I've been using Briskoda for years and its always come through golden for me! But this is my first actual post so would really appreciate some help!

 

I've been driving a Skoda Fabia II 1.2 for the past 4 years, the car has been absolutely solid! The only thing I can now fault now is the dreary 1.2 engine, every other aspect of the car still suits my needs. So I've got my heart set on a VRS it seems like the obvious option, however after reading many forum threads about the oil consumption its given me cause to worry if I should actually take the plunge and buy one. Especially if I were to purchase a car that was out of warranty, I've been looking at cars with about 25k on the clock. After reading other threads on the forum I have yet to really find any information that helps me make a decision, I've only been able to find information on potential fixes to this problem (which may or may not occur).

Ideally you want one with the CTHE engine but I believe some have been plagued with issues some hassle free

 

I have the CTHE cracking cars surprisingly very quick for 1.4

Whatever you do make sure you get one from a Skoda dealership as you'll get a 12 months warranty. I have a 10 plate VRS which was a CAVE engine when I bought it now the CTHE. I purchased mine from Peterborough and drove back home which was a good 160 mile, checked the oil before I left the forecourt and checked a few days after to realize it was under 1/4 on the dipstick.

Called Skoda UK straight away to report it and they booked it in for a oil consumption test, didn't pass that so had the breather and jets done, didn't pass that either so a new engine on Skoda's behalf, didn't cost me a penny. They took into consideration it was my 3rd Skoda and I reported it straight away.

I've now done a good 15k on this engine and it hasn't used a drop of oil.

There's other things to take into consideration when buying it, be prepared to put more of the expensive fuel in and a lot more often, that lead foot happens a lot.

Also servicing, get them plugs changed every year and you should be fine.

Or even buy one at a Seat Main Dealership because sometimes they are for sale there, less often at a VW or Audi Dealership though.

They know about the Twincharger engines in the workshops even if some Sales people seem to know nothing about anything.

Educate them on the CAVE & CTHE and they can go and tell the 'Manager' what you are prepared to offer.

Get their 12 months warranty, and if not, buy a Skoda 12 month Warranty.

 

That covers the bases, and if you buy a bad one then return it quickly and they can not say 'never heard of oil use;' or 'known issues', 

they just have to suck it up.

I'll have a look around dealers and see what pops up. Would everyone recommend to go for the CTHE? Am right in saying the CTHE was the new generation of engine that came in late 2012? 

Yes the CTHE came in late 2012, but some still had issues.

 

Do not be put off if a car has had a replacement engine fitted.

A recently fitted engine in a CAVE might have the latest Oil Spray Jets, and the latest Software and could be a bargain.

Just buy a Warranty. Maybe if the Engine was paid for by a Warranty Provider it got 2 years warranty anyway so some remaining.

 

Check with Skoda UK Customer Services or at a VW Group Main Dealer what shows on the system for Service History, Warranty History, 

a new engine fitted or anything else.

 

If a car had Oil Consumption Tests under Warranty and no record or receipts for further work, walk away.

 

There are less than 2,900 Mk2 vRS in the UK, and quite a few disappearing in growing numbers.

1,800 CAVE and 1,100 CTHE, and less than 700 are estates of both CAVE & CTHE.

Dm Keith should have a mint 2014 CTHE metallic grey estate in stock with no oil burning issues.

Look into its history. Not all of them have issues.

If I had properly researched I wouldn't have bought my vRS. Should have got a golf GTI or Octavia vRS. Mines at the Skoda garage today being investigated

I had an oil warning light in less than 1000 miles from taking delivery

As said, dont let it put you off just do a bit of research. I've got one of the first 2010 VRS' and ive had no Oil issues, the car's been faultless.

It must have sold or been traded out. It was only part ex'ed in 2 weeks ago.

It's a shame really as it was immaculate, previously owned by a SKODA owners club member and would've been a great buy.

Was that P.K. O'Connor's car? Shame if it was - like James says it would have been a great buy.

Edit: Sorry - wouldn't have been as his was a hatch.

Gutted. Was a 14 plate. Because there is a mint 13 plate one at a mini dealer in middlesbro that I've been looking at.

It was a 64 plate, literally one of the last ones. The owner was called Mr Mcdouglas.

I have had my 2010 CAVE engined vRS for over 6 months. I am 21, and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the insurance quotes -very cheap! Tax is also cheap as you will know.

 

In terms of oil, mine has used a lot in the first 6 months, about 3 litres over 8,000 miles to be precise. I got it at 17,000 miles with full service history, not from a main dealer. Chap had 2 other skoda's though, and it has been faultless. I drove it back down from Newcastle after it had been sat stationary for months -went like a dream. 

 

I would thoroughly recommend a vRS, of any engine spec. To be honest I think that some people can be overly cautious, but as people have said above things can go wrong. It is best to do your research on the car, and if it's from a private seller, try to understand how he has looked after the car.

 

In terms of driving they are absolutely brilliant, reliable, fun and joyous to name but a few adjectives.

 

My oil issue has now started to clear up from what I can see, since I have been driving it more regularly and topping it up with the good stuff. They are naturally thirsty cars, after all they are twin charged, but you get your money back through insurance and tax! Factor it in as a yearly/monthly cost of the car and you will be fine. Don't forget to use high octane petrol -none of the cheap stuff!

Well I got one. Fetch it Thursday. Metallic grey estate. 2013 CTHE lump. 15k miles. Previous owner took out a 5 year extended warrantee when they purchased it new so still got 2 years and 85k miles of that left. Been service every year at the same skoda dealer.

Park sensors, red interior, climate. Appreciate ALL your advice guys and will be on here regularly and the octy section now. Little and large on the drive as of Thursday. First thing I'll do is check the plugs and poss get some densos in then going to get some H&R springs for it like my Octavia.

As to fuel, that depends on how you decide to drive them.

 

Feed it with good fuel and give it a good roasting regularly and it will run just great.

I should have been more clear -thirstier than a non turbo'd car with the sameish engine size. Naturally thirsty might have been a bit excessive  :notme:

Are you talking oil?

The faulty bad build engines use excessive oil, nothing to do with small capacity & Twincharge.

Components and software failings of VW. Quality Control, and chosen consumables also have caused failings.

Really just some of the 160 ps / 170 ps /180 ps Euro 5 emission Twinchargers.

2009-2012, and still 2012 on.

 

Amazingly the Factory 1.4 TSI 150ps Twinchargers does not have the same failings, even when remapped with more power..
