opportunity to "reimagine" the show.

Get some decent presenters.  Hopefully Sabine Smit and Chris Harris will get more airtime soon as they're much more genuine but they really need to be looking out on the "internets" for the next top presenters, I would vote for Rebecca Jackson amongst others.

Stop spending so much money on films, imho some of the best top gear episodes are the cheap car challenges.  £100 cars, Student/Young person cars etc as this are easy for everyone to identify with - constant banging on about £1m supercars etc whilst nice to see once in a while gets wearing as most people will never afford them.

I do worry that "The grand tour" will be ruined by Amazon virtually flinging money at it, but we'll see.  I seriously doubt it could be any worse than the first 20mins of last nights "Top Gear".

it really wasnt that bad, chris evans shouting all the time was annoying but does anyone remember the first series of new top gear before james may arrived with that fat bloke??

give it a chance.

Guardian article is a bit more measured.

A lot of the red tops are not happy at how their man got treated (especially the Murdoch press) so they're going all out to kill it.

I never read the red tops TBH. I did wonder what The Times would have to say about it (I assume Clarkson still does a column on a Sunday) but that would mean reading The Times lol

Curiously, given the rest of the online presence of The Times is behind a paywall, Clarkson's car reviews are on an un-paywalled website here:

Wasn't Clarkson done for DD a while back? And nothing wrong with ginger. You're right about the other bits though.

My views, FWIW - disappointment began with the start video, then continued with the very similar hangar studio set, Evans being a prat doing a Clarkson impression throughout, same tired story angles (Top Gun, desert pursuits, Reliant and Land Rover/Jeep "battles" and challenges) and features (Star in a car - big deal, now two of them, a bit of off-road, and no longer a reasonably priced car.), and what was all the weight of the local takeaway guys all about? Free advertising? A very weak link to the Viper film. And they could have told Ramsey to watch his language - he's known to be a swearer. And if he didn't want to, tell him to feck off. There are kids watching and it would avoid the need to explain what the bleeps were all about. (I write as someone who could guarantee a medal in a swearing contest.)

Plus points - LeBlanc knows how to play to the camera - professional. Needs to relax a bit, was still nervous in the studio. And the Blackpool Mayor was a good sport.

Er, that's about it.

They should have taken the chance to do a BIG revamp.

Can't see Evans getting those TV screen specs inside a full face helmet. Looks as daft as Heston Blumenthal. Has anyone read Evans's car reviews in the Mail on Sunday? I admit I have. He refers to every single one as "she", maybe fifty times an article. I just find it grating. And while he has the money to indulge, he often knows little about what he's actually driving.

The old lot were getting stale, the relationship between them was stilted, and Clarkson was really tiring as a boorish oaf. But they knew how to carry the show.

I'll give it a few weeks, see how the other presenters manage to make their marks, but personally I want a big improvement to keep me watching.

Now back to Wheeler Dealers.
