Multifunction steering wheel retro fit MSFS Mk3

Recommended Posts

Hi guys this is my first proper post. I'm picking up our new 2013 Octavia 1.2 SE Petrol on Tuesday. My old car kept breaking down and the RAC provided a brand new Octavia with all the kit on it, we feel in love and then found one in our budget.

So the big question I have is, how easy is it to add a multifunction steering wheel? Every car I looked at was missing this for some reason. This is my first Skoda and I've previously had a few French cars that typically have always had this as standard, along with terrible reliability and constant electrical issues lol.

I've seen multiple people selling them but guess there must be some pain involved, in terms of additional modules and/or recoding the car to see it?

I've had an hour or two searching through the forum but count find any specific answers, though I accept I might be using the wrong terminology. Though the rear camera retro fit install I found was amazing!

Also on a slight side note, is it easy to replace the interior trim bars on doors and around the fans etc...On a previous BMW you could get these in a pack but I've struggled to see if they're readily available.

Cannot wait to get the car and think this will be the first of many. Thank you in advance, Matt.

Hi and welcome to the 1.2 TSi club.

well pleased with mine, its nippy but easily returns late 40's mpg, or even over 50mpg if you're really careful.

Retro fits aren't as easy as they were in the past. VW have added a lot of coding and component protection on this generation of cars. However I expect somone knows how to do it. Superskoda also sell the buttons and steering wheels.

You might also find some guides on a Golf Mk7 website, as electronically these cars are very similar.

The trims bars aren't easily removeable, the are welded on, but maybe consider wrapping them in film if you want to change them.

Thanks for the advice.

I'n all truth I'm not massively bothered about the trim but would love to get the MFSW added.

I'll use your recommendation and look at how to do it using the Golf as a base.

Thanks again, Matt.

You can change the steering wheel to a MFSW or you might just mount the switchpanels and interconnecting cable instead of the blanking panels on your steering wheel. Either way you will also need a new airbag cable with extra wires for the MFSW connections.

10 min job, and very little coding needed.

You would need to check your gateway, Only MQB high gateways are suitable for MFSW

also your car must have a maxidot (i think the SE has that)

Yes, I have the Maxidot...is there a way of checking if my gateway is suitable?

Hi Eddie, pardon my ignorance. VCDS, this is the computer interface for all VW derived auto's right?

Basically yes. It's not the official VW Group one, which of course is only found in dealerships, but is what most (all?) independent VW Group specialists use, and many 'hobbyists' like those on this forum. There's a list here of the people who have one, who will generally lend it out for a few beers!

Hi guys, I stopped chasing the dream of a MFSW over Xmas. Today I decided to give a few dealers a call and they tell me it can't be done. Apparently, I'm missing the wiring loom to allow this. I gave my chassis number to one of them and was told I could have cruise control but that was it. Are they accurate, no one seemed to be very sure of themselves. I was just hoping to drop it into a local dealer and then collect it a few hours later, but that looks like an impossible hope.

Pretty sure it can be done...

There is even a kit for it here: http://www.cars-equipment.com/www/en/shop/multifunction-switches-buttons-6/oem-multifuntion-switches-retrofit-upgrade-for

I'm not too familiar with the MK3 but I believe that if the gateway is replaced you'll need a dealer to fit/code it due to component protection. Not sure if this is only for second hand parts or also applies to new ones.

I have a 2015 registered MK3 1.4 TSI SE DSG 110kw A7F that’s with the 7 speed DSG (DQ200) Gear Box.

It didn’t have DSG paddle shift (flapy paddles) and it had a nick in the leather so I swapped it two weeks ago for an (OEM 3V0419091S CWE MFSW) Steering Wheel from:
It cost about £150 + shipping.

I didn't disconnect battery because I don’t know the infotainment security code (I Must Get That). If the key is in ignition but with only the wheel lock undone (fist turn) and left for 10 minutes and you don’t turn on until after the Air Bag is re fitted it should be reasonably safe; well it was for me. But at your own risk.

I used an M12 spline but I believe I should actually have use an M12xzd, however it worked. Re torqued to 30nm with no problems. It works a treat.

@GregSKO Can I just confirm that you have installed a OEM flappy paddle MFSW to your car and that it now works ?

Was it a straight forward replacement as I was looking into the viability of getting multi functions added and saw a (buttons only) kit or a replacement wheel at not too dissimilar prices and trying to work out the best but if I can get flappy paddle into the mix even better ?

Lastly was there anything else needing doing (recoding etc) or just the swap itself ?

bb

I am sorry but I think the answer is both yes and no. Yes I swapped my steering wheel for one with flappy paddles but my original one was already MFSW. All it was missing was the flappy paddles and so I didn’t need to change any of the settings with VCDS. There are other threads about that cover the options for adding MFSW functionality. As far as I can see as long as you have a DSG gearbox and the correct wiring loom either a button kit or a suitable MFSW (with or without flappy paddles) are possible. However you would need to re-code to enable the MF functionality.

Thanks for the input, that kind of makes more sense.
