Heated Windscreen

Featured Replies

Hi I am new to this forum. Could someone tell me how long it takes their heated windscreen to defrost the screen please? Mine seems to take quite a few minutes before it clears. Is this normal? Thanks

It depends how cold it is.

A few minutes when the screen is really frozen Sounds right.

It's all normal.

On a really frosty day I start the motor switch on the front and rear screen heaters and the door mirrors, by the time I have scrapped all of the frost and ice off of the side windows the front and rear screens are just about de frosted.

This, so I'd say 2-3 mins. It's rare I ever get in and have to wait for the heated screen to finish it's job.

Guys, thank you for your replies. I will wait for our next frost ( if we get any more)! and check the again.

Are you sure you have a heated screen?

The button on the climate control which looks like a heated screen button is just a button that directs all airflow to the screen and turns the fan speed and temp up.

It's not the same as for example Fords where the screen is heated with fine electrical elements, which work a lot faster.

Not on mine it isn't. I have the heated elements in my windscreen. Guessing OP does too.

Pretty sure it's an option on all models though, that's why I'm asking.

Its the Winter Pack and there is a button with a little M on a windscreen for it.

I don't have a heated windscreen but  I'd expect it to start de-icing pretty fast if I paid the extra. I've seen a Ford Mondeo one in action and it took only a few seconds to start working.

A few minutes is what I hope from my new petrol Octavia without a heated screen.

Did test it in -12°C.

Took 3 minutes to deice the windscreen.

That doesn't sound bad at -12. We rarely get that cold in the UK.

I had a heated screen in a Mondeo about 12 years ago and that took a similar amount of time to de ice the screen as the Octavia does.

-4c it took mine 2 mins, 0c it took 1 min.

As above really, it depends how frozen it is! I have a Ford Ranger with heated screen and they both take similar times to defrost, 2-3 minutes is the longest it's ever taken and we've had -7 recently.

The advantage of the screen heater isn't just the time it takes to defrost, it's also the manner in which it defrosts. It does it without any physical 'input' from the owner. Personally I'd rather wait an extra couple of minutes than scrape away at the windscreen with an old credit card, risking scratches by moving grit and who knows what else is trapped under the frost.

That's why I chose it. I don't mind scraping the screen on the few days a year it's necessary but I hate the scratches.

It also helps to keep the screen's interior demisted so you don't need to direct airflow across he screen/away from keeping your hands warm.

How long does it take to deice if you take a leak on the windscreen?

I do definitely have a heated screen, it has the elements in the glass. I will keep an eye on it. It seemed a little slow, last frost. Thanks for your input guys!

Do you get frost way down south?

As above, depends on the amount of ice/frost on the screen.

Your southern softie frost should clear in a minute.

Our northern frost takes a couple of minutes to soften and wipe off :-)

Thank you for your Celtic input, I take the note about the soft southern frost...I will keep you updated!

Had the heated front screen on my Mondeo but sadly not on the Octavia but one thing to be aware of in the British climate is that in normal winter conditions with temperatures usually just above freezing that it is fairly common to have a lot of condensation on the insides of the windscreen. In that situation if you are relying on a heated element clearing away all that moisture, it will take rather a long time, hence reason why I have a small chamois leather pad which I can use to dry the insides of the screen off and also to clear any moisture from the outside of the front two windows as they never clear enough to see out of them with simply opening and closing the windows, which always cleared the Mondeo windows.

I watched my good lady depart this morning with a light frost on the car.

Precisely 1 minute to thaw the frost so that the wipers could clear front and rear windows. De-icer spray and scraper not needed.

[and now I give up after failing miserably to get 2 pics attached from photo bucket after they previewed ok then ended up with just a text strink - something silly going on here]
